What one shot, when you hit it just right, makes you feel so good that you're tempted to walk off the course on that one high note?

For me, it's the 3-wood on my second shot when I'm about 210 out and I hit it long and straight right by the hole. Something about hitting it off the ground and watching it pick up momentum and then seemingly suspend in the air and drop right by the cup. I hit a couple of those today and I felt like heading straight to the clubhouse and leaving.

When close enough, my flop shot is my favorite. Hardly ever miss hit that shot.

Nothing like a pured mid iron shot.

Not a particular shot, but it's the latest one that goes perfectly as planned.

Yesterday it was a pured PW that I hit from about 140 right at my target - center of green - that drew a couple of yards towards the pin and then checked even further left to the hole.  Finished about 6 feet immediately behind the pin.

When you envision the ideal shot, and then actually execute it, it's such a great feeling. :)

If I was forced to pick a particular shot, then I'd choose a mid/short iron where I take a less than 100% swing and manage to hit it the exact right distance.  That's a great feeling.

I had two last season, and both were similar.

1) Short Par 5 - I'd hit a very long drive into the rough under a tree on the left and had one shot at the green - a full flat 8 iron punch hook. I nailed it 140 yds onto the green and left myself a putt I sunk for an eagle.

2) During a tournament on a par 4 I put myself in a worse predicament and played a risk reward shot between two trees and under two branches with a choked up hard punch shot with my 6 iron about 140 yds. played back just far enough in my stance that it had enough backspin on it that it stuck when it hit the green. Birdie. I was playing catch up so why play conservative?

Both went perfectly as planned. It feels real good when things go that way.

Forced to pick a particular shot? A lob shot about 50-55 yds. with about a 9 to 3 swing.

I really enjoy a chip shot from off the green that gets holed for birdie, especially when I am simply trying to get my chip shot close enough to the hole to make par

I too don't have a particular shot. I like a putt that feels good, tracks, and goes in just as much as a 5-iron that comes off as planned and a drive that carries forever down the fairway.

I enjoy hitting the big hooks or slices underneath and/or around trees.  I had an occasion recently, where I had 150yds or so to go with a tree in front.  I had to hit a low hook around the tree.  It was just perfectly executed, around the tree and rolled up to the raised green to 2ft away for a tap in birdie.  Not that I want to intentionally give myself those types of shots, but I seem to hit intentional hooks/slices fairly well.  And just like @The Boss said, I really like the perfectly hit 2-iron.

Nothing beats hitting a 2-iron blade on the screws and hit the center of the green 240 yards away.

Showing your age.  It has been a while since the inserts on woods were screwed in.

I am with @saevel25 , a well struck iron feels great.

My favorite shot is with my driver.   I recently bought a used Taylormade R1 driver, and when I hit that thing well, when I hit it squarely, it feels soooo good.

I actually managed to shape one of my drives the other day.   I had a dogleg right, and I took a nice swing and let the club head lag a little, so I hit a beautiful fade right around the dog leg right to the limit of how far you can hit it without going in the marsh, the most perfect drive possible.   No real long, but perfectly placed.

And then the other day on a different hole, I hit a 250 yard drive right down the middle.   That's about 20-30 yards longer than my usual drive.   What a feeling when I take a swing and really spank that ball hard.

Why can't I do that all the time?

A well hit driver off a tee box with a narrow, tight fairway. When the ball screams off the sweetspot and goes high and long straight down the middle of the fairway.  And you get that feel that says.... "I did everything perfectly right".... Ahhhhh... Soooooo sweet!!!

Holing wedge shots from the fairway.  Probably done this 15-20 times in my long, painful golf career.  Three times for eagles on par-5 holes, several for birdies on long par 4s, the rest for pars on holes shaping up to be bogie, double or perhaps even 'other' on the card.

Also chip-ins and hole-outs from around the green. Either way, love to see them go in for me occasionally.

My favorite shot is the one that brings an end to the "danger" when I'm having a really good round.  On my home course, its clearing the last water hazard right in front of the 18th green.  My only 69, it was driving successfully past the water on the last hole at Talmore in Southern Pines.  It doesn't mean the work is over, but the potential for a catastrophe is, and I could start to relax and enjoy the day's success.  Up to that point, I'm doing everything in my power to ignore my score and play each shot as it comes.

4i, the longest iron I use, I love the sound it makes when pure, and the ball flight starts so low and keeps rising and rising, such a thing of beauty.

Bingo!!!!  This is exactly what I was going to say.  My favorite is the latest one that did what I wanted it to do (obviously that doesn't include tap-in putts).  Thanks GD for the assistance.

Lagavulin 16 year.  A little ice, nothing else

(my favorite golf shot is usually anything that goes as planned when a little shot shaping is also required)

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
