Repairing ball marks is a big one. One thing that really was annoying was a person I used to play with that would get no fewer than 15 to 20 calls on his cell phone during a round. Of course, he didn't have it on silent ring. We would be putting while he would be having a conversation with his kids or wife. One of our other partners came close to launching the phone in the lake. Yet calmer minds prevailed. Whew!

a very British one for me. At the end of a round i always remove my hat and shake the hands of playing partners. Ive played many people who wont shake your hand and just finish with a quick "good game". My mum always says that manner cost nothing and thats something i have always stuck by.

Its not as bad as not repairing pitch marks but still gets on my nerves.

Without a doubt.  Add not raking bunkers too.  Call it not maintaining the course for the benefit of all.

Not allowing faster players through when there is room to do so is a close second as both can affect many players, not just those in your group.

Given the fact that many of my local courses look like they were worked over by an A-10 Warthog, I want to say pitch marks are the biggest. However, I answered talking during someone else's swing. That really does a big number on me every time it happens.

Maybe I've gotten somewhat use to fixing multiple craters prior to every other putt.

I selected talking but the above hits the nail on the head.

Not using your divot tool on the green

Not filling divot holes in fairway.

Generally, being a social jerk. Take 10 seconds to get over a poor shot; then smile, you're playing golf.

Unfortunately, I've started taking the bad shot reaction to the range and let them slide on the course. Probably just as bad or worse. . .

If I considered not repairing divots the worst breach, I would probably add not raking bunkers to that. For me, not raking bunkers and fixing divots are not all that bad.

I think whistling or making a similar type of noise while someone else is making a shot on the course or range is worse. It's like you are saying you are so much more important than everyone else because it helps you relax at everyone's expense.

"Divot Tool"

the fact that the commonly accepted term for the tool used to fixed ball marks on the green is called a Divot Tool - and it's not used to repair divots - is funny enough

I dare anyone to find an analogy in another activity/hobby or sport.

For example - take this picture here of a face guard

None of the listed poll items particularly bother me.  I'm one of those lucky ones who is able to tune out noise or movement when I'm making a shot.  (My wife doesn't think this is a *good* trait.  Probly due to me tuning her out too.  lol)

One thing that bothers me is when people, mostly kids I think, spit sunflower seeds on the green. I encountered this two or three times last year.  Another is when a group jumps in front of me--especially if I'm playing alone and it slows me down.  It doesn't happen often, although it did happen twice on the same nine holes a couple months ago.  The first group, a father and his daughter, apologized for not seeing me and asked me to play through.  No harm, no foul.  The second group of jumpers was an old man and old woman who played slow as heck.  I wonder if their ears were burning as they played in front of me the last two holes of the nine?  lol

In general, I think everyone has their own peeves, and I try to comply with them especially as I end up playing many random people.

I don't do things like spit out sunflower seeds, whistle, talk or move around while people are hitting or putting. It's partly out of respect and partly because I don't really know what peeves they might have. It's generally best to not do any of these things listed in the poll.

For me, whispering is not an issue, and some light gesturing is not an issue for me, but some of my previous partners were upset by the slightest motion. So, I put down movement and talking as the worst things. It makes sense because it's like you don't care about their game. In general, you should always care about other people's games. It's like someone whistling as loudly as they can at a driving range while wearing ear buds. This attitude is like they don't give a crap about anyone around them.

Now walking off the green when other people are putting to me is not all that disrespectful. To me, it's the opposite. It's giving the person putting more space to putt. However, if I was playing you and you had an issue with that, I would stop walking off the green (not that I do anyway).

Not taking care of the course.   I've been playing a long time and people rarely bother me anymore.   If someone is talking or making noise, I've gotten used to it.

Walking away while I was putting out would irk me though.   Shows a lack of respect for other people.   Unless we were behind or slow.  If that happens, I usually say I am moving ahead to keep up pace.

THIS is a great attitude and it really highlights what I think is my TRUE pet peeve.

Since peeves can be incredibly subjective, we just don't know what a person's is (beyond simple courtesy things like the poll list).

If someone has a peeve, and they don't tell me about it, I can't do anything about it.  If they do tell me and do it nicely, I am about 100% likely to try to be considerate of it.  SO...

Peeve - people with random pet peeves that won't speak up until they get mad about it.  Or don't speak up and just bitch about it later on internet forums.  (C'mon - speak up right away and be friendly about it).

Has bunker raking (or rather, failing to rake the bunker after a sand shot) been mentioned yet? Drives me nuts to find my ball in someone's footprint.

Actually, the one thing worse than that (and this really is a massive peeve of mine), is half-arsed bunker "smoothing." There's the rake near the top right hand lip of the bunker, but as Mr. Ignorant Golfer has just hit from the lower left of the bunker, let's just flip over a sand wedge and smooth the sand a bit with the back of the club, eh? Job done. Erm...no.

Just for your information, there is no requirement to use a rake if one is not easily available or if it would unduly delay play to fetch it.  This is from the Etiquette section of the Rules of Golf:

Quote

Bunkers

Before leaving a bunker, players should carefully fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints made by them and any nearby made by others. If a rake is within reasonable proximity of the bunker, the rake should be used for this purpose.

The rules consider it perfectly acceptable to use a club or your foot to mostly smooth the sand.  After all we are talking about hazards.  I daresay that I can do as good a job with my foot and club as many that I've watched using a rake.

I do the same thing when there aren't rakes around.   I actually find that I leave the sand more uneven and lumpy with the rakes for some reason if I have to dig deep for  my swing.   That said, I've played many a time as the second group off and seen footprints + rake within 20 feet of each other and neither was used....

Music? As in playing music on the course? Never seen that - how do they play their music?

I use my cell phone for music. Mostly when playing alone but if I am with a group that is OK with it I will have it on. I try to be conscious of players outside my group. for instance if the parking for the green I am on is near the next tee then I will turn down the music so that it doesn't reach another group. The sound doesn't carry that far with it on full blast but I would rather have it too low than too loud.

I really enjoy being able to have some music on while I am playing which surprised me. I never gave it much of a thought until one day I had to bring the phone on the course (which I used to never do) for work reasons. Since I had it and was playing alone I dialed in some music and really enjoyed it.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
