41 members have voted

  1. 1. The official start of the 2016-2017 PGA Tour season was 10/13/2016. When does the season start for you?

    • 10/13/2016 Safeway Open
    • 1/5/2017 Tournament of Champions
    • 2/9/2017 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (Crosby)
    • 4/6/2017 The Masters
    • Something else - please explain
    • I don't follow the PGA tour

I do not like the wrap-around season.  For me the start should be the Tournament of Champions, although I may not watch or pay attention very much until the Crosby in February.

I am not much of a follower of the PGA tour. That said, imo, their season starts when most of the top 20 imerge from hibernation to play against each other. That, or when ever the first FedEx points tourney happens.

With snow on the ground here since late November I'll even watch reruns of golf! The indoor ranges help but it's a long 4-5 months before golf resumes here! I did watch the October start of the 2016-2017 season.

It starts when I happen to come across a live tourney on tv. I don't " follow" it too closely

For me, it has long been the Crosby "clambake" that gets me all horny for golf! Both for playing and watching. Admittedly all the celebrities gives it a bit of the "silly season" feel, but there's just something about Pebble Beach! I'll also try to catch as much as I can of the tournament at Riviera, and the Florida swing.

Usually the weather is still pretty crappy up here, so the early season tourneys get a lot of watching. Once the weather gets right and I can play, I basically dial my viewing back to the majors.

I chose The Masters because that's the first tournament in 2017 that I will anticipate and watch with interest.  I could also have chosen Pebble Beach . . but even though I "recognize" it . .I tend not to watch more than an hour of the singles coverage (and none of the celebrity rounds . .anything worth seeing from those days (and plenty of stuff not worth seeing, lol) will make it on Golf Central).

This is my choice too. Kapalua is stunning and it's fun to watch when there is three feet of snow on the ground.

Or The Masters, whichever comes first. :-D

It's not that I don't watch any of the fall season events, but I have a hard time relating any of them to the 2017 "season". When they play the TofC at Kapalua, then I I know that things are back on track. Besides, I enjoy seeing the shots of Molokai in the distance...it's my favorite island in Hawaii.

For me, the season starts when they starting airing rounds on network channels: NBC, CBS, etc.  Because then I can actually watch it.

    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.

    • Thanks man, sometimes it’s hard to improve bc when I’m not feeling comfortable I don’t like practicing bc I get frustrated. Any advice?
