Your theory is exactly right.Every one who cant break 90 should use that method to shoot better scores.Granted its not as fun but then again how fun is spraying ball everywhere, taking penalty strokes and shooting high number. The person would have to be a good iron player because 1 mishit with a shorter club and your adding yards to holes. No offense but I dont see how anyone can hit a pw 150 yards unless your hitting it low and thin.Rarely see pros hitting pw 150 except for longest of hitters.

Tried that plan today but hit my 2nd shot ob twice and had four 3 putts. In that plan it says ye shall not hit it ob and thou shalt not three putt. Broke both commandments, deserve the 100 today.

The strategy is explained  on How To Break 90 book.   But for bogey golfer wannabees, hitting any club consistently is not a given thing.   Heck, I am a bogey golfer and I can hit OB with any club, including LW (skull it over the green into water, e.g).    My 150 club is gripped down 6i or full 7i.   If I can hit either one consistently, I can score in low 80s.  No need to play for bogey.

Ill tell u my 150 yard club in a sec but first i want to show you the fountain of golf. My pure love for the game led me to this point and id really like to share with anyone who will listen. I tell everyone who will listen but esp noobs or higher handicaps. I want the lowest score possible, the easiest way possible, and i dont wanna be golf mad, i want to have a blast while doing it. I pondered that for a long time. When i figured out the solution, i googled it and what d' ya know? Im not so crazy after all. IT DOESNT MATTER!!! Ive shot legit rounds in the 80s and at 32 years of age in pretty decent shape i CANT hit it over 193 at the moment. DISTANCE is helpful but NOT required. If u are playing the correct tees all par 4s should be right at 400 or less. Lets say 368 is the average. Hit ur 6 150. Hit ur six again 150. U are now 68 yards from the green. Take a wedge and hit the ball to the fattest portion of the green. Make a putt and u have a par. 2 putt and u have a bogey. Bogey golf is good golf unless ur on tour. Try it and i doubt you will care what club u hit 150. If u think im crazy, google plugged in golf how to break 90. They confirmed my little plan was unorthodox but not crazy. 2nd try out with it i went from shooting high 90s to shooting a 88. SORRY, Had to say all that. To answer ur ?, i hit my 8 iron 150. When i do use woods and im hitting it well, i get it out there about 220. (Lol and that game plan usually gets me a 92. If im hitting the woods well...if not hit well and i follow that plan....hello 104.)

I guess that's ok if you want to only ever shoot high 80's but golf would lose all fun for me at that point. I want to always be the best I can be. I want to be a scratch golfer one day. I usually assume that's what everyone wants. I could probably shoot 80's almost every time by bringing only my 5 iron, a gap wedge, and a putter on most courses but unless it's just a joke round I don't see how that is fun. To each his-her own.

Yeah, I don't know where my 6i is going much more than I do my driver, but at least I'll probably be closer after a driver than a 6i, so I'll take my chances with 80 fewer yards to cover.

Which club you use for what distance is simply another dick measuring contest... it's what keeps the bad players playing bad. Standing on a par 3 150 yards partner:  What club did you use? Me: The club that would put it where I wanted to with these conditions at that distance... partner:  Yeah but which one Me: .... Want to know your distances? Want to know the overlaps? Get on a launch monitor, OUTSIDE, and do a club mapping.

I dunno 'bout you, but I never use my 7i to measure my dick, I use my driver...or two 7i.

If you don't practice and get comfortable with your driver how're you ever going to get better at it? Don't say the range either because what I do on the range looks almost nothing like what I do on the course haha.

I tend to hit a 6 iron at 150 too, but keep in mind I'm playing a fairly old set of Adams Ovation High Launch clubs I've had for years.  I don't even know what the lofts are, but I've used them enough to know my distances with them.

I probably could power a 7 iron to 150 and maybe if I hit it really pure an 8, but really that is going to sacrifice accuracy just to force the issue.

this is a pretty stock shot on par 5s and long par 4s

first, since my drive goes about 550 to 700 yards, I'm frequently hitting BACK to the green about 150 yards

I don't have a club that short, of course - but if I choke up on my putter about a foot, and then just GLARE at the ball - it usually lands about 150 yards away

so it's more a matter of making sure I get it started on the right line

Yes, but don't forget to shorten your GLARE. It seems to be the main reason for your de-approach shots going too far back. BTW, Pro-V1x are a little less sensitive to glares especially the "mad glares". The Top Frights are just that, they scare too easily.

There is so much goodness in this post that I can't even start.  "de-approach"  LMAO

Being 64 years old and having had three back surgery, I hit a 5H (25*) for a 150 yard shot. I can it my 6 or 7 150 but it has to be a pure strike off a good lie. I find the hybrid easier to hit and the ball lands softer to hold the green. BTW I only hit my driver about 220 to 230 yards. Bottom-line I don't hit my clubs that far. I make up for it with accuracy around the green (100 yards and in).

At just about the same age I can nuke a 6h or hit an easy 5h for 150 yards.  20 years ago it was a 7 iron, but I was never as accurate as I am now with the hybrids.

Just watched the Shell's WW of Golf between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus in 1995 at Pebble Beach. Tom would hit a 7 or 8 iron and Jack would hit a 7 iron. Something to think about. And a long drive would be about 250 to 260 yards.

    • I have won the net division of the 2024 William Anderson Match Play Championships at Neshanic Valley Golf Course.
    • I won the net division of the match play tournament. Yesterday was the semifinals and my opponent conceded the round to me on the 2nd hole because he knew he would be unavailable for the final today. I got lucky there and got a bye into the finals. We did end up playing our match as an exhibition and I would have lost. It was the worst round of the tournament for me and I think knowing that the match didn't matter might have been a factor. I'll write up a blog post about the whole experience at some point. Today I won, 3&1. My opponent and I halved the first three holes much to his credit. I was striping it and he just kept scrambling and hanging in there. We both blew up on the par 3 4th hole but I ended up taking that one by holing an 8-footer for double bogey. I went up 2 after he put two in the penalty area on #5 and promptly gave that hole back by putting my tee shot into the penalty area on #6 by a foot. It's important to note that most of the penalty areas on this course are deemed environmentally sensitive areas and we are not allowed to enter or play shots out of them. So even though I physically was able to play a shot from where I was on #6, I could not, by rule. I followed that by winning #7, making a 25' birdie putt and finished the front 9 3 up after he had some bunker trouble on #9. I went up 4 by winning #11 (we both sucked on that hole but he missed the putt to halve). On #12 we both hit the green with our tee shots. He hit his first putt past the hole and I lagged mine inside of 4' with an uphill putt for par. His putt for par was too long again, just inside of mine but definitely outside of gimme range. I gave him that one for bogey. I felt at the time, being 4 up, that I didn't want to win the hole because he ends up missing a 3-footer and fourputted or something. I wanted to win the hole by making my par putt. I did not. He probably would have made the putt anyway (he's not me after all, and he made everything in that range all day) but it seemed like the sporting thing to do at the time. He was genuinely surprised I gave it to him, butI felt good about it. Then it almost bit me in the ass as he started to mount a comeback. We halved #13 after he made a great up & down and he took #14 with a long par putt. He also won #15 with a 5' birdie putt. We halved #16 with a pair of bogeys after he put his tee shot in the water and I missed a 4-footer for the win. We got to #17 and I was still 2 up. He hit his tee shot just off the back of the green to an extended apron area short of the back bunker and I put mine on the green pin high but 30' away. He was actually closer so I played first and hit it within a foot for par. He didn't hole out for birdie which sealed the match and ended up making bogey on the hole. With the pressure off, we both played the par 5 #18 well. He played it as a three shot hole like a normal person and hit it to 8' and two-putted for par. I striped my drive and ended up with a downhill lie to an uphill approach like 180 yards out and gave myself the green light to go for it in two. Thin hooked it into thick rough to the left of the green with a bunker in between and hit a high flop to 4', probably my best shot of the day. Made the birdie putt.
