Could be drug use. Could be mental health. Dustin's always seemed like a guy who would be bottling things up. I wish him the best.

I've heard rumors that it's a drug problem, like cocaine. Not sure how valid.

Most likely he has girl friend problems. That's just a guess on my part. He's been (allegedly) dating Gulbis, and Gretsky. If he has to chose between the two, he'd be better off going with Gretsky. I've seen Gulbis with out her make-up caked on.

He's already married to Paulina Gretzky...they're both not amazing imo lol

Here's his full statement

Quote:

"I am taking a leave of absence from professional golf, effective immediately," Johnson, 30, said in a statement released by his management team. "I will use this time to seek professional help for personal challenges I have faced. By committing the time and resources necessary to improve my mental health, physical well-being and emotional foundation, I am confident that I will be better equipped to fulfill my potential and become a consistent champion.

"I respectfully ask my fans, well-wishers and the media for privacy as I embark upon this mission of self-improvement."

Dude, really??? I have no idea what's going on in DJ's life but I wish him the best. Always good to see these guys (athletes, actors, rock stars, whatever) recognizing the problem and fixing their lives before it's too late. Nothing sadder than watching an immense talent throw it all away.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

I really hope it's not true, because that is some life-ruining awful shit. And if it is true, I hope he's getting good care.

He's a genuine talent.  Hopefully he weathers this storm, whatever it is.

With the Golf Channel crowd, it's unlikely he'll be able to do it peacefully or privately...

What a damn shame, he's had a pretty good year too.

This is not a subject to be joked about or taken lightly, but seriously, you have to question the mental health of someone in his position who would choose someone as vile and hideous as Paula Gretzky for a "life partner". There are so many beautiful, lovely girls out there that it would be so easy for someone in his position to meet one, but look at who he goes for - Gulbis and Gretzky, two of the most plastic and evil looking types you'd ever see.

I would beg thinking that there are some VERY serious issues that he has to deal with and being married to "party girl" with her past is going to be part of the problem, not the solution.

Reading between the lines, it is very possibly substance abuse  - given that he talks about "self improvement", which is much more telling than simply "getting healthy", the more usual euphemism.

It sure ain't the issue of not being able to close out a major.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I would have to go with substance abuse as well. Would explain a 'leave' from the tour entirely, like for a 30 or 60-day stint in rehab. I wish him well. Have fought those demons myself.

Some random commenters on barstoolsports say that he did a ton of cocaine at Coastal.  Take that with a gram of salt.  I mean, a grain.

Who cares, lets all just hope he gets well and give the dude some privacy.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
