Butch Harmon makes a Bad Tweet about Nick Watney and then Quits Twitter

Nick Watney shot rounds of 82-77 at the Memorial Tournament and his swing coach Butch Harmon took notice.

This didn’t go over well with Harmon’s followers and he tried to backtrack:

“Or some physical problems he can’t shoot that high”

“Don’t mean to upset all the Watney fans was just thinking out (loud) .Nick is like a son to me I love him .He will be fine by the US Open .”

Golfweek’s Alex Miceli tracked down Watney leaving the exercise facility and showed him the tweet.

“Interesting,” Watney said. “No comment.”

Harmon clearly made a mistake, but we all say dumb things we later regret. He could have just said, “Something must be wrong,” but when you go down the “personal problems” route, the implications of the comment turn it into a “controversy.”

Just a poor choice of words. Personal problems could mean anything. That he quit twitter makes it appear worse than it probably is. I don't use twitter and the like but what I've seen makes it look like people just hang out looking for people to trade jibes with.

I blame all my bad play on other people's personal problems...

Don't blame BH  for signing off of Twitter. Once something is tweeted it's out there. He doesn't need the second-guessing & criticism from those who take exception of what he sent, most likely, on a whim.

I'm not trying to defend him, just saying I don't blame him for signing off, esp after the first reply he got about it possibly being NW's "shitty coach." He doesn't need that. Who does?

Twitter is a social medium I don't use.  In order to get followers you need to have something to say that other people want to see, which usually translates to controversial tweets or self shot pictures of half naked stars.  Harmon was likely trying to gain some attention and new followers for his account and thought the tweet was harmless but might get some people talking, it backfired.

Twitter is stupid. The only ones that are mildly interesting are the "controversial" ones - the vast majority are pointless. Good on bh for signing off.

You've heard about the wrong people. I suggest:

Was hoping to find half-naked photos of TST staff... Left disappointed. a2_wink.gif

I saw the tweet, did not really think twice about it. Thought the controversy was a bit overblown. Should he have said it? Of course not, oh well. Silly for him to "hang it up" over that.

What the hell is Butch Harmon doing on twitter in the first place? He's way too old for that crap.

Social media crap is for the young kids.

The times of the tweets don't make sense. He made the reference to Watney at 1:08 but said he was leaving at 12:46. Weird.

Twitter normalizes based on time zones I believe. If the two screenshots were taken by different people (i.e. the first one by mvmac on the west coast and the other by someone at WUP on the east coast, where he quoted the article from), it would look messed up.

Twitter just another way for fools to prove themselves.....Butch did a nice job

Alex Miceli sticking his nose in again, I see.

How does that clown even have a job?

Yeah that's right regarding the times.  I used Stephanie Wei's screenshot, I think she's on the West Coast

I almost thought it was a senior moment or something, don't think it warrants leaving Twitter.  But Butch doesn't exactly need more promotion so I get how he's rather not have to deal with haters on Twitter

From what I read, Watney is having marital problems. Someone suggested that Butch wanted to make sure that people knew it wasn't his coaching that was the problem.
