Hey @iacas, what do you think Tiger is trying to feel when he does those really loose practice swings? Going past parallel at the top and (asfaict) almost relaxing his grip at the top?

Can’t say I’ve paid much attention.

The Barbasol's delayed-to-Monday finish is the prime reason we have yet to see the latest release of the Official World Golf Rankings. Is Tiger's Top 50 ranking (albeit by the thinnest of hairs) really a sure thing?

I think the high hands rehearsals are a reminder.  This is a swing.

There was no reason for him to ever tuck the right elbow or change styles trying to copy Mahan.

Was there anyone at Barbasol who could overtake him?  I figure anyone with a chance of reaching top-50 this past week would have been at the British Open.

Furthermore, this weekend moved Tiger from #31 to #20 in USA Ryder Cup points.

If he finishes in the top 20, he's gotta be a lock for captain's pick, I assume.   but, there is a lot of golf left.  He could climb into the top 8 on his own possibly.

Nothing in Life is Certain -- So there's that occasional case of butterflies in the stomach. As stated above, Tiger did make the Top 50 -- but by less than a cat's whisker!

And just for some perspective, if it wasn't for the artificial averaging of 40 events, when he has only played 16 in the timeframe, he is nearly in the top 10.  His 'true' average points are 5.94, which would put him just behind Tommy Fleetwood, who is in 11th place.  A ranking that is more reflective of how he has been playing.

I'm not saying the OWGR use of the minimum denominator of 40 is unfair or anything.  I have no problem with him having to work his way up to become eligible for some events.

I'm just pointing out that he has been playing at the level of a top 15 golfer rather than a 50th ranked player.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

^ Good point!

Also, for everyone wondering if he can win again (very few now) let’s not forget that he won five (5) times in 2013. Only 5 years ago, and that was his last ‘normal’ schedule year.

2018 has been a pretty good year so far, despite no wins. From his lowest OWGR-rank ever to 50th, where he hasn't been since early 2015.

His strengths has been approach to the green, around the green and tee-to-green. Putting has improved, but off-the-tee could see some improvement.

Nothing wrong with your math, but that comparison is biased in Tiger's favor, because Tommy Fleetwood has a whole bunch of events that have been depreciated down to less than half their original value, while Tiger has just a few.  It would be more fair to start counting for both of them at the last Hero Challenge, Tiger's first event of his comeback.  Doing that, I get Tiger with 7.84 to Tommy's 11.05.

Actually, I don't think the Hero should get WGR points, because the field is so small.  Heck, if I got a sponsor's exemption into it, I would come away with about 2.4 points, which is about what you get for finishing 20th at the Greenbrier.  I would not finish 20th at the Greenbrier.

If you just look at 2018 events, Tiger's averaging about 7.7 points per event (undepreciated), which is better than Spieth (who's having an off year), but would only get him to about 25th if he played at that level for two years, and had most of his events depreciated.   I agree with you that he seems to be playing better than that, especially after watching the Open, but I'm not sure he's top ten yet.

Barring injuries, the way he's trending makes it just a matter of months, though.

Obviously nothing can stop him going for a run in marine boots or something along those lines, or just picking up a niggle, but especially the way he came out of that bunker at 10 makes me think the (back) injury days are hopefully behind us. With Rory seeming half-interested, Spieth and a few more showing signs of waking up and a lot of good 'up-and-comers' from both sides of the pond, I'm as excited for the rest of 2018 as I've been for any golf season in quite a while!

Not only that, they both have 5 letter second names, play golf right-handed, competed at multiple Ryder Cups... can't believe I've never noticed this before 🤯

And each of their surnames has 3 unrepeated consonants and a pair of the same vowel.
