I was reading a recent golf magazine.  They had an LPGA player (Belen Mozo) featured in an article about hitting the driver.  There was a tag line that said, "She says her average drive is 265 yards."  The wording intrigued me, like the magazine wasn't exactly on board with her statement.  I looked up her 2016 average driving distance - 247 yards.

So it looks like even female golfers feel the need to inflate their distances.  ;-)

BTW, she would kick my butt around the course and frankly, I would love to average 247 yards off the tee,

Perhaps that average includes using a club other than the driver? Like a 3-wood?

Also perhaps she really does have an average of 265 when she goes 100% but in tournaments dials it back for better accuracy. It's just a little under 2 clubs.

If I could average 247 off the tee, I'd probably drop my hdcp 2, maybe 3 strokes.

My thoughts as well.  I think Annika averaged 250-270 throughout her career, but from what I have read before she was capable of hitting driver a bit farther than that.

I do of course appreciate the humor though haha

If I remember right, "official" driving distance is measured on only a couple of holes each week.  She may have enough data from practice rounds that her 265 estimate is more accurate than the tournament driving stat.

Many of us has no trouble hitting it a long way, but the problem is we need an axe to retrieve the ball sometimes. I can lose to people that hit it 200 if my shot cone is bad enough.

I don't for sure know how to account for the apparent difference in the data and what was stated.  But language being what it is I do know there is a difference between your average drive and you average length of a drive hit with a driver.  I would suspect the above statement has it correct.

My thought as well @DaveP043.  I think they set it up so they should be hitting driver but it isn't always the case.  I also don't see any reason to doubt her 265 estimate.  It might be fluffed by a few yards but I'm confident she's more than capable of hitting it at least that far.

Fairways and Greens.

I believe that many golfers (including myself) answer the question regarding their average drive are referring to their median length drive and not a pure average.

I'd probably add something like 2 to 3 strokes. :-D

I was almost going to respond with something like this, but he did say if "I" could average 247. So, with his approach/short game, maybe?

I wondered about this?

It seems like a pro player wouldn't do anything to compromise their swing. I can see them really going for it and getting a lot more distance than their average, but I wonder if they would ever do that?

This makes the most sense.

I wonder if they actually want maximum roll on those fairways? Seems like you could easily find trouble when the ball runs away especially on a tour course?

In the winter, I drive about what I average in GG because I don't actually record (GG) that many rounds in So. Cal in the summer. When I do, there is a significant amount of roll.

I had a drive roll about 60-80 yards or more driving pin high on a par 4 on the hard pan. It was like cement. Of course, my ball ended up in the cement hard pan behind a tree and I lost a stroke from chipping distance versus being on the fairway a wedge away?

Seems like on courses like those you don't want the ball to run away?

Ive gone to see the ladies play at a couple of times in Jersey. I would say between 240-and 250 with the lumber is about right. Which is still further than most of you hit it.. :-$ The longer players like Lexi Thompson probably get it out there in the 280 range. Impressive.

Not to pick on Belen, but her current LPGA average stands at about 245 yards for 2017. As I said before, she would kick my old butt around the block but she would only out drive me by 25 yards, not 45.;-)

The golden rule: 98 percent of people inflate(either by ignorance or on purpose).

1 percent get it right

1 percent under rate it because of some reason( hustling, embarrassed, anxiety, etc)
