Brushing my clubs after each shot is habitual anyways so no its not a pain

I generally knock off a clump of dirt, but usually don’t have time between shots.

Admittedly, my clubs look pretty dirty 😁

Another is that iron covers are just another thing to keep track off. A waste of time.

And people don't do a very good job at keeping track of them. At the course where I work people lose them constantly, we keep them in a big trash can in the cart barn for a couple weeks before we throw them in the dumpster. During the summer we throw away dozens of them.

To be fair I suppose those little covers help to improve the resale value of the irons.  Otherwise I see no reason to use them.

Resale value for golf clubs? Maybe I am in the minority here, but by the time I retire a set of irons they are beyond worthless. If you are the guy that trades and buys the newest and greatest each year I suppose this makes sense.

This is actually really surprising to me, based on reading your posts over the last few years.

That’s the great part about having a launch monitor now. I’ve learned that the dirt on the club and face doesn’t affect anything.

So, I’m not that OCD any more about my clubs. It’s just a hunk of steel. 😁

Now I can be OCD about launch results 😂🤪😂

I played golf yesterday in the mud.  Every drive either plugged or backed up.  The ball, in every case, was quite muddy on one side.  For fun and as an experiment I realigned the mud to come in direct contact with my clubface when hitting my approach shot.  It did not seem to make much of a difference.  I think the clubface blasts through the mud and in the first milliseconds of flight the now displaced mud flies off the ball.  Maybe backspin is affected but the greens were so wet and soft everything was stopping where it landed.

makes sense about the launch angle not being effected. i would think spin might be a bit lower with dirt filled grooves though?

For traveling. I covered my irons before putting them in the travel bag and taking them to the airport back in the day.

I have a set of iron covers on my clubs.  I generally play without a caddie and when playing rarely clean the club in between shots.  Occasionally will have the time and inclination to do so.  Mostly will just wipe it if there is a huge amount of dirt on it.  Try to keep the covers on at all times when I am playing.  Once I get home I wash the clubs and post drying them put the covers on and store the bag till the next round.

I use iron covers because I am hopeful my clubs will last longer that way.  The pro's don't need to worry since their clubs are sponsored.  I can't afford to keep changing clubs regularly 🤫

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)
  • Aidia Z-009 Putter
  • Inesis Soft 500 golf ball

I wouldn’t worry about the clubs losing longevity from not using covers, unless you feel a need to replace them because of how they look, and even then the shots will likely do worse than bag clatter.

The dinging in the bag doesn’t ruin a club and require you to purchase new ones.

I was looking into buying little covers for my ball and tees.  Just being a smart ass, but the functionality of your irons is not affected by headcovers.  It comes down to whether the tiny dings bother you or not.  Essentially the only thing that happens to irons is the grooves wear down and the technology becomes old.  Hearcovers protect against neither.

I have hosel covers.

I had iron covers on my last set of irons, not because they were terribly expensive, as I made them myself at a very good price. I had them on my irons because it's stop the chatter when they were in the back of my SUV all the time, and I also like to keep the rain hood up on my bag to keep everything contained tightly. Bear irons hitting the rain Hood while jangling around would probably damage the hood. Iron covers don't slow play down as some profess, but they accomplish the function I wanted. Professionals don't have to worry about it because they get new clubs all the time from the manufacturers.

I went without covers on my irons for a while this year but noticed that at least one of my irons was rubbing on the graphite shaft of one of the other clubs and appeared to be causing a mark on the shaft so I'm back to covers. I also notice it's a much quieter walk now without the clubs rattling away in the bag.  I don't have covers on my hybrids or fairway metal but do have a cover on the new driver. I think if I were riding in a cart I'd probably remove the covers.

Perhaps a re-arrangement of your irons in your bag is in order.  Do you usually roll your bag on a push cart?  Arrange your longer/taller irons on the higher side of the bag.  Then your iron heads can't rub against the shafts of the shorter irons in the next divider down.

Well, shoot. Now I need to start a thread on how to load my clubs in my bag 'cause I don't think that will work very well.
