See the questions above.

For clarification, A is good, F is terrible, and you're to rate your game compared to golfers of the SAME handicap. So if you rate yourself as all "A"s or all "F"s then you're probably not the handicap you say you are. :-)

I gave full swing a "C", short game a "C", and putting a "D".

This is partly based on Game Golf strokes-gained data, partly on my perception. My truly terrible rounds (100+) are usually differentiated from my better rounds (90-95) by horrific putting. The full swing and short game, while awful, seem more consistent.

I guess full swing could be a C+, since GG has me equivalent to a 15-handicap off the tee and on approach shots (I am a 23.3 right now).

I gave my full swing a B. I'm about 6 strokes gained better than other 5 handicaps according to game golf.

I gave my short game and putting a D. I'm about 3-4 strokes worse with my putting and short game each compared to other 5 handicaps.

B on full swing. This is trending upward

B on short game. Trending upward quickly

D on putting. Nowhere to go but up.

Closest to me without being higher is 15, so vs a 15 I'm A C B over the last 5 rounds since I've implemented my current swing thought. GG shows me a -3.28 from the tee, +1.25 short game, and -.21 putting. As a matter of fact, the only thing I'm not better showing better than 15 is in the short game. Probably a bit telling and I should take a bit of time to work on my 30-70 yard shots and chipping a bit. Honestly, I'm pretty dang happy with those numbers considering that even if I compare myself to a 10 I'd still rate myself pretty close to the same.

I voted full swing = D

Short Game = C

Putting  = B

I've always been good at chipping and putting.  Not awesome or anything - but good enough that it's been nothing to worry about vs my full swing.

Another difference between me and other golfers of my handicap (or roughly average score, since I don't have a handicap) is that I'm freaky consistent and always have been.  When I was a triple bogey golfer, I cared just about all triple bogeys made all the same way - reach the green in +3 GIR and then 2 putt.  When I was a double bogey golfer it was the same - GIR in +2 and then 2 putt.  Then it was GIR in +1 and 2 putt.  Now it's GIR or GIR +1 and 2 putt.  I rarely chip it close - but I rarely chip it outside of a 2-putt.  I rarely make a putt outside 6 feet but I rarely miss one inside 4 feet.

It's either a grand social experiment using human subjects that will be posted in the next issue of the Journal of American Science despite obvious ethics violations and improper human testing...

...or it's just a neat topic designed to start a conversation about golf and about peoples' perception of their own games.

I'm guessing it's A.  I'm going to get out my tin-foil hat.

It does reek of a social experiment... Seems impossible to quantify this. For every bad short game guy, there is a good putter or some other way they make it up to have the cap they have.

Just off the top of my head, I went with C, A, and A. My game "IS" my short game. Plus, if it were an important match against someone equal to my hdcp, I think I have the patience to prevail over 18 holes.

Uhhh, yeah! There are a lot of ways to score in golf! That's what keeps it interesting. And the way people's minds work is fascinating.

As for me, I gave myself an A in the full swing, a C in the short game, and a B in putting. I can still swing the clubs well, as long as I remember to make a backswing! My short game swing is always the last to come around, and it's coming along, but can be graded no better than a C at this time. I hit good shot, bad shot, good shot, bad shot.

And for putting I'm pretty good, but I'm no world beater, so I figured a B would be OK there.

"A" for full swing, more like A-, technically my swing is pretty decent right now and I've been hitting the ball well.

"C" for short game. Sand play is good, not really hitting any "bad" chips/pitches but not many good ones either.

"D" for putting. Most based on the last tournament I played, bad speed control, bad start line control. Had to really grind to make some short ones. Putting should be easier ;-)

A for full swing - I generally hit more greens, and more near greens, than those with the same cap. I also have more distance than those with the same cap so can hit shorter irons in.

D for short game - I still miss the green too often with short game shots (very bad, very very bad) and from near the green I average 3.01 shots (I know this also relates to putting but still).

D for putting - I still don't make enough putts inside 12', and I still 3 putt so often. My good putting days are the days I score 40+ stableford points as my full swing is never far away

Both short game and putting have been improving, as has my handicap.

That's a though, but interesting, question.

I think my long game would probably be a A- or B. I can hit it quite solid and close to the pin from 150 yards in, but my main weakness in my long game is my lack of distance. I am often 10-20 yards short off the tee, and that can make quite a difference.

Short game overall is hard to tell, because there is a lot of fluctuation. I am really good out of the bunker, I am reasonably good on short chips, I am rather poor on long chips/short pitches. So overall I would give myself a C-

Putting has always been my weakness. I would give myself a D

The long game was rated "B".  I am an accurate driver of the ball but not particularly long.  Iron play tends to be a bit erratic but overall is decent.

Short game is decent. Rated it "B"

Putting just average.  Rated as a "C"

Full swing, especially driver, is where I am the weakest. On shorter iron approach shots, I am better than my contemporaries. Putting, pitching and chipping are what keep me at my current HC. I spend virtually all my practice time on the full swing.

I don't think I've played with anyone in the last year who I wouldn't swap my putting game with.  Game Golf has me as an 11.5 but I can't get the comparison handicap to go high enough to get my putting strokes gained down to even :-O

    • Day 5 - 30 minutes of green-side work. Lofted club chipping, bump and run with 9 iron.
    • I don't know if it's the torque balance or whatever else. But I got fitted for an Edel 4.0 a few years back and gained a bit under two strokes on the green! So, at minimum, get fit 😁
    • Yes, thats still your NPCR.  Your stance might be OB, which is legal, it might be down the cliff, or in water in a Penalty Area, those factors don't disqualify that from being the NPCR. However, once you make that drop, you have a new situation, one for which a left-hand stroke might be reasonable.  As you describe it, if you went further left of the path the ball might be OB if you got your feet off the path in taking a left-handed swing.  If all that is true, your NPCR for a left-hand swing could be on the right side of the path.  Its important to consider a probable sequence of relief situations before you decide to lift the ball to take relief the first time.
    • This is one of the handiest rules of thumb to remember. If relief is free, it's one club length. If it's with penalty, it's two club lengths (or on the line away from the flag when that's allowed). On the OB question, suppose your ball is on the cart path and your reasonable swing setup is right handed and you "have" to take relief (says it's a mini cobblestone path and the ball is sitting down and you're guaranteed to blade it and not really know where it's going, and probably damage your club). Your NPR is left of the path, as it almost always is for a righty. But while the ball can be in bounds, your feet will be across the OB line between the hole and the houses lining the fairway. Is that still an NPR? Are you allowed to take a right handed swing with your feet OB? What if the OB is a cliff or other landscape feature that means you can't stand there? Does a point on the left hand side of the path still count as NPR?
    • The OP says "under a prickly ugly bush" Not being there and in the absence of a clear photo of the situation, I am not entirely convinced about the reasonableness of the claim. However, DavePo43 is of course correct in all other aspects.
