See, I think besides putting, I'd shoot about the same. I'm used to courses that are too lazy or cheap to mow, and I'm always stuck in terrible rough hitting duffs 30 yards out. I would just go there and play my normal game. Haha.

It is easy to play Monday morning QB, but Phil has been the 2nd best player in the World over the last 20 years, so it seems like he must be doing something right.  Hard to believe that he has so much more talent than everyone else that he can consistently make dumb decisions and still find a way to win 41 PGA events and 71 million US dollars.

There are guys with better swings than Phil and he is not as good a putter as Tiger.  In fact, he has had 4 seasons with a negative strokes gained putting (meaning he was below tour average putting those years).  Maybe he plays a bit smarter than people think??

The 13th didn't play as easy as people seem to think. It played to 2.8 or so all week (2.76 on Sunday). He lost a shot there, but he lost more by doubling #3 (1.7 shots to the field there) and about as many (1.2 shots) for doubling #5.

Interesting to note that his birdie on #4 picked up 1.04 shots even though it's a par five.

Well Father's Day felt suspiciously like Family Day this year so as a result I really only got to see little bits and pieces of the US Open but I gotta think that Nike can't be too happy with the image of Rory bending his club over his knee. Try working that into an ad campaign...

It was pouring when Phil was at this tee as well, with some wind.  He may have just hit it too hard.

OMG poor Phil. That was very sad to watch him blow a US Open once again.

When he slam dunked that wedge in, I thought that was gonna be his momentum shift to finally win this thing.

All he had to do was shoot even par yesterday. All those putts were grazing the hole, some of those should have dropped.

That was his best chance, as he gets older, his chances of winning are dwindeling. He was 75% on fairways hit with that 3WD he played all week. So he must have learned something, for him to put the driver away.

He hit a pitching wedge. I can hit a wedge that far so there was no reason for Phil Mickelson to have a wedge in his hands on that tee. He probably could have hit his 64. Phil mystifies me sometimes.

After spending all week there as a marshal, I don't believe the USGA needed to make the course as penal as they did to keep scores down. The greens were all they needed to protect the golf course. I saw very few guys making putts over 10 feet and, when they did, they were just lucky they hit the hole because they would all gone 10 feet past. The grain on those greens is confounding, something the best players in the world could never figure out.

I like this statement a lot.  they all played 4 rounds, they got what they got, everyone had ups and downs, and picking apart one hole after another is pretty pointless.  I'm sure every pro in the comp had dozens of holes where they could have eliminated just "one more stroke".  All those 'shouldas' and 'couldas' add up pretty fast.  Rose just handled the grind better than the field,....this time.

Tiger said it in an interview - (roughly)  "It's the grind - saving that up and down, making that putt in one instead of two, recovering that par, or even a bogie, after a bad shot" - and doing that on every hole, hole after hole after hole.......all four rounds.

Coming in 2nd 5 or 6 times sounds pretty bad.  Coming in "top 2" 5 or 6 times at the US OPEN sounds pretty good.

I wouldn't say Phil 'blew it' either. It wasn't a replay of 2006 where he was standing on the 18th tee needing a par to win. This time he stood on the 18th tee needing a birdie to tie, which given how difficult that hole was playing was very remote.

Having said that though, the club selection on 13 was definitely a head-scratcher. Rain or not (how does that reduce distance?), to have only 121y & hit a draw PW...it just seems like his thought process short-circuited there. I can hit a draw PW 121...in the rain.

Yes, he had early mistakes, like the doubles on the front 9, but those were early enough in the round to overcome & he did. The jarred wedge at 10 for the eagle put him back in the lead, and I believe he stood on 13 tee, the shortest hole on the course, playing under par for the field, either still leading or tied (can't recall)...and proceeds to not only miss the green but air-mailing it by 20 yards & carding a 4.

That was his Winged Foot moment this year, sadly. The absolute wrong play at the absolute wrong time.

I don't doubt that Phil stated it, but I'd guess that those numbers are best case.  He has to be assuming maximum roll out with the 3Deep to compensate for it's lower carry distance otherwise he'd have no reason to ever carry a driver.

I would disagree with this simply because of math.  As I understand it, the USGA's goal is always to get a winning score as close to even par as possible.  Seeing as how the winner was +1, I'd say they pretty much nailed it.

And I was disappointed with the way a lot of guys were making their bogeys.  I expect a lot of bogeys at the US Open because of tough greens, rough and pins, but I don't expect a lot of bogeys because guys can't hit fairways with 5 irons and can't hit greens with wedges.  Seems like there was way too much of that this weekend.  Phil at 13 was only 1 example.  I guess it could have just been Open pressure, but it surprised me.

What will be the winning score next year at Pinehurst? -5? E? +5?

My guess would be within a shot of par. Last two US Open's held there finished -1 and E.

    • To put into more context Shorter backswing helps me set up everything I need to do in the downswing. If the right arm beds 100+ degrees, it makes it nearly impossible.  Currently, I am not delivering the correct dynamic loft at impact. My vertical launch angle for a 6 iron is around 22 degrees. The PGA Tour average for a 6 iron is around 14 degrees. This is due to a few things. First, not getting open enough at impact. The more I can get my right side forward, the more the hands can get forward at impact. Currently my turn stalls. That goes into hip movement stuff. Second, I go into left wrist extension through impact. This adds loft. I need to go into left wrist flexion sooner and add a bit of wrist rolling over to square the face. This lowers the loft by shaft lean and closing the face. When I do my wrist stuff the VLA gets down to about 19 degrees. I still got a bit more to go.  We worked on some distance wedge stuff as well. More of a clock system. Position 1 is hands about waist height. Position 2 is between position 1 and 3. Position 3 is hands about shoulder height. Set up with weight on front foot. The backswing is a lot of torso pivot only feel. Speed in the downswing comes from torso pivot. Right side turns through, keeping and increasing pressure under the front foot. Don't slide the hips forward. It is more pivoting around the left leg. To help with smash factor and launch angle, add in a bit of wrist stuff and hitting the pitch like a draw shot. That is more something I need to work on.
    • Amazingly, I found this thread while looking to see if others have answers to the same question.   My preferred putting drill is a variant of one from LSW.  For context, as I type this, my handicap is at 10.3, and in my total 2026 rounds, I am at -0.20 strokes gained putting vs a 20 handicap baseline, and I am just shy of losing a full two strokes putting to the 10 handicap baseline, all this despite yesterday's round being marginally better than the 5 handicap baseline (yay for high variance statistics).  I also didn't practice much putting on a real green in 2026 (or 2025) until about two weeks ago, other than pre-round warm-ups.  This is obviously something I need to work on.  I think I last actively practiced (as in, many days, regularly) putting, on a real green, actively in Spring/Summer 2022. Anyway, the double around the world:  pick a distance (I often use 4' or 6') and lay down 12 coins, face-up.  The "standard" version is to do this at 3' and have to make 12 in a row.  That's worth doing periodically.  I know some people do this at 4' or even 5', but with scratch players making 80% from 4', I worry that if I tried to do this at 4', I wouldn't finish by sundown, and I'd certainly just get frustrated.  But the version I enjoy is to have to make them all, twice, eventually.  Pick a starting point and putt from there.  If it is made, and the coin is heads-up, turn it over.  If it was tails-up, pick it up.  The coins are tracking how many times you've made it from that spot so far.   A good score from 4' is 37 total putts for a bogey golfer (65% make rate) and 30 for a scratch player (80% make rate).   At 6', a bogey golfer (39% make rate) should be happy with a 61, while a scratch player should aim to do better than 44.  To make counting easier, I remember (or otherwise mark) the first spot, and when I reach that, I count how many coins are still on the green and add them to my total.  I actually don't count the first two times around (since the count after two go-arounds will be 24, right before counting to start the third) and add 24 at the end.   ----- I also like the "Fall Line" drill from ESC.  I stopped doing it a while back because I couldn't distinguish my own failure from being bad at hitting a 6' putt.  Now that I think I can hit a 6' putt successfully, it's time to go back to that one. Lastly, there are two indoor drills I have enjoyed in the past and am getting back to.  One is the ruler drill from LSW.  The other is one that I was shown in another thread that involves basically seeing what it is like to line up square, something I could have been missing.  ----- Okay, lastly for real, before a round I will also try to figure speed for 12', 21', and 30' putts.  I find a flat (or flat enough) spot on the practice green and step off 4, 7, or 10 steps.  I aim to hit the ball that exact distance (with the 12', I prefer to hit just past it;  with the others, I aim to hit the exact distance).  I view this as similar to learning some partial clock positions (or similar) with wedges to use as a baseline for preparing a shot.  Amazingly, for all my overall putting woes, when SG is broken down by distance I'm usually doing quite well outside of 12'.  This is one of those reasons I'm glad to see SG:P broken down by distance -- it tells me where I need to focus to improve.  While a three-putt from 30' has the same effect on SG:P no matter why, there's a difference in what practice priority to make if that's because the first putt rests 8' from the cup (where Tour players are 50/50) versus if the first putt regularly cozies up within 3-4' but that resulting putt is missed.  I almost never work on speed like this outside of pre-round warm-up.
