Which was Worse

  1. 1. Which was worse, Tiger's personal moral failings of being involved with dozens of women who were not his wife or Phil's dalliance with the Saudis while stabbing the tour in the back?

Tiger's scandal or Phil's.  Explain your choice.

Phil by a landslide. Many, many tour players have had discretions and some we revere like Tom Watson and Arnie. But in those cases, they did nothing to damage the sport or insult the PGA Tour or try to destroy the PGA Tour with unrivaled greed.

Worse to the universe or to professional golf? To American professional golf, Phil did more harm. To the world, I think Tiger did more harm.

Tiger hurt and scarred people and sent their lives on unimaginable trajectories. What about the Perkins waitress who actually thought Tiger was going to leave his wife for her? What about his children and former wife?

Does the PGA tour own professional golf?

Phil seems like is a major doofus. Why would you insult scarry MFs by proclaiming these sentiments to the world? I would be afraid to travel to certain parts of the world and be afraid for my family after saying things like that.

To the world? The dude f***ed some women.

For all we know, Elin knew about it. And for all we know, Phil did the very same thing. There have been rumors about children he's fathered, about he and Amy being swingers, about Michael Jordan… etc.

And here's the deal with that sort of stuff: I don't really care. That's their personal lives.

This is golf. And Phil f***ed up in a golf sense, royally. He's a schmuck. His "everyman" thing is as phony as a $3 bill.

Did you hear the bit about how he filmed the memorial video for Tim Rosaforte… by holding the PGA Championship trophy in his lap the entire time? Who f***ing does that in a memorial video?

P.S. "Royally" wasn't intended as a pun, but it could be.

I’m no big Tiger fan, nor a hater.  His personal transgressions are, personal.  I’ll leave that for he and his family.

Phil on the other hand… let’s just say I’ve become much less of a fan over the past while.  He’s publicly lashing out at the PGA (that in part made him).  And at the rules committees (which I believe do a good job creating a fair competition), while also getting in hot water for insider trading… guess he doesn’t like rules in general.

Phil by a mile.  One thing that doesn’t get mentioned is that trying to break off top talent, hence revenue, ratings and interest away from the pga tour hurts not only the Tour but everything in that eco system.  While I think there are better ways to get the tour to bend on some things, although I have no interest in paying millionaires like Hoffman even more money, Norman and Mickelson are beyond the pale.

They both don’t care about anyone other than themselves.   And they aren’t honest enough to say “we are doing it strictly for the cash”.  One thing that comes to mind is that if you have so much money, why not start with young, unrecognized talent and start a brand new entity?   No, they want to suck the big draws from the organization that gave them their success and claim they are top dog.

For me, the stink on both of them won’t come off for a long time.

Tiger failed on a personal way, but at least he always managed to represent golf as a sport and the Tour as an organization in a good light, and when he couldn't do it, it would stay away from microphones.

Phil royally screwed the pooch, the Tour and everything else, for all to see and yacked about it to a reporter, like he had done a good thing. Face palm.

Phil.  By an order of magnitude.  Tiger's off-the-course transgressions are found in all of professional sports, and go way back.  And in no way are they right.  But Phil was involved in trying to undermine the PGA Tour, and causing financial anarchy.

Because it's a conversation topic.

You can find them to be equally bad.

Phil, AINEC.

I liked Phil pretty much since I got into golf and although Tiger certainly diminished his standing with some because of his transgressions, ultimately that's related to what ppl wanted or expected him to be.  Between the insider trading and this, Phil's really shown himself to be only concerned with his bottom line and anything that maximizes that is excusable to him.  I was happy to see Rory be as direct with his comments as he was because Phil should be called out for this.

Both letdown the public and lost sponsors because of it. But it seems like Phil’s situation was worse. For years he presented himself as a fan-friendly successor to Arnold Palmer. Imagine Arnold ever making such cynical statements about the Saudi deal. “I know they are murderers, but I don’t care! I just want money and leverage on my home tour.”

Phil had already engaged in some insider trading years earlier and got away with it. But the Saudi thing was a few too many steps over the line. Crazy as hell that this happened pretty soon after Phil’s amazing victory against Father Time at the 2021 PGA Championship. Pretty stunning turn of events.

    • A 5400 yd course is not that short for gents driving it 160 yards considering the approach shot lengths they are going to be faced with on Par 4s.  Also, for the course you are referring to I estimate the Par 4s have to average longer than 260 yds, because the Par 5s are 800 yds or so, and if there are four Par 3s averaging 130 the total is 1320 yds.  This leaves 4080 yds remaining for 12 Par 4s.  That is an average of 340 per hole. Anyway, if there are super seniors driving it only 160ish and breaking 80 consistently, they must be elite/exceptional in other aspects of their games.  I play a lot of golf with 65-75 yr old seniors on a 5400 yd course.  They all drive it 180-200 or so, but many are slicers and poor iron players.  None can break 80. I am 66 and drive it 200 yds.  My average score is 76.  On that course my average approach shot on Par 4s is 125 yds.  The ten Par 4s average 313 yds.  By that comparison the 160 yd driver of the ball would have 165 left when attempting GIR on those holes.
    • I don't think you can snag lpga.golf without the actual LPGA having a reasonable claim to it. You can find a ton of articles of things like this, but basically: 5 Domain Name Battles of the Early Web At the dawn of the world wide web, early adopters were scooping up domain names like crazy. Which led to quite a few battles over everything from MTV.com You could buy it, though, and hope the LPGA will give you a thousand bucks for it, or tickets to an event, or something like that. It'd certainly be cheaper than suing you to get it back, even though they'd likely win. As for whether women and golfers can learn that ".golf" is a valid domain, I think that's up to you knowing your audience. My daughter has natalie.golf and I have erik.golf.
