I just saw this thread, and will try it next week, probably with foot powder. I'm betting toward the hosel strike for me.

Also, this may not apply here, but on another web forum I had no problem posting pics once I set my camera to VGA. My camera is nothing special, a Nikon Coolpix L620 that will take 5 megapixel pictures. But, you can reset it to a lot of different levels, including VGA. Thus, you don't have to resize files.

Now all I have to do is hit some balls, take some pics, and figure out how to post them here. I'm guessing I use the "Insert other media" button?

Download the picture to your computer and you can select "choose files"..  The forum will search your computer for the picture and upload it here.   Easy peasy...   There are programs that will minimize the size of the picture for easier uploading.   I have a free one called FileMinimizer Pictures 3.0.

I'd stick with the marker method. Foot powder isn't as good for multiple-strike impacts.

OK. That's kind of what I do on the other forum. The pic has been downloaded to my computer using Nikon software that came with the camera on a CD/ROM. It downloads the pics as thumbnails and organizes them into folders so I can find them easily, and upload a folder or an individual pic.

Again, OK. But I'll need a new Sharpie. All mine are old and a little dry! They're not all that "juicy" any more!

Here is mine. Not much warm up. The first one was the high one near to toe. The rest (5 total) were near the middle.

Six swings with my 4I after a little loosening up. Didn't catch a single one clean. Since when do I miss high on the face? I'll just chalk this up to rust.

OK, I'll be doing this tomorrow. It's going to be cold, low 30's, so a great day to visit the golf dome. Plus, I feel the need for a warming glass of fine red wine and a plate of Italian greens at the local eatery!

I bought a fresh Sharpie today, and visited my profile page where I figured out how to download pics. The proof is my fabulous new avatar, which shows a wonderful group of "Chicken of the Woods" mushrooms I found on a fallen log last year! See you tomorrow!

Here are my 5 ball marks from a short session in the net following on from 18 holes today. Pleased with the centering of the pattern, had one which I caught fairly thin.

Well this is my 5 from today. First one was the best last one wasn't horrible. Middle three well you can see for yourself. I've had a problem so far this year hitting everything out of the toe with all my clubs. These results seem to matchup with what I'm feeling.

OK. here's my 5 from today. Overall I'd have to I'm very pleased with how it turned out. Many thanks, Erik, for this idea.

DSCN0256.JPG.e8e3cf259ee2ee72413e5038356900a0.JPG

The mark toward the heel was my very first of the 5. It produced a hook that started left and went further left. I've fought the tendency to hit toward the heel for more years than I care to recount, so, when I saw where the mark was I decided to "cheat". My Uncle, a country club pro before WWII, told me many years ago that he lined up with the ball more toward the toe because his tendency was to swing out at the ball.

I did that for the last 4 swings and the ball took off like a rocket and dead straight! I'm thinking this is an idea that, for me, deserves further investigation.

Didnt even know i was low on foot powder. Had only enough for 2 balls. My strikes seem a lot lower than many here. How should I fix that? How high should the mark be on my iron face? I was hitting off a mat incase that means anything.

or have a sharpie that is not dried out...meanwhile after applying several coats, I was able to squeeze out five... six iron. side note: this particular club is literally tearing up my balls, after over aggressive sharpening a week or so ago. Hopefully will dull up a bit.

There are a lot of variables in this. Exact placement each swing is essential, if you are off by even a 1/16th it will show markedly difference. Suggestion is to use logo on top that has a line that you can place perpendicular to spot on the ball, and have spot just touching the deck.

Beau Hossler's instructor teaches at my club so he's there a couple times every month. I was hitting balls next to him and was checking out his clubs. For this thread I thought it'd be interesting to get a couple pics to see where a PGA Tour player hits it on the face. No surprise he hits most of his shots in the center but tends to miss it more towards the toe.

I find it also affects position if you use a tee. I like to hit off the grass when I practice and check impact position as using a tee will usually give higher contact position. I find I have to really focus on setting up to the ball more toward the heel to avoid toe shots but not sure why. The wear pattern on my clubs shows that I hit between center and toe on irons, hybrid and 3w. Driver is a much better as far as hitting in center. I did a few sessions with impact tape after I changed irons as everything was being hit out toward the toe. I occasionally use foot powder at the range if I feel it gets away from me. I find it a good practice aid.

No sharpie with me so I had to go with the impact tape in my bag ....  first ball was a very nervy thin job,  with two fairly flush and another two just inside center

So honestly looking for help, what would the hits I posted above say of my hits? That my club is extending too early so Im hitting the bottom instead of higher up?

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
