A shame for sure. For those that say it was dumb, maybe not. Golf is an athletic sport and Rory's quickness and overall athletic ability helps him to be great. You don't become a good athlete by watching soccer on TV. Sure, maybe he could be engaging in a different form of cross training that is more controlled given that he is in the middle of the major season but I always found that playing sports like basketball and soccer were great for getting your mind off of things (and hard to replicate in a controlled environment).

Dumb by Rory. Jordan Spieth's path to winning the grand slam got a bit easier.

Why dumb? He's not allowed to do anything but play golf? He's not allowed to have friends and do activities with them? It's unfortunate, but it happens.

Sad this happened to Rory, especially right before The Open.  I hope he makes it back in time.
Abu3baid - Yeah, if news comes out that he is getting blood spinning done with the witch doctor he will automatically go on my list of suspected PED users for sure.. But his name hasn't come up yet so it's a moot point..

A shame for sure. Play soccer all you want just not right before a major? Seems like a no duh moment to me.

I'd rather they have lives and this stuff happens occasionally - good for him for having balance

Freak injuries happen. He's an athlete who likes to do athletic things. I don't think he was crazy for doing what he did, even considering the timing. Just bad luck.

Yes, quite a few pro contracts have restrictions in them. A friend was telling me his son's high school baseball team limits what they can do during the season. OTOH, I once practiced with a French professional basket ball team who ended their practice with a soccer scrimmage.

Jordan's Gram Slam probability probably went up a couple percentage points this morning.

Yeah, but only by the same amount that his odds went down after Tigers tidy final round yesterday. ;)

I agree. Sergio Garcia is part owner of a minor league football team and practices w/them I think. Matt Kuchar plays tennis. Some players ski or go snowboarding. Doesn't Fowler ride motocross? Villegas and Geoff Ogilvy cycle - cycling (more so in the US) is probably the most dangerous compared to the previous sports, ask David Feherty.

Steve Kerr encouraged his team to play golf during the playoffs.

MJ's contract rather famously had the opposite.

Sucks that he hurt his ankle, but I'm glad that he does things outside of golf. That's single-minded obsessiveness that a Tiger or Hogan has/had doesn't really lend itself to a happy and full life I don't think.

I don't know much about Hogan's private life, but Tiger was known to do all sorts of military exercises, so it's like like golf or lifting were the only athletic things he did. I agree that it's good for him to do other activities, though. I find it kind of odd that other people feel he's just supposed to spend the rest of his playing years doing nothing but golf. That'd be like the rest of us spending all of our free time developing our work skills.

I am not a Medical Doctor (thought I should do some truth in advertising) but I have had some experience with "sprains and ruptured tendons". Both from personal experience and close friends and family.  Broken bones probably heal quicker and better.  Ruptured tendons take awhile to heal.  So even if they are minor tendons and you won't do yourself damage by continuing activity it very likely will be painful for some time to come and more prone to re-injury.  That's not a medical opinion but that they way I have experienced it and seen it go with others I have known.

For me Tiger's military stuff all falls under that same single-mindedness. I don't see it as something he actually uses as like a hobby; like, Rory isn't using soccer to train for golf.

I'm not sure how doing something like parachuting out of military aircrafts is in any way training for golf. I think you misinterpreted my use of the word "exercise."

I'm not a doctor either but I've rolled my share of ankles and I'll bet he ends up just taping it up and he plays in the Open. He's not going to miss that, he'd have to wait 5 more years until it comes back. He's got ten days to get ready. It's not like he doesn't already know the course.

Plus it's not like he's a "Johnny Miller left ankle roller" anyway.

I think folks will be surprised that 1) he plays and 2) plays pretty well. It's amazing how stable a taped ankle feels when, without taping, it feels pretty wobbly.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
