So after tinkering with my bag setup, I have 13 clubs in the bag...  No real gapping issues with clubs either...  Driver , 3 wood, 3 & 4 hybrid and then 6 thru pw cobra one length irons, then 48, 52, 56 one length snakebite wedges.     I did drop the 5iron since I didn't hit it any farther than my 6iron.

I'm thinking possibly a 7 wood??  Since I'm good on the low range of my bag

How far do your 3 wood and 3 hybrid go? You could slot in either a 5 or 7 wood like you said if you have a gap there. But it's also possible that you don't have a big gap. I personally don't have room between my 3 wood and 3 hybrid for another club.

Or you can add a 60 degree wedge. If you're really comfortable with your 56 you can still use that the majority of the time and only use the 60 when you're super short sided or have to get one really high or something.

Let's say your 3-wood goes 230 yards, and the 3-hybrid goes 190-200 yards. Then you probably want a 5-wood. That would drop down to like 218 yards and fill in gap. With clubs being adjustable. You could change that a few yards by adjusting loft.

It is such a slippery slope choosing what goes in the bag. How many times do you use said club? What is the average distance(not the 1 time you smacked the hell out if it) would it actually benefit you( meaning going for that extra distance as opposed to landing it with a other club that you know like back of hand) the more I golf I notice the clubs and club choices of playing partners. Too many times do they use the wrong club just because it is in the bag. I never say a word not by business but still the results are so varied and more times than not the wrong option as the results show.

I would suggest a 60°. I use it almost for every shot inside 80 yards. I can adapt to a 56° but why give that advantage to the competition?

As a personal suggestion, I dropped the 3 wood and put another Driver in the bag. My regular is 7° of loft and the other one it´s 11°.
I loose 10-15 yards on 2nd shots on par 5s (because I'm forced to hit and Hybrid instead of a wood), but I gain from the tee because I'm able to choke down on the 2nd driver and enjoy the confidence boost that it's bigger face provide. The perfect fairway finder for me, and I hit it exactly the same way as my main driver.

@David L Yskes for the most part I only bag 13 clubs as well, but I’m the opposite of you where I have more wedges and nothing between the driver and 3h.  I do have options to throw in the bag when I feel like it would be good to have depending on the course and/or conditions (3W, 3i… and considering adding a driving iron as an option).

Having a rotating cast of club options depending on course and conditions is something you may want to consider.  Maybe one round you want the 5W, another round the LW.

Chipper… that is all… 😂

I’m obviously kidding. I don’t even think you’d need a 7-wood unless you have a glaring gap between 3-wood and 3-hybrid.

How ‘bout a left-handed club? I know it’s an out of the box thought. But if you have no gapping issues then why the hell not??

I’d consider putting the 5I back in the bag and seeing if you can get some more yardage out of it. Similar to you but I dropped 3H and added 4I

The only real opening I see is for a low bounce 60* Lob Wedge.  Personally I only have 11 clubs in my bag and am now thinking of reducing that to 10 unless I can get on a range and practice enough with my 2 hybrid.  My clubs are Driver, 2H, 4H, 6-9, PW, SW, LW and Putter.  I really have too much of a gap between Driver and 4H but need to find a club I can hit properly in between those.

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)

I believe this question is impossible to answer without knowing your distances.
Do you use ShotScope, or Arccos or similar?
If you posted your distances to us, we may see a gap that presents itself.

Without knowing your distances here are some suggestions.

  • A second driver that's heavily fade or draw biased depending.
  • A 60 or even higher lofted wedge
  • A chipper
  • 5 wood or 7 wood... 6 wood?
  • An extra hybrid
  • A heavy putter just for short putts
  • A rock club (if you've ever used one, you know what it is.)
  • A left handed 8 iron, just for escaping trouble
  • Thumbs Up 1

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

There’s no better excuse to buy a new golf club than, “I only have 13 in the bag.” 😃

I just thought of another option.
Have you considered a mini-driver?

Not Minnie Driver, the British actress. But a mini-driver, a smaller driver used to help hit tight fairways.

I had thought about it, but usually if it's a tight fairway, and depending on how i'm hitting the ball i either swing my 3wood or 3 hybrid.

I don't use shotscope or arccos, i do know my distances LOL and not what i think i'm hitting them.   The weird thing is last weekend i was swinging a Taylormade 5 wood Sim Titanium and on the simulator i was hitting it about 220+  which blew me away.. cuz i usually hit my 3wood about that far ( unless i crush it )

I did put my 5 iron back in the bag for now...  but it's my first club that i'm ditching just because it's the same loft as my 4 hybrid and i don't hit it as well as my 4 hybrid.    I had thought about a 5 hybrid, but i some times feel like it would just be over lapping with the same distances.

I've tried 60 degree wedges and it's never a good outcome lol..   i do like my 56 wedge and can always open up the face on it.

    • I would say your back nine is the second nine you play that day. It's part of what makes getting some of those holes tougher. Or, if 18 holes are played pretty often, out of A, B, and C, and you often play A and C, A is the front and C is the back, regardless of the order you play them in. That way not birdieing C #7 isn't overcome by birdieing the easier A #7 on a day you played it C-A instead of A-C. But, at the end of the day, nobody really cares except yourself.
