Which iron is 100 yards shorter than driver carry distance?

Hey guys, I am curious to which iron is usually 100 yards shorter than your average driver carry distance. Is it the 5, 6, or 7 iron?

9 iron.  About 15 yards gap for each club, all the way down the line.

I'm curious.  Why the question?

My sand wedge carries the farthest (If I'm really, really, mad) but the difference is nowhere near 100 yards.

Depends on how I am playing.  When I play regularly my driver can carry about 275 or so.  When I play once a week at best 225 or so.  180 is about a 4 iron. 130 is about a 9 iron

I think I am a little off from most.  I carry my Driver about 220.  120 is a PW for me.

Assuming I hit a solid drive it's a 7 iron as 270-280 relates to the 170-180 yard 7 iron.  Of course I also have days where it doesn't seem to matter how hard I hit the ball my drive isn't going more than 250-260 and on those days it'd be a 9 or 8 iron.

Driver - Cleveland CG Black 265
Fairway Wood - Adams Tight Lies 16 Degrees
Hybrids - 18 and 20 Degrees Adams Pro
Irons - 4-PW Adams XTD
Wedges - 52 and 56 degree Cleavland CG16

I bet you're not far off.  My stock 9-iron is 128, and I carry my driver 225ish.

Remember, this is the internet, where golfers of otherwise modest abilities routinely hit their 7-iron 180, and carry driver 280+.

Well, I carry my driver about 350, 370 if I get really good. My gap wedge is my go to 250 yard club. So I guess I'll say gap wedge.

 

(My real answer is that it's probably my 7 iron)

      I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

      Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
