It's a brave move by Tiger if the sources are accurate. If he doesn't play well, the galleries are bound to turn ugly on him in no time.

You never know at that place but I would think the crowd would be appreciative enough that he's there that they would treat him well regardless.

Hope he decides to play. It's a fun event that doesn't take itself too seriously....the kind the tour needs more of.

The guy with the gun.  That may well be perfectly legal in AZ.  Even may be legal to carry a loaded revolver on your hip for all to see, in AZ and other states.  I doubt the golf management could restrict such state law. Makes no difference if public or private place, the right to carry weapons is paramount, in the eyes of many persons, including lawmakers. What if someone threatened you with a 9i, wouldn't you feel better if you had a .44 magnum on your hip?

I'm not sure if you're comment is serious but I'll reply anyway. The PGA Tour certainly can (and does) prohibit guns at their events. http://www.pgatour.com/company/tournaments-prohibited-items.html Regarding your last statement, since when do players go around threatening to strike fans with their 9-iron? Hilarious.

I think his full swing looked pretty good, actually. Some of his driver swings were butter.

You can't call him butter until he gets on a roll.

Thanks to Stuart Scott for that.

I wonder if right next to it, there's a sign that says this:

For fan safety, we will not be serving alcoholic beverages at the 2015 Waste Management Open.

I wonder if they're willing to offer exceptions to this rule for some players. A few years ago, I think it was Bubba Watson who threw a half dozen Ping visors into the stands.

First off, it's ridiculous that the players can't throw things to the fans.  That's one of the cool traditions on the PGA Tour.  I wonder if they can just hand the fans stuff, lol?!?  Ridiculous nonetheless.

As for Tiger playing the event, it's great for the PGA Tour.  This event is always one of my favorite regular Tour stops, and Tiger's addition makes it one the most anticipated of the season.  The first few events of 2015 will be solid, but this one will go to the next level.  And don't forget about Spieth committing either.  That's a huge get for the event as well, and he'll join Fowler, Watson, Mickelson, etc. to make this one really full of hype.

I hope Tiger has a good 2015 season because it's good for golf when he's in the hunt.  I'm not sure he'll win any majors this year, but I'll be surprised if he doesn't win a couple events.  If he's in the hunt in Phoenix, the crowd is going to be even crazier than it usually is!

I don't know ... this just doesn't bother me.  It's not going to affect the rowdiness and excitement of the place - after all, there is only one 50-60' long stretch where they throw their hats up into the crowd anyways.

I can just about guarantee that if I went and I happened to find that my tickets were in the area where they throw the stuff, that I'd be grateful not to have frat boys spilling their beers and falling on top of me while diving for a $20 Puma hat.

Sigh. First the caddy races and now this?

Exactly ... how much LESS interesting was the tournament because they eliminated the stupid caddy races?  I'm gonna say for most people probably something 0.0000000000001% less.

I'm sure I'm sounding like an old fuddy-duddy here but that couldn't be further from the truth.  Everything about the Pheonix tournament and the 16th hole in particular is great.  I've love the rowdiness, I love the cheers and the boos, I love the Fenway park like setup, the scoreboards, and the guys having fun with it like Mr. Gangnam style from a couple of years ago, but the caddy races (meh) and the throwing of hats (whoopty-do) don't interest me.

They were smart to eliminate the caddy races before one of those guys hurt themselves, and they're smart to eliminate the throwing of stuff into the seats before some dipshit lunges and falls over the railing and into a cactus or onto a rock.

Think about the repercussions of the 16th hole atmosphere if they waited until after something like that happened to curb this stuff?

For me, it's not about the caddy races or the throwing, but rather the continued need to try to legislate the fun out everything these days.....

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
