1. Well he has a really poor takeaway that looks eerily similar to mine with the hands moving out over the ball early and swinging the club inside. I would get him starting his hands going straight back parallel to his foot line and less wrist.

2. Fix his posture. He has that S in his spine and stands a bit too close to the ball, hence the goat humping move.

Yeah this is pretty much a more extreme version of me when I started getting back into golf.

Edit: Though my head moved a lot more and I humped the goat a lot less.

Too much arms/hands lifting before the shoulders start turning on the backswing. Leads to the rolling of the forearms he's got going on. Hands don't get deep enough. Early extension. Head is moving way back and up on the down swing. Can't really tell but I doubt he's getting his weight forward on the DS

I'll play!

Takeaway/backswing first because everything else follows it.

Maybe guide the club with one hand and his hands with your other hand so he can get the feel for it?

Damn! This is hard. That's why you guys are pros and I'm sure not. I don't add a lot of value here.

Oh wait! First thing. Buy him some black shoes (or a white belt). Just because you can't swing like a pro yet doesn't mean you shouldn't dress like one :-)

Why?  Because it appears to be obvious to my un-trained eyes, also because that is about as far as my knowledge goes.

How?  I would say he needs to get that s-curve out of his lower back.  Easiest to fix using a mirror.

I am not much of a judge of other's swings, but off hand I say his hips are finishing to far left, unless his actual target is over there some where. If not, maybe some work on his address position, and/or swing path to get rid of the pull. Perhaps a little too much outside in swing path with club face square to that path.

Perhaps more of a one piece take away, which would lead to a better sequence on the down swing, and a better transfer of weight.

I'd like to see what his hands, and club head position are at the top of his swing. His grip might be loose at the top. Also, what his grip looks like at address. It, might be too strong, when compared to his club face.

Just guessing here on my part. :loco:

Being a 10.1 he is already a pretty decent golfer.

This guy hits thin pulls.   Definitely

He's a 10.1   I would have doubts

  1. What do you work on?  He will need multiple corrections to improve. Start with posture correction (at address and top of swing), Stance needs to flare feet open a tad, especially left foot position,  then takeaway needs to one piece(arms and hands current, late should turn) Weight transfer moves to heels at top of swing (right arm lifts open from body, body straightens at impact, hands are too active through impact. Weight transfer is improper.
  2. Why? Without corrections, the habits developed will be difficult to change. With this swing, tee ball, iron shots will all be weak and towards the left of targets.
  3. How? Talk with a teaching pro and work on corrections in a progressive manner, practice fundamental taught, set a goal to improve. They are several methods to enhance improvement. Work on correcting swing positions and swing path for starters. Swing threads at the sand trap offer great discussion and analysis for individuals.

So how to fix this?

1. Takeaway is number 1, but this is only part of the problem.

2. His arms are too far in front on the takeaway. This causes the rest of his backswing to be too flat. Then to get back he makes an OTT move and comes down steep, outside in, and his right arm gets trapped behind him, causing him to pop out of his stance before striking the ball.

3. Since the takeaway alone isn't going to fix this, because I had a takeaway problem myself that I did fix yet retained the OTT move with the right arm trapped, I'd start him swinging a short club with his right arm only, focusing on getting it to the correct A3, then to A4. Then once he has that feel, start swinging all the way up to A4 with the right arm and down through the bottom of the swing arc. He'll have to use his body differently to do this. The pressure will need to be felt on his index finger. It'll be more of a throwing motion with his right arm. During this drill he must maintain correct posture. Then once he has this down hit some one armed shots.

When he has this part of the drill down, add the left arm with the instructions to keep the left arm supple during the takeaway.

He should then take the club back closer to his body and be more on plane in his transition and downswing. This could correct fix his problem with the elbow getting trapped behind him.

Posture - Less knee bend, lower back less arched. Key #1 - Can't tell from these views, but my guess is that he's pulling his head away from the target on the backswing, then extending early on the downswing. Could probably use some more right side extension in the backswing. Key #2 - His weight definitely isn't forward. Key #3 - I think fixing the first two should help with this one, and his thinning problem. (Assuming he needs help, since we can't see face-on.) Key #4 - He's hitting straight pulls, so path and face are both left. Path can be alleviated some by fixing the first two keys, some by getting him to stop picking the club straight up (which might also be helped a little by more right side extension). Key #5 - I dunno. Maybe if he does all the other stuff, this will correct itself somewhat? I'm not good at Key #5. :-) I have him start with the posture. Simple, pre-swing, static change that he should be able to make without much effort. Then I try to get him to extend his right side more on the backswing. Then weight forward and the goat humping stuff. Then plane work if needed.

This guy hits thin pulls. He's a 10.1.

What do you work on?

Why?

How?

First a few posture issues. I would get him in a more relaxed position. More slouch in the upper shoulders. He just looks really constricted in trying to keep that back perfectly straight that it is dictating the rest of his swing.

Even with the backswing he doesn't get in a too bad of a position at the top, he reroutes into a decent position during transition. The clubhead looks to be in a good position in the downswing.

What is killing him is his lack of weight forward.

I would get him to keep more knee flex in the front leg. Do a lot of those preset drills getting him use to weight forward and getting that proper extension through impact. He's got a bad case of no weight forward, lets flip to save the shot.

My first thing I see that is causing the pulls is he is rolling his wrist through impact(flipping), this would also cause his thin hits because he isn't maintaining the flying wedge? The other things the takeaway look bad but he gets to a ok position on the downswing.

I'll give it a shot:

Takeaway seems fine, though a little unorthodox, but it looks like he is getting himself into a good position at the top of his back swing.  Looks like he isnt getting his weight onto his front side at impact (weight seems to be on his back foot and his heels) causing him to come over the top, hence the pulls.  Also, its hard to tell by the angle, but this might be causing him to flip a little as well causing the thin shots.

I would get him to try to feel like he is starting his downswing by thrusting his left hip toward target and up to get his weight on his front leg, seeing how he reacts to that, and going from there.  This should help him get his swing moving a little more in to out.

He should try an open stance. Some things are hit and learn. Like closing your stance (moving the ball forward) with a wedge in your hand. He might have been hitting driver so much he is in a habit. Thats a short club he has and it closes fast because the shaft is several inces shorter than driver and thus the head travels a physically shorter distance. Think of his ball flight as the target line because he doesnt have a target on that range like a more seasoned player might have and you can see what I am saying about his setup.

Ill give it a go 1 Arms too far out during takeaway , instinct is to turn instead of slide to impact.. He need to preset A2 proper flying wedge right elbow in and turn. gloves on both armpits 2 And too much right wrist bent. he had to flip and lift or the ball fight is too low. As a result he had to stand up or he will hit it fat . if he didnt release on time he will thin pull. and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cyWGHfudzs In short work on flying wedge and hip slide waist to waist punch shots will be my top priority for this person. Then I would work on Syncing the body by using both arm straight throughout the swing so body and hip would sync. My case is, Its very difficult to change a source of power , and it have to be done in very small steps.

3 more hip tuck and round back, which he will be forced to straighten knees at setup, it will reduce turning too horizontally also a cause for round housing. easier to slide your hips, bring arms onplane.

Hard to tell. Backswing looks odd but doesn't seem too bad at the top (however he got there). Posture a bit head-up-and-arse-out - needs to relax a bit and be a bit more rounded. Most important thing - weight transfer/hip slide/whatever on downswing. He needs to stay down on it as well - seems to be pulling up and out through impact. Suspect that last would go if he was more weight forward through impact.

How? Not sure what the best drills are. Half 7-irons with weight exaggeratedly forward? Make sure downswing initiated via hip slide and/or kicking right knee inwards (although be careful as can easily cause right shoulder to drop).

    • Nah, man. People have been testing clubs like this for decades at this point. Even 35 years. @M2R, are you AskGolfNut? If you're not, you seem to have fully bought into the cult or something. So many links to so many videos… Here's an issue, too: - A drop of 0.06 is a drop with a 90 MPH 7I having a ball speed of 117 and dropping it to 111.6, which is going to be nearly 15 yards, which is far more than what a "3% distance loss" indicates (and is even more than a 4.6% distance loss). - You're okay using a percentage with small numbers and saying "they're close" and "1.3 to 1.24 is only 4.6%," but then you excuse the massive 53% difference that going from 3% to 4.6% represents. That's a hell of an error! - That guy in the Elite video is swinging his 7I at 70 MPH. C'mon. My 5' tall daughter swings hers faster than that.
    • Yea but that is sort of my quandary, I sometimes see posts where people causally say this club is more forgiving, a little more forgiving, less forgiving, ad nauseum. But what the heck are they really quantifying? The proclamation of something as fact is not authoritative, even less so as I don't know what the basis for that statement is. For my entire golfing experience, I thought of forgiveness as how much distance front to back is lost hitting the face in non-optimal locations. Anything right or left is on me and delivery issues. But I also have to clarify that my experience is only with irons, I never got to the point of having any confidence or consistency with anything longer. I feel that is rather the point, as much as possible, to quantify the losses by trying to eliminate all the variables except the one you want to investigate. Or, I feel like we agree. Compared to the variables introduced by a golfer's delivery and the variables introduced by lie conditions, the losses from missing the optimal strike location might be so small as to almost be noise over a larger area than a pea.  In which case it seems that your objection is that the 0-3% area is being depicted as too large. Which I will address below. For statements that is absurd and true 100% sweet spot is tiny for all clubs. You will need to provide some objective data to back that up and also define what true 100% sweet spot is. If you mean the area where there are 0 losses, then yes. While true, I do not feel like a not practical or useful definition for what I would like to know. For strikes on irons away from the optimal location "in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?"   In my opinion it ok to be dubious but I feel like we need people attempting this sort of data driven investigation. Even if they are wrong in some things at least they are moving the discussion forward. And he has been changing the maps and the way data is interpreted along the way. So, he admits to some of the ideas he started with as being wrong. It is not like we all have not been in that situation 😄 And in any case to proceed forward I feel will require supporting or refuting data. To which as I stated above, I do not have any experience in drivers so I cannot comment on that. But I would like to comment on irons as far as these heat maps. In a video by Elite Performance Golf Studios - The TRUTH About Forgiveness! Game Improvement vs Blade vs Players Distance SLOW SWING SPEED! and going back to ~12:50 will show the reference data for the Pro 241. I can use that to check AskGolfNut's heat map for the Pro 241: a 16mm heel, 5mm low produced a loss of efficiency from 1.3 down to 1.24 or ~4.6%. Looking at AskGolfNut's heatmap it predicts a loss of 3%. Is that good or bad? I do not know but given the possible variations I am going to say it is ok. That location is very close to where the head map goes to 4%, these are very small numbers, and rounding could be playing some part. But for sure I am going to say it is not absurd. Looking at one data point is absurd, but I am not going to spend time on more because IME people who are interested will do their own research and those not interested cannot be persuaded by any amount of data. However, the overall conclusion that I got from that video was that between the three clubs there is a difference in distance forgiveness, but it is not very much. Without some robot testing or something similar the human element in the testing makes it difficult to say is it 1 yard, or 2, or 3?
