Game golf does not use course or slope ratings to calculate handicaps. So, I have to "assume" they do what they say on the site by using distance. If the average higher handicap takes 50 yards more to get into a hole, I think they use that number for the hole rating. If this is the case then higher handicaps will always be effectively playing a longer course than their lower handicap counterparts. For instance, my Game Golf handicap is 1 stroke different than my actual handicap, and I mishit my share of balls. I noticed that lower handicaps are pretty close to their actual handicaps. I spot checked quite a few of them. It seems like as you go lower in handicap, the CR starts to come in line with the played hole length due to the lower handicap's better skill.

Once again, another handicap tracking method that punishes the higher handicaps with unusually low handicaps. If people are complaining that the GHIN favors lower handicaps by the 0.96 factor, this should really take the cake. :-P

But the site doesn't say it uses yardage in the calculation just that it's an estimate based on typical yardage. My guess is the main factor is score relative to par. Because they don't use ratings it probably shakes out that those playing tees rated under par have a GG handicap slightly lower than their official handicap and those playing tees rated over par slightly higher. My GG handicap is very close to the difference in CR and par on the course I play most. My GG handicap is 5.4. The course I play most, and it's almost always these days, is 69.5 par 71. The 1.5 rating to par difference is almost exactly the difference from my GG handicap to my official.

The GAME GOLF Handicap is an estimate of the number of strokes you will achieve, over (or under) par, in an 18-hole round of golf. In other words, it is an estimate of your scoring ability on a golf course of a typical difficulty and yardage.

FWIW the sum of the shots taken is often less for me. Depends on the day but if tees are up and pin is front of green and I hit it mostly straight and never pass the center of the green it will be less than card yardage.

This is what they actually do:

We have a vast data set for users who have played a large number of rounds and can be identified as scratch players (average normalized score of 70-75).  So we are using this as a benchmark baseline to estimate a player's handicap.
From Game Golf scratch players (which act as the benchmark group), we first discover how these players score (average number of strokes) on holes of a certain yardage* (yardage is from first tee shot to the pin location).  Then we aggregate all the scores from the holes played from all of these players and bucket them into 5-meter intervals using holes 60 meters and up to 600 meters.  Meters are converted into yards when needed.
To calculate a handicap, we then apply the same principles to a player of interest and getting their average number of strokes played for each of those hole distance buckets.  We then collect the difference between that player and GAME GOLF's Scratch players, and then find the collective average.

Still heavily based on score. They are comparing the strokes we take to a scratch golfer for holes of similar distance. The yardage bucket is based on the scratch player data not the tally of how far you traveled from the tee to green. It's just a generic rating. Kind of like hole handicaps.

Decent solo round after playing 9 holes with a foursome. I didn't track that round, but was pushing everything. I feel like I got that under control a bit the second time around.

Not as many GIR's, but I felt as though I had a small amount of control with every club. Used the driver on the par 5's for the first time in a while. Can't seem to get much distance even with on-center hits.

http://www.gamegolf.com/player/jeremie/round/912027 **game golf only shows it was 6 mph wind but that is way way off, there were gusts of wind probably around 20+ while we were playing, last 2 holes or so the wind finally died down**

Was pretty crazy weather. A lot of wind, strangely enough most of the time it was into our face. Good example is hole 15, was a smashed driver that only went 232 yards... Then a perfectly struck 3 hybrid that only went 198 yards. There were several iron/wedge shots that looked like they literally stopped moving forward and started coming backwards as they were coming down. I did struggle with mid range wedge shots which is normal for me, but overall I was pretty happy with my ball striking. 17 over in weather like this felt like it would have been around a 13 or 14 over without the wind, maybe even better. Putting was really good with only 32 putts total.

Played last Friday with @nevets88. Conditions were perfect. Not too hot, not too cold. Greens were rolling at a good pace. Lost 4 balls on the back 9 that totally blew up my score.

Game Golf had to take my 18-hole round and split it into two separate 9s because Hyatt Hills cuts two holes into every green so you play to two separate pins each playthrough. GG's software doesn't support that so I asked support to split it into separate 9-hole rounds.

8 over on an executive 18.  10 pars, 8 bogeys... putted well.  I've changed my setup when putting to have my eyes right over the ball, (I thought they were before but they were not, feel is not real).  This change resulted me gripping my putter partially on the metal so I shortened it to 33" and put a Super Stroke mid slim on it.  So far, so good with this change.

73 at Downing Golf Course. Hey, I parred 18, which is about a 490-yard par four. I don't know if I can remember the last time I've hit an iron into the green (the PING G 3 Crossover doesn't count as an iron).

There is pretty narrow gap off the tee that you can hit to drive over the lake instead of taking it around the normal dogleg.

Striking the ball OK. I struggle on trying to hit a punch shot out of rough. I duffed three of them. Putting was a tad better. Short game is still Russian roulette. I just struggle with getting enough club speed on short game shots.

If I didn't have the punch and short game shot fiasco then I would have been around 2-3 over.

I just need to be more focused and solid in my shots. I'm not confident at all with anything not a long game shot.

I don't know how I pulled a 94 out of my ass with the way I was playing. It really doesn't make sense.

My irons were off and my putting from within 3 ft was just horrible. But I kept my driver and woods between the ropes and my short game saved bogey or par more than once.

Hole 13 (par 5) says it all. An ok drive that left me with a good look at the green. I have a LSW moment and pull the 5w to get closer to an open green (instead of playing safe with an iron) and hit a laser right at the flag that stops on the fringe. This is the closest opportunity I've ever had at eagle with a very good chance for birdie, and.....

....4-putt for bogey. Yeah!!!

One of my goals this year was to break 100 on this course which is just under 6,000 yards.

    • Cool here's my tweak, "If a player’s ball lies in the general area and there is interference from exposed tree roots or exposed rocks that are in the fairway or 1 club length from the fairway the tree roots and exposed rocks are treated as ground under repair. The player may take free relief under Rule 16.1b.[But relief is not allowed if the tree roots only interfere with the player’s stance.]
    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
    • I agree with @klineka, you're clearly doing something right.  Its always going to be a bit of a guessing game if you don't have any scoring history.  On the other hand, understanding that it takes only 54 holes to establish an actual handicap, and they have about 6 weeks in which to play and post enough scores, I don't think its at all unreasonable to require them to have an official handicap before they become eligible for prizes.  I don't know how you structure the fees for the series of competitions, but if its possible they'll play with the group without being eligible for prizes, you could consider a way to let them do that without contributing to the prize pool.
