For practice games I tend to dress conservatively. However, for matches and away days I like to dress up a bit. I have a pink outfit, a bright blue outfit, purple, orange and red. I am just about to put a bid in on ebay for a bright green pair of trousers, as I have a shirt to match.

  • iacas changed the title to What do you wear to play golf?

It really depends.  What I wear can range from a pair of  gym shorts and a t-shirt (if I'm playing late in the evening) to your standard tour attire (slacks, belt, polo).  Usually I wear some combination of a polo shirt and slacks/ golf shorts or a pair of khaki cargo shorts/pants (I tend to go for comfort), but if I'm wearing a t-shirt to work I'm probably not going to bother packing a collared shirt just to change into when I get to the course.  My home course technically has a dress code (at least there is a sign posted), but for the most part it's not enforced (outside of no metal spikes).

Shorts if I can (i.e. not p***ing rain or stupidly cold) and a polo shirt. I like something a bit more out there, but i also really like wearing proper golf attire instead of a standard cotton top. There's a reasonably strict dress code in my club, but nothing out of the ordinary for Ireland. I've never played or heard of anywhere that allows people to play in non collared shirts or gym shorts. Every course would be tailored shorts or slacks.

Ive worn everything you think of to play golf in. If I'm doing a quick nine or something or going to practice ill wear just a tee shirt or something causal.  But most of the time i wear typical golf attire. Polo, shorts or slacks , etc.  I like to look good when i do tournaments (look good, play good) so i will often don my tournament wardrobe with lots of bright colors. I like feeling like a peacock when i play in tourneys.

Warm weather: proper length shorts, ankle socks, collared polo, baseball cap (one of the recent USGA give-a-ways).  Colors tend to be subdued.

Cold weather: slacks, turtle neck topped with a sweater and/or a wind shirt or rain jacket. Long-underwear when we get closer to freezing. Rain suit and long-underwear with turtleneck can keep me going in almost any cold. Blue and subdued colors.  Sock hat a must.

I dress for the weather, and sometimes what ever I can get a way with. Cargo shorts, and collared shirt, are staples for the most part. Throw in a comfortable pair of walking shoes, sun glasses, 2 gloves, and a widewide brim hat, and I'm good to go.

Shorts and a nice t-shirt.  I do not like playing in collared shirts or pants.  Too "serious" for me.  Golf is about relaxing and having fun for me, so i like to dress very casual.

I'm the only guy in my league of 26 who doesn't wear a collared shirt.

Usually a polyester golf shirt when it's warmer, and a cotton polo when it's cooler.   With either polyester golf pants or shorts, depending on the weather.   In the winter I usually wear a turtleneck with a fleece top and corduroy pants.

At my home course or private courses, the shirt is tucked in.  Otherwise I leave it untucked.   It's rare to see a tucked in shirt on a public course where I live.

For scored rounds I wear the poly shirts and shorts, with cleats. Solid colors, no crazy prints. I stick to grays, blues, and whites, which matches my bag. I like the flexfit fitted hats with that mesh back, a little bit loose. Don't want my head squeezed.

I really like the PGA Tour brand "Airflux" polos, they are very reasonable $$ and not skin tight like some of these other companies' shirts.

For practice rounds I wear an old t-shirt and old pair of shorts.

My club has a strict dress code, so not much variety in types of outfits just different colours. Proper length shorts, collared shirts, and usually a golf branded logo hat when its nice out.  Slacks, with a long sleeve pull over when its chilly.  I also do not wear flashy/large belt buckles, but I often see some members at my club rocking them.

I mostly wear what I feel like wearing.  Now that it's summer that is shorts and either a t-shirt or polo.  In  a couple of months it will sometimes be jeans or slacks with a polo, maybe even with hoodie over that.  It all depends on the weather.  All of what I consider my home courses allow t-shirt and cargo shorts and jeans, so I really don't worry about it most of the time.

If I'm playing at a course with a minimum requirement then I go with their code, usually shorts (not athletic shorts) and polo.  I don't play any courses with stuffy codes, so it's not really a problem when I show up in cargo shorts and a polo.  I rarely play upscale courses except in summer, so slacks don't even come into the picture - when I do play up, it's only moderately upscale, not private country club upscale.

I will wear one of my several US Open caps, or my Tilley wide brim hat.  I also don't wear golf shoes, just Merrill Moab hiking/walking shoes.

Standard golf dress always with a collared shirt even if I am wearing a sweater in cooler weather, with either golf shorts or pants.  I am surprised to see the amount of golfers that wear polos since most of the courses in my region require a collared shirt.  Regardless, I prefer the collared shirt with a couple of buttons since i can keep at least the top button open and not have the shirt resting on the tops of my neck - just a personal thing.  I also tuck (and of course re-tuck) my shirt for the entire round.  Nothing too gawdy but I like to look well dressed - perhaps it helps my self-confidence.

A polo IS a collared shirt - at least all of mine are.  Maybe not in Jersey? :hmm:

Collared shirt with shorts (in summer) or golf pants (forgiving fabric) in winter. Nothing special.

For warm weather, slacks or cargo shorts and a polo shirt. On course, I wear golf shoes, as there are just enough hills that cross-training shoes won't work. Cross-training shoes OK for practice or par 3 course.

A lot of my polo shirts are quick-dry material, and have logos for my home course, my school, or events where I volunteered.

Can either wear a Hogan cap, or a broadbrimmed hat.

In cooler months, I go with full turtleneck and a windshirt. I don't like hard seams and zippers in outerwear. On head, I can wear either a wool Hogan cap, or an UnderArmour sock cap. (If it's colder than 40* F, I usually don't play; much prefer sweating to shivering)

    • I'd take the flawless swing. (Although we could have a lively discussion over whether or not such a thing exists....)  With a really great swing you can get far more GIR's and NGIR's then without one and approach shots carry such a high separation value.  Without needing to work on my flawless swing I could devote my valuable practice time to short game.

    • I saw a clip of Rafael Nadal's golf swing on X and it made me think of this topic.     Supposedly he is a 0 handicap. I am not sure I would play golf in public with a swing that awkward looking. IDK, maybe my swing is that awkward🤣. So if you are not a plus handicap, would you rather have Nadal's swing and a 0.0 HI, or not?
