Yeah, I can see Fox overspending to up their presence in golf and can see that being Feherty's strategy.

He'd be dumb to go to Fox. Why go there to be heard in one event? I bet NBC snatched him up, esp with Maltbie getting up there in age.

His shtick is a little tiresome but I still don't mind him.

My thoughts exactly. He's hilarious when he's spontaneous but absolutely cringe-worthy when he forces it. Unfortunately he forces it all too often. He needs to realize that not every comment requires a punch line. I'll take him over McCord any day and twice on Sunday's.

I like both McCord and Feherty, although McCord was difficult to listen to for about 5 years when everything was a forced joke. Recently, he seems better. David was funnier in the late 90's, early 00's when he wasn't forcing it. He tries too hard on Feherty sometimes for slapstick, and it may have leaked into his analysis.

I'm sure someone like NBC will pick him up, but I'd like more analysis with natural cleverness than forced.

The truth will come out eventually as to the negotiations -- the old "we couldn't find a role for David" is so phony -- he had a role for almost 20 years...

The sad reality is that network televised golf is one big ugly commercial, regardless of the clowns who do the commenting. Thankfully these days (almost) commercial free feeds can be found online for almost all events, and Portuguese is a beautiful language :smartass:

Maybe he wanted to sit in a booth instead of being on-course and CBS wasn't going to (or couldn't for contractual reasons) bump one of the dudes already there.

I like Feherty; I have a similar sense of humor.  I hope he lands someplace I can see him regularly.

Who was he paired up with at Barclays?  Feherty was just fine, but I could barely stand to listen to the other guy.

He will be missed. I wonder if the players knew he was leaving. It seemed like Jason was thanking him (or something to that affect) after their on course interview last weekend as the camera was cutting back to the booth. I'm not a fan of his show on GC but I do like his on course coverage.

Perhaps a good opportunity here for fox to up their profile by snatching him up?

Maybe, more likely NBC, make him exclusive.

Feherty tows the line between irreverence and decorum very well. A truly entertaining broadcaster. You can feel his love for the sport in every round he covers, whether or not his one-liners succeed. I enjoy his style very much.

Absolutely.  He treats his job more as a comedian who just happens to be talking about golf when I'd prefer a golf announcer that knows he is funny.

The bottom line, though, is that when I watch golf, I watch for the golf, so no offense to Feherty or McCord or Faldo or any of them but I honestly could not care less.  He won't be missed by me and unless his replacement is the worst human being on the planet,  forget about him very quickly.

Sorry.

Small thing I might note. I was at the PGA all 7 days and the final 2 days I finally spotted Feherty (with the final groups of course). First thing I notice is he's in damn good shape actually for getting up in years, second thing I noticed was that while he's getting up in years, he was constantly having to RUN up the course as well as the CBS camera guys to get where the shots would roughly be landing.. I don't know if it's just the Straits setup that doesn't allow for cart travel, but I could honestly understand if he was pushing for a Booth/Tower job instead of on course commentator if he's constantly having to run around a golf course as he's getting older. Food for thought?.

That's a good observation.  That (a different role) could have been a large part of failed negotiation.

I remember him one time just tearing up one side and down the other of Tiger who hit a fat shot and took a monster divot.  He kept showing it over and over again, slow motion, etc and was just going to town on him.  Can't remember what tournament it was but funny as heck.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
