Only seven flavors? 18!

I don't understand this kind of stuff. Why would I buy an ice cream just because a 75-year-old guy's face is on it?

It would be fine if it was a famous chef or something, but for me, Jack Nicklaus' name on ice cream doesn't add any value to the product.

Many years ago, a racecar driver built a small goods empire based on (1) having his name on things, and (2) donating a portion of the proceeds to some charity or organization. I wonder how many people dismissed it at the time, but now Newman's Own is a recognizable brand for lemonade and salad dressing and so on. Maybe Nicklaus is just following suit. Some of the proceeds of the ice cream go to a children's hospital.

You see Paul Newman as a race car driver?  He raced for a hobby - he was first and foremost an actor, and a very good one.  That doesn't change the fact that his brand became a regular on store shelves, but he was also a very good amateur chef, and was directly involved in the formulation of his salad dressings.

I never heard of Jack being any kind of a cook, so endorsing any food product is a bit of a reach.  I might try the Nicklaus brand ice cream if I see it in the freezer, just out of curiosity.  Good ice cream is a treat, regardless of who is on the package.

I like ice cream, and I would try this JN stuff just because his picture is on the carton. Why not? I am of that era of golf when he was still quite relevant with his sticks. I also understand why some of the younger generations of golfers do not pay him much attention now days. Nicklaus is a business man now, and not a golfer.

I met him a couple of times over a business table when the company I working with, was building the Coyote Springs Golf Course. He was a tough businessman, and usually got his way in no uncertain terms. It was all about how he wanted the course to play, and endorsement money with him. I suspect the endorsement money was more important. I say this because this course is out in the middle of now where. Still is. Did not matter to him, as long as his money was paid.

I played Coyote Springs Golf Course 10 years ago for free. Have never been back since then.

Jack will come out with a lot of flavors and they'll all be very good but Tiger will come out with a few less and they'll taste better.

Er... I knew that. Oops. Well, not the amateur chef part, but the actor part. I was thinking about a documentary coming out later this year about Newman's racing career and the association was most recent. Thanks for catching that.

Yup, I was a huge Jack fan growing up but this would not tempt me at all. Nor would I buy Tiger Woods ice cream.

It would be like buying Wolfgang Puck golf clubs.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Never can tell - Nicklaus Ice Cream might be the new Haagen Das. :smartass:

That is true, but that is just about as likely as Wolfgang Puck becoming the next Scotty Cameron.

Yeah, it does.

Lighten up, Frances. Grow a funny bone.

A friend of mine spends a couple of weeks every winter down in the West Palm area and he sees Nicklaus at a local ice cream shop with some of his grandkids every year. Jack loves his ice cream.

Lighten up, Frances.

It isn't funny and it isn't witty or clever.  It is more like that cartoon where one guy says, "The erection of that building took 3 years", and the other guy says "You said the word erection" - guffaw, guffaw, guffaw.

I'll make you a deal.  I'll lighten up if you grow up.

    • OMG Jerry Barber shot -20 back in 1960! Let's go back and time and bitch about how easy it is to play golf. My goodness, Calvin Pete shot a -21 in 1986! Wait a second, David Duval shot -26 back in 1999! Hold up, Ernie Els shot a -31 back in 2003!!!!  (all scores at The Sentry, it is a very easy golf course for PGA Tour players).  The concept that golf in the past is this protecting par or what not is just romanticized BS. Golfer's have been tearing apart golf courses for decades. Let's have a sense of perspective to base our opinions, ok?
