There used to be a South is harder than North scoring variation when playing Torrey, is that still the case after they have remodeled the courses?

Or should I just stick to a morning v. afternoon v. weather guess when picking my fantasy lineups?

They only remodeled the north this time around and, in general, I think the move made the course easier.  Way fewer bunkers, less severe slopes to the greens, etc ... so the only thing that would make it harder for the pros would be a slight bit of added length.  I suspect, though, that those extra couple of hundred yards doesn't do enough to make it harder and it'll still be a stroke or whatever easier than the south as it has been in the past.

That's a wild guess, though. :)

And we have video proof of Woods hitting a Taylor Made M2 (or whatever) driver.

The greens are much easier at least for me.  The rest of the course played more or less the same difficulty as before for me.  So overall, it was easier.  Those greens were rolling so true with none of the previous course problems of not being able to stop a putt near a hole.

Weiskopf (the course designer for the remodel) did say there are spots for hole placements to make it more difficult for the pros.  And it does have the extra length.

I'm guessing the course will be playing easier for the pros than before and easier than the South as before.

Here's a quote from Weiskopf:

Quote

“The statistic I’ve always designed against is this: There are 25 million golfers in the U.S. as defined by the National Golf Foundation. Ninety-two percent of the 25 million golfers do not break 90. Fifty percent of the 92 percent don’t break 100. Eight-and-a-half percent break 90, but don’t break 80. One half of one percent, assuming they play by the rules, break 80. It’s a very hard game.

“We have to get people around here. It wasn’t its purpose for us, to make it equal [in difficulty] to the south. It’s for those who come out and play and we want them to come back and play.

Almost finished at 11:03, started at 6:40.  About a 5 hour round, probably to be expected playing a pro am.

Do the pro's have to play in the pro am?

Based on the ratings, it looks like they think it'll be harder.  Old back tees were 6915/73.2/130 and the new tips are 7258/75.3/131.

Also, I notice that the new taupe tees have almost the same ratings as the old blacks (73.2/126 vs. 73.2/130) despite being 134 yards shorter.  6781 vs. 6915.  That would lead me to believe that the raters seems to think the course is a teensy bit harder than it used to be.

Another thing I notice from the overheads that I like - fewer trees.  Looks like almost all trees between 10/11 are gone (or replanted I guess) and all of the trees to the left side of 16 are gone so now the view will be unobstructed for that entire hole. :)

Yes, a lot of trees were removed.  I really liked the Torrey Pines along west side of the 16th.  Weiskoph said it was a shame to remove so many trees but they were dying (if I recall correctly he said it was a beetle infestation).

I don't know why but I feel like they were implying he was fully on board right now (I don't expect the Scotty will ever leave the bag again, though).

Over-Under for Tiger today is 71.5: which are you taking?

I'm tempted to take the under. And since I probably won't post again before he starts play, that's probably where I'll have to end up.

He plays these courses well, but at the same time, he's just returning to competition. So… I'm conflicted.

I will take the under.  I think he will shoot in the 60's today.

I'd probably take the under on the first day, depending on the weather.  My guess is that, like in the Bahamas, he'll start strong, and experience a few moments of fatigue or lack of concentration as the week goes along, and he gets himself into competition shape.  My guess is that Day 1 is the most likely day for him to go low.

I think he'll play well today, but that said I think he'll have enough rust and a few bad holes that he ends up over.

Given Tag's history at TP, he should do well. I'll take the under.

If for nothing more than to generate hype, an opening round 68 would be fun....

    • Day 549, May 4, 2024 After lessons and working with Natalie, hit some balls for awhile. Just backswing stuff. Forgot about the slightly shorter stuff, though I'm sure it was as they were only about 75% speed with brief pauses.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
