Folks don't usually say they "faded the ball into an unplayable/out of bounds" situation very often.

Same with a draw. You don't hear "I hit a draw into an unplayable/out of bounds" situation very often.

Fades, and draws are usually decent, controlled shots, Slices, and hooks, not so muchh.

A hook, or a slice is alot like porn. You know it, when you see (hit) it. ....lol

When it goes 10 yards of the line? 20? 30?

The simple answer is that a fade/draw is controlled by the player; an intentional, controlled slight curve.

A slice/hook is not controlled by the player, it's a wild, huge curve compared to a fade/draw.

I guess if it curves so hard that it doesn't travel any more than maybe 80% of intended distance in the direction of the target then prolly a hook/slice. For eg. a hook drive for me goes 170-180y versus a normal 230-235.

A fade or draw is a good shot.

Not always.

Aim for a draw, hit a fade. Water.

To me it's about how much the ball turns. I can miss left with a pull-draw that I wouldn't call a hook, or right with a push-fade I wouldn't call a slice. I'm really particular about how I describe my ballflight, though.

To me there is a big conceptual difference. If the ball starts RIGHT of target and then RETURNS to target it's a draw. If the fall starts at target and curves to the left of target it's a hook even if it was only a few yards. Same concept for a fade and slice.

Great post! A fade becomes a slice, and a draw becomes a hook, when they go too far! And get you into trouble!

I've seen guys play some pretty bizarre shot shapes back into playability, They are nowhere near straight, but they have learned to manage their games. Kind of like Bubba Watson!

A person who asks when a fade becomes a slice and a draw becomes a hook is a person who wants to think their slices are fades and their hooks are draws.

If you can hit  a fade or a draw you sure as hell know when they're hooks and slices :-)

That is a huge insult to Bubba Watson. He moves it both ways at will. He is hardly "managing his game" when he is on form.

So what do you call a fade that misses left or a draw that misses right?

Or a low draw that starts way right and turns hard left and finishes on target? It's only a hook if it missed left?

This thread, interestingly enough, illustrates the problem we have when discussing golf. The terms aren't clearly defined and mean different things to different people.

BTW you can totally hit a controlled slice and a controlled hook.
