FWIW, I haven't ever found a problem following golf and football at the same time.

 Multitasking.... :-D

I have. Every year I say I'm going to pay attention to the Fed Ex Cup Playoffs, but once football starts, I find myself not watching much golf (especially when the Bucs are good...and they're supposed to be this year). Don't get me wrong....I'll tune in here and there and check to see what's going on, but it's nowhere near with the same interest as I have in the months of April, May and June.

Six letters in each of the first and last names of the 2017 major winners.

Hmmmm, seems like the work of the Illuminati!

@nevets88 No surprise there really. The Masters thread got 980 replies. This is reply #186 and it's the day after. Even golfers passionate enough about the game to talk about it on a forum didn't give a shit.

So, interesting story - sort of. I went to the 2012 US Amateur, which was in Denver. I went to the first day of matches. I didn't have anybody I really knew or wanted to follow, so I just followed a match that went off the first tee. It was Justin Thomas playing against a guy from North Carolina. I ended up following that match the whole way. It went 17 holes and JT won it.

Because it was an US Amateur, I was following the match down the fairway. And JT's family was walking with. I was wearing a Michigan fan, and Alabama and Michigan were playing that year in football. His family actually talked to me a couple of times, and I distinctly remember talking to his grandfather a decent amount. They were super nice. I was basically the only non family member following the match, so they were happy to talk to me. They even gave me a pass for the Michigan hat, haha.

Had no idea at the time that JT would be a major winner. Pretty cool to think that I lucked into following him that.

By the way, if you get a chance, go to the US Amateur if it's near you. You can literally walk right along side the players in the fairway. It was really cool, and looking back on that experience, I'm really glad I did it. Even though I was basically just a random guy following a random match. Only a couple of players had much of a crowd. I remember that the Spieth match had a fairly large crowd, but even then it was probably only 50 people.

Pretty ugly ratings...although the crows were large and raucous (in a good way) in Charlotte this weekend.

I wonder how long the huge payouts and weekly tournaments can sustain itself on tour in a post Tiger world.  I think ultimately there will need to be fewer tournaments and smaller purses, but I'm guessing the tour won't make a change until absolutely forced to.

I've been drinking every time someone on the broadcast says that JT is Spieth's good friend. I've been watching for 30 minute and I'm already completed wasted.

It's a strong field and I enjoy watching those near on the leaderboard, the broadcast feels so much like a regular event. If the coverage were more BBC like, I would have watched live.

It will be interesting to see how the ratings will be when the tournament moves to May in 2019. I wonder if competing with the NFL Preseason hurts them.

I'm sure they can't get there fast enough at this point. But how much it will help, I wonder that as well. It'll probably improve some % but the ratings will probably still be hurting to some extent. The US Open was way down this year, as we all know, and that's a pretty easy ratings grab with NBA/NHL over, no major NFL news, and MLB still in early June. Probably in the first year though they should in theory see a nice ratings boost just from the novelty of it being in May.

Yea, as others have mentioned, it's probably because of all the commercials with the PGA. Smart to not watch it live.

I don't think things will contract too much, but the growth will slow or stop, I suspect. The # of Tour events will likely contract, but I don't suspect purses will.

Remember, too, FedEx felt that the FedExCup was successful enough that they were able to renew for many, many years. I don't know that golf is in as bad a position as many people think.

Yep I think you're probably right. I don't think golf is in a bad position, I just think the tour should continue to make some adjustments (schedule tweaks, shortening season, etc.) to keep from getting over its skis too much.

I think it faces the same issues as the rest of the sports that rely on national TV deals. I don't really know how that'll work its way out though.
