Referees are now issued a straight razor. If there's a dispute over anchoring, he's authorized to test for a gap using a quick swipe with the razor. It seems that the players have got wind of this and thus far, testing has not been required. ;-)

No, they're not.

Just this past week I was watching a tournament on TV and I saw someone anchoring his putter. I know what I saw.

If it was Bernard Langer or Billy Mayfair, they have stated they are not anchoring and Rule officials have cleared them to play this way. They hold the butt end off the chest by an inch or two.

OK, but it sure looked to me like anchoring.

I guess you didn't in this instance.

I moved these threads to a more appropriate topic. In the future, when a moderator asks you to stop posting off topic commentary, please honor the request.

As long as it's not touching. It can be 1/2" away and you're fine. Contact with clothing is fine.

If this is true and it looks like officials are letting Lagner and Mayfair play this way then I'm going to back to the sternum putter

I was touching my shirt with the back of my thumb but I was NOT ANCHORING.

Scott McCarron won last week and is doing the same thing.

This is why they shouldnt have changed rule.Splitting hairs over how far its from being grounded.Just let em putt any way they want. The object of the game is to put ball in hole.Aslong as they use a club who cares what it looks like.

Because you have to define a stroke.

I don't think they need to define a stroke, only the strike itself. Scooping, scraping, flicking are already against the rules.

If the gap cannot be see clearly they should be penalized. It should be clearly seen in my opinion.

It's all b.s. McCarron, Langer, and Mayfair are all cheaters in my book.

They're playing by the rules. With Langer you can see more "movement" with the butt of the club when he strokes it compared to when he was anchoring. McCarron isn't anchoring it here.

These guys are also playing competitive rounds with other professional golfers, other caddies, and rules officials, all who have an interest in protecting the field. If anything was suspicious it would be addressed.

Using your approach, croquet style putting would be permitted.

Every "stroke" doesn't necessarily include a "strike".  The stroke must be defined, or a whiff would never count.
