If PGA dumps Trump.

Next year he has a tournament at LA that has a payout the is twice the FEDEX cup winnings on his own. Players boycott or go for the dough?

Oh, you can be almost certain there would be some backlash if they still held the tournament there. Protests, petitions, etc..

People might even resort to sneaking over or under the gate without paying at the PGA events.  Wouldn't that be a hoot.  It wouldn't fly with them for some odd reason.

You are talking about a minor golf event that most outside of the sport aren't even aware of. The event takes place in October and as long as DT doesn't drop any other pearls of wisdom, this comment will fade from memory. To put it in context, the story warranted all of 1.5 inches at the bottom of a briefs column in the fabled Dayton Daily News.

Maybe its a case of follow the leader. Maybe its better safe than sorry. It just seems a bit knee-jerk to me.

It would depend on how long he keeps talking like he is. How large or small the event is wouldn't really matter once someone started organizing against it. If he does fade away before then, well, you probably would be correct that it would pass with little or no notice taken. The question is, would that be worth the risk for the PGA? Given the volatile nature of social media and how quickly they organize against anything deemed "wrong" I don't think they really thought it was even worth the remote chance of a blow up.

I guess, as they say, Trump has burned his boats and now he has to run for president seriously. God help us.

I don't blame the PGA for not wanting to be involved in politics though. I would think it was great if all sports made that a thing, on both sides.

Its interesting, in another thread there's a discussion of holes played poorly after a match is determined  (i.e. the last three holes after a match goes up 4 with 3 to play), and whether its intentional sandbagging or simply an unintentional loss of focus.  I don't think we'll ever know whether this is a stand on principle by the PGA, choosing not to be associated with a man who appears to be racist, or a more cowardly choice to avoid the PR fall-out from choosing to remain associated with him.

I voted maybe, but could have voted no.

There are things I feel differently about from Trump, and there are things I won't say in polite conversation. There may be some things I agree with.  In similar discussions, I have said I have no problem with manners, but I hate PC bullcrap. Trump is a national political figure, and we need to know what he believes regardless of whether we agree or disagree. The PC crap is over the line in America, threatening free speech.  Politicians should not hindered from saying what they think, even if it is inflammatory. The avenue for correction is the ballot box, not censorship.

At the same time, political figures, especially ones with national ambitions, have some responsibilty to withdraw from certain areas of public life when campaigning. Fred Thompson for instance, was either by choice or regulation, not on "Law and Order" when he was actively running for POTUS. Where practical, Trump should probably withdraw at least in name until the election is over. After that, the market will decide if left unhindered. The Womens British Open is at Turnberry in 3 weeks, that would not be practical to change. While Trump would certainly say that he OWNs the BLue Monster and Turnberry, many would say those particular properties are bigger than him, and he is the current caretaker. Playing the Doral and British Open at those courses is bigger than anything the Donald might say.

I'm not surprised, you tend to be pretty informed. I'll bet you're in the minority, though most probably wouldn't admit it.

Neither of us are fans of Trump, but did you actually find anything racist in his statements?

Of course, those that only listen to the media will believe that he said that everyone of Mexican heritage was a drug-running rapist, when of course, he said no such thing.

I did not view them as racist, just outlandish and not based in fact.

Trump spins a few examples of bad behavior and says this is the norm. It's manipulation of people's fears and prejudices.

And he tends to run so close to the line between black and white with such grandiose statements  that it's easy for the media/opponents to spin them.

Trump is his own worst enemy.

This appears to be the text of what he actually said that got him in trouble:

"Thank you. It's true, and these are the best and the finest. When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're not sending you. They're not sending you. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."

@David in FL is correct in the sense that he didn't call all people of Mexican heritage criminals. What he did is call most Mexican immigrants criminals.

That's the how things play out these days. It's not necessary to actually say something outright racist/bigoted as long as it can be perceived as such. Now, what he said is pretty easy to be offended by and wouldn't take much to get people behind a push to make the PGA disassociate from him. However, I am pretty tired of constantly seeing public apologies from people for things that they really shouldn't be apologizing for because what they said was/could be thought to be offensive.

OT, folks.   There is another thread in The Grill forum to talk about DT's candidacy and qualification.   This threads is about Golf & Trump.

As for me, I wimped out and voted for the 3rd option.   One part of me said that the golf world should not dump DT b/c of his "Mexican" stance.  Golf can use more supporters given the current state.

This is getting ridiculous. Companies pulling out of things because of perceived racism? Those companies pulling out of things because of events like this should be ashamed of themselves.

I thought there was a thing called free speech. I hope that Mr. Trump sticks to his guns on this. I do not think that Mr. Trump is a racist, he spoke a truth that our society does not want to hear and wants to just sweep under the rug.

Political correctness is going to kill us all. I support Donald's comments and wish that he remain in the Presidential race, it is about time that there is a candidate who is not a professional politician, is beholden to no one, including lobbyists, reporters or anybody that doesn't owe any "favors" to. Unfortunately, I think that that is the only way that some things can be fixed in the country and government; we need a person who probably doesn't care about re-election and to hell with the polls, someone who will do what has to be done.

Not really.   They are afraid of business impact from potential customers (Hispanic and others offended by DT's "free speech").   Golf business is no different.

The freedom of speech clause does not mean you can call your bosses wife a rancid prostitute, then cry foul when you get canned.

Pretty damn funny when DT got called out by David Lettermen for having his ties made in China. I don't think DT has done any serious that would cause any real problems for the PGA. It's all just PC nonsense to me and an over exaggeration of what he ignorantly tried to convey. Rori Sabbatini is a bigger ass than DT to me and brings nothing positive to the tour.

Everybody knows that’s true. And it’s happening all the time. So, why, when I mention, all of a sudden I’m a racist. I’m not a racist. I don’t have a racist bone in my body.” “What can be simpler or more accurately stated? The Mexican Government is forcing their most unwanted people into the United States. They are, in many cases, criminals, drug dealers, rapists, etc.” The data and math prove conclusively that what he said abive about illegal immigrants is completely incorrect. As a population, the illegal immigrant crime rate is actually much lower than native born US citizens, and majority of those illegals that are arrested are being taken in for immigration reasons. It wasn't racism, but it was certainly race baiting. Many right wing voters that are against immigration reform seem to believe that what trump said about illegals and crime is true, like there is an epidemic of illegals committing crime. Obviously it is too easy for politicians to be attacked for poorly worded ideas in the 24 hour media era, but Trump doubling down on something so inaccurate and dangerous is cause for the PGA and others to distance themselves. Politicians are supposed to limit their business interests anyway while in office, which is why he isn't serious about becoming president. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/wp/2015/07/08/donald-trumps-false-comments-connecting-mexican-immigrants-and-crime/

I am curious if a GOLFER is required to bring something positive to the tour other than his game ? What are the things he has done wrong ? I am curious because I have been following the game for a long time, not so much the players personalities. I only remember a spiff with Tiger about 10 years ago that made news for a couple weeks, outside of that I have never heard anything.

Trump is just getting old. Written here many times about his EGO, age is making him talk to much and opinionated, which is great if they were opinions that helped everyone and not just his cronies. We all know, if he became president, nothing would change. If a devout Democrat can't get the top money earners to pay a measly 1/2% more in tax. Nothing correct for ALL Americans is going to change. Consider pre Reagan years the top paid 63% tax and now it is 30% for all. At this rate, it is a race to the top and those 25K that end at the top will control everything. Most likely everyone on this boards ancestors. But hey, it isn't a problem for anyone right now so why worry, we will all be dead and gone and who cares about their grandchildren once they are gone. That isn't how I feel, but how I see most everyone move forward, they won't state such, but the truth is in their actions which is to conform and "shake head YES"

Lately, there've been a lot of issues where people get outraged. Global Warming, racism, you name it. While I think passion is generally good, I think I'm seeing something different take over in these "national conversations."
  1. Complete absence of any doubt in their position
  2. Darn-near intolerance of the opposing opinion (high doses of mockery)
  3. A desire to punish those that don’t agree
Usually when I see these characteristics, I think of a mob-mentality or group-think. Reasoned, impassioned, convincing logic is not what I'm talking about.  My hope is that others will be suspicious of people who exhibit these characteristics. There's probably a flaw in their position, so they need to rely on bullying. In this debate (and others), keep your eye open for this tactic, and be suspicious. Be skeptical. Search out truth on your own. My guess is that the truth likely lies elsewhere, but that's for us each to judge.

You've described the three main requirements to be a politician. Add: 4. Defend your position until popular opinion changes then deny you had that position. 5. Use vague language so you can spin your response tactically. Trump will fail as a political candidate not because of the first three, but because he'll never do 4 and he is not smart enough to do 5. As for outrage, passion is good as you say. Outrage is cultivated by candidates and media. They want outrage. But outrage stunts critical thinking, logic and the ability to come up with solutions. So even though they get elected using outrage, they have no effectiveness once in office because they can't turn it off.

Good point and I understand. But if a tournament was being played at a Trump course, I couldn't care less. Rory hitting divots at Jordan on the practice tee and his ranting at fellow players is annoying. No, players aren't required to bring anything positive, but it's something else when they supply mostly negative stuff.

Wow....you really did a great job of getting your politics into the golf conversation.  Trump might be old, wealthy and outspoken, but he does love American and has earned his money instead of expecting someone else to give them their earnings.  I'm certainly not wealthy, but I do understand that taking money away from the rich means that there will be less jobs and less money for the needy poor.  I hope you noticed that I wrote needy poor!  Two things -- If the present leadership in America was interested in creating more jobs instead of creating socialism, and those sitting on their butts waiting for a free handout always complaining about those that produce, then more people could afford to play golf.

Oh, my answer.  I see what Trump has done for golf.  Please let me know what you've done.  Thanks!
