If all you have is an AW, then you'll at least need a sand wedge and a lob wedge.

An AW that came with your set will not be designed for the type of short game shots you'll see around the green.

I will most likely catch a bit of flack for this, but...

You do not necessarily need any more wedges, except for maybe the SW. I find the PW handles most bunkers without any problem and the LW is rarely used at all.   That being said, It would it be nice to have all of them - definitely, but a necessity- no.  Also, you would need to work with them quite a bit to get by using only PW and GW.

As always, different strokes for.......yadda yadda yadda...

Hello have a question my golf iron set includes 4 thru pw ,aw do I need to add any clubs as far as wedges go thanks

I personally would get a SW. Check the lofts of PW and AW. Likely they are about (And I mean "about") 45 and 50. A SW would be about 55 or 56. Also, look at bounce of SW. I generally like about 12 degrees because of our conditions; others like higher bounce. I have a 60 degree lob but seldom use it.  Again, others love theirs. Check Threads concerning "Bounce". Best of luck in your search, -Marv

If you are fairly new to the game and the courses you play have sand traps, I would  suggest a 54-56 sand wedge with generous bounce.

As you progress, specialty wedges become more useful. I scoffed at it for years, but now carry 2-3 wedges in addition to my PW.

The PW (aka: “10-iron”) I think one could do without. A 9-iron can fit the bill of a PW, just by opening the club face a tad.   The two must-have clubs for ME are the AW and a SW.

As far as a LW, I’m one of those that won’t play a round of golf unless I have that club in my bag.   Mine is a 60* LW and I LOVE IT!

i also have a 72* UL (Ultra Lob)  which I’m liking the more I use it, which is not much.    With the 72*, I can  launch up and over any obstacle that’s right in front of my feet.

I would add the Sand Wedge.  Depending on your length you may be able to remove the A Wedge if you too many clubs.

I agree with those that suggest adding a 56* sand wedge. What has happened over the last few decades is that the OEMs have strengthened the lofts on irons to the point that today's 4 through GW actually coincides to the 3 through the PW from the 70s. That's why most sets have 50* gap wedges now.  You might want to add a 60* lob wedge too. I personally don't carry one, but many players love them.

There's so much bad advise in the above post I don't even know where to start so I won't (I feel a troll in our midst).

I would start out with a basic PW (≈47°), GW (≈52°), and SW (≈56°). Once you become more proficient and see a need you can look at adding a Lob wedge (≈60°). Some people stay with the three wedge system forever and there's nothing wrong with that at all. Remember bounce is your friend, especially in the SW.

Seconded. Everything about this post is spot on. Personally, I go with 4 wedges, but you likely won't need the lob wedge for a little while yet.

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

I would add what ever clubs you have room for, and can actually hit. Just don't exceed the 14 club limit.

AWs can work out of sand, and rough once you develope the swing technique to do that. That said, I would just add a SW to your current set for now. Wait on adding LW til much later on.

I use to cary 4 wedges for a long time, decades actually. I just recently retired my AW, and LW. Now all I use is a PW, and a SW, which by manipulating the club face, replaces my retirees.

Definitely the SW.

My 60-degree LW doesn't get used a lot but it has saved my bacon a couple of times. Add it if you aren't going to lose anything you'll really miss.

Something to think about. Save some money for now. -play some, practice some, maybe a set of lessons. Try and figure out  each club distance. Have a professional look at the set.

If you are new to golf I would not add anything more except a 56* sand wedge. Most beginners should not use a 60* lob wedge until they are pretty good with the sand wedge around the greens and sand traps.
