How many coaches did Sam have when he fashioned clubs from tree limbs anf developed his swing from there?

I tried this logic on my wife to try to save money on car seats.  I told her that my grandfather never used a car seat and lived to be 90, therefore, car seats are unnecessary.  She didn't buy it and I'm out $300 that could have been used on a driver.

I think the coaching is unnecessary. If he can't play by now, he never will. How many coaches does Bubba have? How many coaches did Sam have when he fashioned clubs from tree limbs anf developed his swing from there?

Coaching would've made him better, I can tell you that. And as mvmac said, the players shared tips and worked together often.

Everybody needs help or an extra set of eyes. You can always improve at your craft. Saying that "if he can't play by now, he never will" obviously isn't true in the face of late-bloomers like Tom Lehman or Steven Gallacher.

I don't know if your handicap is actually 36, but I can attest to the fact that a good coach will help you quite a bit. This is anecdotal, but I dropped from about mid to high 20s down to 15, and I see the light at the tunnel to breaking the 85 (72.9CR/130) barrier. This is all thanks to good coaching.

Coaches help you spot things that you can't. Even if you video yourself, you could easily miss something obvious to a coach.

Try a good one***, and you will see your handicap drop.

***Not advertising 5SK or anything, but you won't regret it. I certainly didn't.

Is this just regurgitated info or does this guy know something we don't? Or just trying to get clicks? Or all of the above? :-P

He probably got it from here.

Yeah, or something. I'd put Grant in the lead based on what I know, but it's like the early election polls when you have 12 candidates: the "lead" might be with 20% and by 1% over the guy in second.

According to Tim Rosaforte (put as much stock in this as you want…), Tiger has reached out to nobody. Not Todd Anderson, not Pete Cowen, not Grant Waite, not Chuck Cook… nobody.

His comment in the interview seems correct then.

As for finding a new coach, it sounds like it might be a while before Woods does that after parting ways with Sean Foley last month.

“Am I looking for a new coach? As of right now, no, I'm not,” Woods said. “Right now I'm just trying to get physically better, stronger, faster, more explosive.”

Should we just schedule the next MRI, to save time?

Tiger is a workout junkie, he always has been. You would think that he would tone down the workouts to fit his 38 year old body. There was talk that years ago his left knee problems stemmed from a kick by a Navy Seal in a kill house. Crazy fascination with the military.

Tiger has said that among well known golfers, only MNorman and LTrevino 'owned their swings', implying some kind of self teaching and resistance to other ideas. And both these guys did have 'unique' golf swings.

I vote that Tiger should call on Lee Trevino to get some coaching tips since Moe is dead.

Doesn't he usually put Hogan in there too?

Small point of correction: he said Norman and Hogan.

Hogan worked with everyone. He constantly asked guys to take a look at his swing, and would talk with lots of people about their swings.

Plus, there weren't really very many instructors back then. The "instruction" came from the head pro or an assistant, but he was the same guy in charge of doing everything else. Oftentimes the "head pro" was a PGA Tour player coming back for the winter season.

Trevino will talk his ears off, drive Woods batty, so happy to get away from him on the course, wins 3 majors :-D

Q: Has he ever had coaches who didn't know as much as about swing as he did?

"I would have to say on the technical side, I probably don't know as much as some of them," Woods said without singling out Butch Harmon, Hank Haney or Sean Foley. "But from a feel standpoint, which is something I think is innate because of what we're able to do at such an elite level, yeah, I think I know a lot more than they do. Because they've never played down the stretch of a major championship. What do the hands feel? What does the body feel?"

Woods is known to take only what he wants of the instruction offered.

"You have to understand your practice sessions," he said. "Will they work on the back nine on a Sunday of a major? Either yes or no. And I think that's one thing I've always tried to tell all my coaches. Will it work or not work? And if it's not going to work, then we're not going down that road."

I can imagine Tiger being a challenging player to coach.

It's not like team sports, is it? Phil Jackson has a bazillion rings - so he commands respect. It's not like there's a teacher with 25 majors that Woods feels deferential to. I'm not saying that 25 majors makes one a good teacher, but the psychological impact.

    • Day 126: 5/1/24 Putting and chipping practice. Slow motion swings with 8-iron.
    • #4 - 1st hole at Kingsbarns I rolled in a 15 footer for birdie. Showed my caddie an old guy could still play a bit. #3 - 18th hole at Basin Harbor Club, Vergennes, VT. I had played matches against my nephew over the years. He had never beaten me although through the years he had become a long hitting teenage golfer. I was 1 up but bunkered near the 18th green. My nephew had a long putt for birdie. I splashed out of the bunker to 4 feet. He rolled his first putt close and I gave him the par. Sadly for him, I rolled mine in and won our last match. He went off to college and then Europe for a Ph. D. It was our last match. Family champion forever. #2 - First playoff hole in the City of Livonia, MI “65 & Over” division. I rolled in an 8 footer that broke about 4-5 inches. #10 Whispering Willows GC. #1  18th hole at TPC Prestancia, Sarasota, FL. A 4 foot slicing putt for par to beat the prior year’s Member/Guest winners and win the Member/Guest with my father at his club. I was having heart palpitations as I played the final hole solo when my father put two in the water. There was never a better golf sight for me when that ball dove into the hole.
    • Finally, wedges getting somewhere. This one a punch gap from 87 yards to about 12 feet. Contact and ball flight absolute restaurant quality. It's nice when grass comes back.
    • Tiger on the Today show today. At 3:25 he says he's working on keeping his arms in more and rotating his hips better. Nice.
    • Day 11- Slow,  short swings with short practice club.
