Pure Shots

74 members have voted

  1. 1. How many shots (of about the 30-33 full swings you take in 18 holes) do you "pure" or hit "really solidly" per round? (See first post for definition.)

I'll post my answer later, but to be clear, I'm talking about:

  • Full swing mechanics type shots. This doesn't mean "short game shots" or putts. Tee shots and approaches outside of about 70 yards, as well as those second shots on par fives.
  • By "pure" I don't mean absolutely pure, but I do mean shots where you can't really tell if you hit it a little funny (toward the toe, a half a groove thin, etc.).
  • Directionality counts. If you hit one absolutely flush but the face was 10° open and the ball sails 30 yards right… that's not a "pure shot".

I said 1-3. I have more that go in the right direction and about the distance I want. But really only 1 to 3 that feel flush.

1-3 was my vote, and some rounds it's not any.....lol

When I hit pure hits, most of the time they will trail off too much right, or left. That said they are slices, or hooks. Not 30 yards anyways.

If I hit 2 really great shots a round, I've had a good round. Most the rest, were close enough for me to score well.

0.

Obviously some are better than others, but I doubt I have ever hit a "pure" shot.

When you an allegedly grown man and it takes some kind of freak bounce to beat 260 yards, I don't know how any of the garbage balls I hit could be confused with that.

I voted 4-6, on average. Some days are a tad better and some days are worse (and I may not even a single one sometimes!). A lot of the "pure" shots are like 3/4 or flighted approach shots, and some may even be recovery shots. It's only the odd driver that I feel is flushed and heading exactly where I want it, lol.

On a good round, 1-3.  Probably 1...

I shot 78 today and hit 2 “pure”.

My first thought when I read the question was about 3 or 4, which straddles two responses.  On tougher days its more like 1 or 2, on really solid days it could be 5 or even 6.  Since I had a good solid 9 holes on Tuesday, I'm feeling optimistic, so I answered 4-6.

Just about my thoughts exactly.

You're a better player than I am, maybe I should change my selection to 1-3.

I voted 1-3. Sometimes I miss it a little and end up near the pin and sometimes I flush it and end up off the green.

For example, today I hit a 3/4 PW pretty much perfectly, but failed to properly account for the wind and ended up in a bunker. I'm not going to beat myself up over that result because the shot was executed as intended and I hit it as well as I possibly could have.

Sometimes I'm perfectly happy being 30' away from the pin or in a bunker off the tee because that's exactly what I was aiming for.

I picked 4-6 but there should be an asterisk next to that because they almost always come with driver. I might hit a good iron or 2 during a round but sometimes none at all. I'm not a super long hitter (240ish) but I hit driver on most holes (non par 3) now, and its not uncommon for me to get 5 out of 14 drives just the way I want them.

I might also have slightly higher standards.

I think a PGA Tour player might say 4-6 too. I think Ben Hogan said he hit one to three.

I'll hit the driver best in everyday play, consistently through the season.
But "Pure Irons" are few and far between.
I have had a few rounds where I absolutely flag a couple of shots in a round.
When using the irons on a tee box, I'll hit them more frequently than fairways.

I never considered purring a Driver being this type of definition.
I'll crush a drive or say to someone, you hit that well.

To me a Pure shot feels like a great practice swing with irons.

I voted 1-3, but feel the average would fall below one with many rounds playing in cruddy conditions.
I'm not counting driver in my thoughts.

I'll be honest here and say I never consider any of my good drives "pured" simply because they're by accident 😅

I feel good if I "pure" 4 shots per round.  Maybe one drive, two approach shots and one putt.  I go by the Ben Hogan rule... even your bad shots should be serviceable.  And those damned pure shots, that's what brings me back.

Putts don't count. Please read the OP and the poll question.

    • ..maybe 1 shot HC change might be a good starting point..
    • Yeah, I have a similar view. I was in the team of 2 and we got down 5 after 5. Get 1 pt if win the hole - whatever that game is called. We lost it 3 down with 2 to play so almost saved it. After the first hole when the single did a putt, then dropped a second ball, made a slight adjustment and sunk it, we thought it wasn't right. We couldn't do anything with handicaps etc so we just made them wait between putts - usually just one of us to putt. We were a 23 and 25 handicappers (probably playing to about 28) and the single was a 16 handicapper, but somehow had a HC of 20 (so that is 1 HC pt already). In terms of making it fair, and changing HC (HC1 + HC2 / 4), I think maybe adding 2 HCs to the double (or taking 2 HC off the single (after the adding and div by 4) might make it fair. Also maybe making a rule that the single couldn't change clubs for the second hit. Hard to say from that one game but possibly: - 2 shot HC adding - can't change clubs for second shot - need to have other team putt in between their 2 putts   Not sure. Do you think you'd still win or have these rules made it unfair the other way? Cheers for thoughts..
    • In that case I double down on my comments - I'll take the single guy and I know if I'm in that match against two similar players I'm pretty confident that I'm the favorite.
