Golf and Alcohol

Recreational golf is fine for having a few beers once in a while but every time you play is too much for me. Having to be under the influence of something in order to play well or enjoy an activity is just not the kind requirement I want.

For my normal morning play, I'll occasionally have a beer around the 16th or 17th hole, if the bev-cart comes around.  Most times, I wait until we're all done.  Now playing some kind of non-serious event, a scramble, for instance, I think a bloody mary on the first tee is just fine.  Its almost never more than one, though, my game only gets worse if I have any more.

When I was younger, I never would drink when playing. Now that I'm older, I seldom drink when playing.

But now that I am older, I'll usually enjoy a few beers after playing.....

Especially afterwards with golfers who love the game as much as I do....

Honestly, I drink far too much beer in general, but not often on the golf course. If I'm playing with a couple of particular friends, a beer at the turn is part of the ritual. When I'm alone, I never drink till after the round.

Really, one or two beers isn't going to hurt anyone. It may even help relax you, but actual drunk obviously would be ridiculous. The guys that break out the hard liquor and really go nuts aren't really worried about golf.

Stone is a great brewery.  I voted often, usually a beer each 9, but really depends on what is going on, what time of the day.  Am I walking or riding.  During a Club Championship round, never, Saturday or Sunday afternoon round, probably, morning round probably not.  Friday couples, always.  

We have several of our better players that pick up a 6 pack for the back 9. One that definitely plays better when he is drinking.  Won the club championship 11 times

If I'm playing alone or walking I usually will wait until after the round is over. I guess it also depends on who I'm playing with. I have a 3 or 4 friends that don't drink so I won't drink when I play with them. Conversely I have a few friends who really likes to drink. When we play together I know by the 3rd hole beers will be in the cart. So I voted occasionally. I definitely play worse when I have more than 2 or 3. It just seems a lot harder to concentrate once you've caught a buzz. That doesn't mean I don't have just as much fun when I have a few.

Each to their own I supoose, but I would tend to hoist a couple AFTER the game, not during.

Sometimes the biggest factor dissuading me from walking is there is no easy way to carry the beer.

Did you take that picture at our 3-day member guest? 

We actually had a player lay down under a tree on one of the holes after they lost a match, he was found several hours later still asleep under the tree.

If I play with my brother we might have a beer, maybe two at most. We live in different states so it is a big deal to get together.

If I feel tense I walk faster. I will avoid the cart if necessary.

It takes everything I have to shoot an 86 - 88 and the last thing I want is a buzz.  I also have become more cautious about drinking and driving so I will occasionally have a single drink at the 19th.  I am however an afternoon golfer and usually arrive home in time for a good scotch (or 2) and a cigar.  Great way to end a day of golf.

I don't care what other golfers do as long as they don't become idiots.

I had 6 beers today and a few hits of Crown outta my flask.  Um, didn't help, shot a smooth, drunken 91.  So, not saying you SHOULD drink, just that I do.  Dammit.

Years ago I was the co-sponsor of an outing that encouraged drinking and golfing, it was actually a study in the law of diminishing returns. It was non-handicapped event, but you were allowed to take 1 stroke off for each beer you finished (in the 2nd and 3rd year it was progressive, 1 stroke for the first 6, 1.5 for the second 6, 2 strokes for anything over 12 beers). We were young and stupid, and one guy lived on the course so we could go there afterwards. The golf got really sloppy, except in the 3rd and last year of this debacle - there was a friend of a friend who was a country performer and also had played in the satellite tour in Texas, he had quite a thirst and a very good game, he shot a 70 and the best estimate was he averaged a beer a hole. No one ever really added up the scores, but he was named the forever champion after the 3rd year. Daly, in his hayday, would likely have been the global champ.

 

Anymore I have maybe one at the turn with a brat, but usually a water on the course. Then no more that a couple of beers after the round.....too old for those shenanigans these days.

Actually I like the idea of a drink at the 17th or so.

Can't always time the cart girl so perfectly though.
