One hole.   more specifically, 1 bad flop shot killed him.  It was there, though.

I disagree with the announcers, though.   I think the flop was the right call.   on a major hunt, you've gotta make plays.  club just slid under the ball.   I bet if you give him that same shot 10 times, he makes Par 7 times, bogey 2 times, and double once.

"too much risk during a shot under the highest pressure."

isn't this what Tiger Woods does, though?   he was in shot maker mode at that point in the tournament.

I mean, it's a little flop shot.  We've seen Tiger execute that shot under pressure countless times.   The moment I see Tiger chip that ball left and settle for a probably bogey, is the moment I know the old Tiger is dead and buried.

So a win at next tourney could vault him up to 20 in OWGR. Currently @ 50th. I wonder how well he has to place to not fall in the rankings. Not looking at it from a negative point of view, but how far he's come. He has to place well to maintain now, which is a good thing. 656 was end of 2017. βœŠ

The OWGR website hasn't published the strength of field yet, and in any case the numbers aren't set until play starts on Thursday.  But making the safe assumption that it will be as strong as usual, it would take something worse than about 42nd for Tiger to lose ground.

Since it's a no-cut event, he has four chances to play a good round, and he would have to be really, really off form for that to happen.  Still, there are reasons why it could:

- he was contending in the Open right up to the last couple of holes.  That was the first time in years, so he probably took the week off and didn't practice much to de-stress.

- he has played Firestone so many times that he thinks he knows every blade of grass, and there's no pro-am, so he will probably show up late and not practice there much

- he has the PGA coming up next week, so he's going to try to conserve physical and mental energy, and may even practice shots he'll need for the PGA rather than the optimal shot for his situation

Not trying to make excuses in advance, just seeing the glass half empty.

He's also so far below the 40-tournament minimum that picking up OWGR points at all should improve his ranking, right?

That’s likely to be true but some of his tournaments will be dropping points as the multiplier decreases. Tournaments older than 13 weeks start to lose value linearly over 91 weeks till they hit zero and drop out. He doesn’t have a lot of tournaments in that situation right now but there are some so the first point or so he gets will offset that. Everything above that improves his ranking. For a wgc I would be surprised if he lost points on average. He’d have to do pretty badly.

I'm talking about this one:

http://www.sportingnews.com/us/golf/news/tiger-woods-ranking-comeback-quicken-loans-national-open-championship/1a4tc1svaxv5c1lm1g8a7umk9i

https://www.cbssports.com/golf/news/why-does-tiger-woods-keep-going-on-vacation-after-majors/

The first link is about not touching a club for ten days after this year's Masters, the other two are about him taking at least a week off after the US and British Opens in 2015, so it's not like the Masters was an anomaly.

If he's way back on the leaderboard without a chance at winning, maybe. If he's got a chance, I don't think so. Are there any special shots he will need at the PGA that he wouldn't ordinarily play at Firestone? He is playing in Akron to win, not for practice.

    • I watched it and for the most part it was enjoyable. I did not enjoy a lot of the non-golfer background talk. Some of the hole designs were "wonky"; the par 5 with the three separate fairways - it was obvious tour level players were going to hit for the middle fairway - so no strategy in that design. I would prefer more realistic hole designs with a lot of strategic intent built in. You could see the players over at the computer screen planning out their shots - but not once were we able to hear what they were saying - that is what I would have liked to hear. Maybe in the future they could solicit hole designs from the top golf architects in the industry.  Having the graphic showing the ideal putting line would be nice. I agree with Iacas - having as much data as possible would be nice. Maybe they could have that available on a web site with real time updates and allowing you to replay the shot. So much more they could do! Hopefully as it takes off they will be able to add this. I would also like to see a LIV team - captained by Bryson. An LPGA team - captained by Nelly.
