I once bet my brother a few bucks on "closest to the pin" when we were both about 85 yards out.  I put it about 20 feet away...and of course, he holed the darn thing.

It was a blind shot, so the look on his face when he looked in the cup and saw the ball was worth every penny.

Ok . . I have the best ever holed out story . .and it's one of a only few pitch ins I've ever made, to boot.

About 5 years ago - I was taking an "intro to golf class" offered by our local school district.  I signed up with my wife and it was great fun.  Each weekly class started with a lecture/demo and the we'd hit on the range and the pro would come work with us a bit, one at a time.  Now . .at this time I'm a super-hack . . very poor golfer.

At the last class, we got to play 3 holes alternate shot with the pro in groups of 4. .and the pro would hit as a *wildcard* or rescue type deal.  Ok . .so we all tee off.  I chose a 3wood and sliced it into the woods.  The only playable shot from the 4 of us was a little dribbler that went about 100 yards into the fairway.  So - up steps the pro for the rescue with a 3 wood . .and a mighty 3 wood it was . .it flew a looong way and ended up about 40 yards short of the green . .and about 10 yards off the fairway in some bushes behind a big tree . . . in jail . .dead .  .

So all 5 of us go into the bushes.  It was my turn to hit first.  I wasn't thinking about too much . . I could see the green and the pin but there was a lot tall grass, brush and tree branches in the way.  I step up and hit it . .from the second I hit it I knew I hit it good.  It landed on the green a few feet from the flag with a proper "plop" and rolled in.

I took a few lessons from the pro after that but then I didn't see him for a few years.  I went back and mentioned the golf class and how much I liked playing the few holes.  He said . .yeah, probably cause you chipped in from jail, lol.  I could not believe he remembered that.

I had a hole in one in 2014.

Other than that, probably the most memorable was at Pebble Beach in 1978. I was playing No. 6, the uphill Par 5. My fourth shot ended up in the left greenside bunker, very flat without much lip. The pin was about 50 feet away. I took a 5 iron, chipped out and ran it into the cup to save par.

My most infamous hole-out came in a faculty-staff best-ball tournament at the University of North Texas near Dallas. On a par 3 hole, the pin was cut into the front of the green. I hit a thin iron shot, and ran about 40 feet past the pin, onto an upper terrace. My first putt hit the terrace slope and ran off the front of the green. I then took an 8 iron, and canned a 20-foot chip shot to save par, which started a controversy!

The controversy: I won a dozen golf balls for chipping in. But, some people were upset because I putted off the green and then chipped in. The final ruling: I got the dozen, because the contest rules were vague. But, for future tournaments, the new rule stated that you had to sink your first chip/pitch shot in order to get the balls, and you couldn't have already been on the putting surface. From what I understand, the business law professors now monitor the chip-in contest.

Focus, connect and follow through!

My nephew and I were playing out in Arizona.  I was giving him 1 shot a hole and he was killing me.  On a par 3 I put my tee shot in a back bunk.  He played short, and then chipped to a foot or so for a safe "3" (net 2).  I was standing in the bunker and started to tell him how I had not holed out from a bunker in decades but I had just done it recently while playing the Univ. of Michigan course.  I told him I liked the lie and was feeling pretty confident.  I dug my feet in, waggled, plopped the ball a few feet from the hole and it rolled in.

Okay, it was just a "push" for that hole but from that point I got him down from $2.00+ to $0.75 by the end of the match.

I was playing with a student (a kid) on the 8th hole at Whispering Woods. The flag wast tucked right a bit and I had only 130 or so in. I said I was going to chip an 8I and aim left a bit. If I pull it, I'm still putting. Straight, I'm putting. Push it and it might get close. I said I was chipping an 8I to help control the spin and distance, too.

So I hit it, push it a bit, say "see, pushed that a bit, but it'll be fine" and the ball lands, hops, rolls a foot, and goes in the hole.

I had to act all cool like it was totally planned (it was, to the extent said above), meanwhile he was jumping up and down and super excited. :-)

Playing with my buddy a couple years ago and hacking it up good up and down a course we were playing for the first time..  we are both on the other fair way with the tallest trees I have probably ever seen.. maybe 80/90 yards out..  open up the pitching wedge a little bit and tell him I'm going to go over those darn things (of course I know I'm totally bullshitting, but what the heck).. hit it crisp and we hear a crack and that's about it.. after about 5 minutes of looking for the ball I decide to take a look in the hole and there it was with a broken cup.. it must of just nailed the edge, broken the cup and stayed in..  saved a par lol!

I was playing solo and pulled my tee shot left. Way left. Shocker. I know. I'm about 175 out playing out of crabgrass to the left of a bunker. This was #16 on the Eagle course for those of you from Dayton. It hit short of the green and started rolling to the back and disappeared. That sucker was hot and going hard. I assumed that it rolled off the back and down the hill. I looked around behind the green for a few minutes and started getting mad when I couldn't find it. The rough was not very tall. Then the idea hit me that it might have...

I walked to the hole and there it was looking up at me. =)

The down side is that I didn't get the joy of walking to the hole feeling good and smiling from ear to ear.

My favorite hole out was with my son.  He was probably 9 years old or so at the time.  We went to play an executive course near where we were living.  Since it was probably his 2nd or 3rd time out, I didn't want to play anything crazy long... I just wanted to have a good time.

On the first hole, I hit a horrible drive.  I was left with nothing but a punch out into the fairway.  It still left me about 170 up a hill.  I hit a pretty good 5 iron from there, but the way it hopped... I thought it went over the green.  When we got up to the hole, I was looking everywhere for the ball and could not find it.

My son walked past the hole and pulled out a ball and asked if I was playing a Titleist.  I laughed, walked to him, took the ball and smiled as I told him to put me down for a birdie.

I've had a few others, but... because it came with my son there, that one is my favorite.

I had one hole in one back in 1995 but the greatest smile on my face was just recent, playing the Tuesday comp at my home course, I hit a 7 iron through the 3rd par 3, playing partners gave me heaps about being long, but  even being in long rough I chipped a 9 iron back and holed it for my birdie, a smile:-) said everything, no comment from my partners.

Last summer I stepped up to a Par 4 dog leg right and I hit a perfect tee shot leaving me just about 60 yards out for my pitch shot left in to the Green.

There was no doubt the pitch shot to the pin was on target, it went dead straight with a couple of bonces and short roll right in.

It was a sweet Eagle.

I was on a straight par 4.   I hit my tee shot into the pine trees on the right.  I had no shot at the green.  My second shot hit a pine tree and wound up almost right where I was standing.  My third shot when across the fairway into some deep rough.   So I pull out an an 8-iron and hit it right on line with the pin but didn't see the ball land.  Go up to the green, and the ball is in the hole.  Par!!

That's my best hole-out story.  No hole in one, no hole-out for eagle, just a hole-out for par.

Holed out quite a few in 40 years. No Aces yet (GRRRRRRR), but I've learned to cope with THAT little issue. (more or less)

So I'll relate the last one- #14 Lansbrook Golf Club last December. Nice day, with a steady 15-20 mph wind out of the north (L-R). 135 to pin from left center of the Fairway. Aimed a 'bit' left for the wind because flag was plopped in the front narrow section. didn't want to aim too far left and possibly miss the green and head into trouble (water, trap and rough left). Missing right was a 'better' option. Hit a clean 9 iron, although as soon as I hit it I felt I pulled it a bit more than I had aimed. "Oh, nuts...". trajectory was good otherwise and then it started to take the wind that gusted up about halfway. It bent back and hit the left fringe just beyond and above the hole. Trickled back onto the green and started down towards the hole.... slowly. Was watching it as I got back in the cart to head over to one of the other guys ball to wait for his shot. Ball was still moving... slowly... Wind and slope helping immensely. Then it stopped. I thought it was close, but after the other guy hit his and got a different look from a better angle, we could see it was wedged against the pin. A big gust came and backed off letting the pin straighten out and the ball plopped in. Took at least 3 or 4 minutes from the ball strike until it fell in.

OK, I have two stories, one involving a guy I know and one involving me.

The guy I know was getting married and a mutual friend arranged a golf stag party. Well, on the second hole, a 245 yard par 4, the groom to be just crushed a 5 wood and put it in the hole! We couldn't see it because the fairway went up over a little rise. So we're at the green, poking around looking for his ball when somebody finally took a peek in the hole.

The groom to be started cussing a blue streak, claiming that the the guy was just effing with his head, trying to make a fool of him. Eventually he was talked into taking a look, and there was his ball!

We got him so stinking drunk at the cookout and party afterward that someone had to drive him home and back to the course the next day to retrieve his car!

My story is not nearly so exciting. Two years ago, employing the services of Golfnow, I and a buddy were able to play Hawthorne Valley Country Club outside Cleveland. It's one of the older Donald Ross courses in the area, and maybe the most scenic.

The first hole is a long par 4 with the tee set on a bluff overlooking the valley. The second shot has you hitting to a green set just the other side of the creek. I hit a good drive in the short grass, but not very long. I had about 175 in, and I think I hit a 4 iron.

I hit a little baby draw which hit in the fringe, bounced up on the green and started rolling toward the hole. My buddy started yelling "It's going in!" Then we saw the ball hit the flagstick and drop! My buddy started running around the fairway hollering! I think he was more excited than I was!

What a way to start a round!

Three years ago I was playing the fourth hole of a local course and after a good 5-wood drive I had 107yds. to the hole.  Punched a pitching wedge right at the flag.  Watched it hit, then roll up and into the cup.  No witnesses, so.... nice but not exciting.  Next year same hole.  Good 5-wood to 105yds.  Punched pitching wedge right at the flag, hit and rolls up and into the cup.  This time I'm playing with a friend, but he's busy looking for his tee shot and doesn't see my shot go in the cup.  When we get to the green he asks me where my ball is and I tell him "It's in the cup".  He looks at me, walks to the cup, looks down, grabs my ball and throws it to me saying "nice shot, jerk".  I laughed because that's his idea of a complement.  That was the only par 4 eagle that I've had witnessed.

I have had three holes in one. About 4 years ago I had four hole outs for eagle from the fairway. But my first hole out was the first day I ever picked up a golf club. My next door neighbor dads was going out late in the afternoon to play a few holes at the local Country Club. We went out on a hole away from the club house and he played the first hole by himself. When he finished the hole he game us each a Sw and a ball and told us to play some shots around the green he just finished on He left and played a few holes and later came back, but the important thing with this day was I threw my ball in a sand trap next to the green and swung the club, the ball went into the air landed and rolled into the hole. Man I was jumping up and down and shouting. We were probably 12 years old. I never touched a club again until I was 20 years old. I was a baseball player then and certainly not a golfer.
