Good for Jason. I know a lot of Olympic athletes would sacrifice their own health for their sport. Golf has never had the ties to the Olympics and is not the peak event of their sport. There is no need for them to sacrifice their health and the health of their families for a gold medal.

Not shocked the list of those not participating will grow as it gets closer.  There's some real problems going on in Brazil;

  • Zika Virus - more and more public health officials are calling for the games to be cancelled due to Zika
  • Government and contractor corruption - many of the facilities built for the Olympics are not ready and have huge cost over runs that will cause the country to lose even more money from hosting the Olympics than expected.  Police and other contractors have not been paid for quite some time and threaten to stop working.
  • Gangs and crime - Gangs and criminals are used to operating without much interference from police but as the games approach, there is more of a police presence which is being met with increased violence, especially against police, tourists and athletes training there.
  • Doping scandal - Brazil's only testing lab was suspended
  • The rail line being built to transport people to different sites is expected to not be completed until 4 days before the Olympics start.
  • Bike path built for biking events collapsed.
  • Guanabara Bay that is to be used for sailing and swimming competitions is still loaded with sewage and contains dangerous viruses and bacteria.

All this is happening while Brazil is in a horrible recession that has resulted in an almost 4% loss of GDP over the last year and significant increases in poverty and people losing their homes.

Honestly, if I were someone who was looking to have kids in the future I wouldn't take the chance at getting Zika either. Unfortunately, you have golf writers saying things like this:

Quote

Shipnuck: Obviously. The entitlement and point-missing among the top (male) golfers is depressing. They are on their way to getting their dying, boutique sport tossed from the biggest athletic happening in the world. Then they won’t have to worry about playing in the Olympics beyond 2020. A small win for these selfish players but a big loss for the sport to make new fans and reach new markets.

Entitlement and point missing? So they are supposed to potentially jeopardize their future children? Dying, boutique sport? Seems like this guy is covering a sport he doesn't even like.

This Olympics is going to be a hot, hot, hot dumpster fire!!!!!
And I love watching the Olympics.
There are way to many issues and concerns to run as smoothly as they hope.
What is going to happen when all the river swimmers come down with Diphtheria?

And I still do not see why Golf is an Olympic sport? It is such a elitist-niche sports that many countries will not be represented.
The leader-board will look the same as any given Sunday, depending on who shows up.

But I will still watch

I am of the opinion that all these high profile athletes who are not going to Rio are using the Zika virus as an excuse. A viable one, but an excuse just the same. That they  just don't want to go because of all the other negative stuff being associated with this olympics.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't go to Rio either under any circumstances.

I have read quite a bit on this virus. It can be pretty serious for pregnant women, and it can be spread through sexual contact by the male. Males, as a precaution, should not have sex for 6 weeks, if they have been bitten by a mosquito in a know Zika enviroment.

Once infected, after the effects pass, usually with in a week or so, the victum is immune to the virus.

Death from infection is very, very rare the CDC says.

As @newtogolf points out, every Olympic athlete should be seriously considering their participation.  Unfortunately most of them don't really have a choice; the Olympic Games is the one thing they're really preparing for.

Regarding Shipnuck's quote from @Jeremie Boop, I think the IOC needs golf more than golf needs them.

Quote

Democratic nations are no longer buying the argument that hosting the games is a wise investment. Every potential 2022 host city with a democratic government eventually pulled out of the bidding, many over economic concerns, leaving Beijing and Almaty, Kazakhstan, as the IOC's only two options.

from http://www.businessinsider.com/economic-benefits-of-hosting-olympics-2014-10

This year's olympics is turning into an exercise in disaster management and will force other countries to rethink their future hosting participation.

Like fencing? Or the biathlon? Or several other sports?

Seriously, how niche is synchronized swimming? Figure skating? Far more niche than golf.

Olympics still is one of the true global gathering of nations sports or otherwise. For me it is a chance to witness many sports and games that we don't get to see at all otherwise (like synchronized swimming.. :-)).The mirth surrounding it this time around is sad. The games have never been devoid of controversy but this one gives you more of a sinking feeling than the usual excitement of watching Usain Bolt fly two inches above the ground.

I would not fear Zika personally as much since we are not planning on having any more kids. I would be caked up in deet and carry on. But absolutely no judgment on those who fear it and choose to stay out. When it comes to health and safety, only you can look out for you.

I dont fault any top players that skip the Olympics. I probably wouldn't have watched much of it even if all of them did play to begin with.  For the mens game, i think the golf in the olympics should be for 25 and under only.

Screw the Olympics and Shiptuck too. He is such a douche nozzle. Who's dumb idea was it to have the Olympics in RIo during this volatile time in their country?

Maybe we can have the winter Olympics in North Korea...

I agree with his decision to pull out, but what confused me was his answer to if the Olympics had been held elsewhere, whether he would've played (just finished watching his press conference).  He kept deflecting his answer saying there are viruses or something everywhere, so he doesn't know... um? So is he saying that he will only play in the main golf venues because he thinks his family will be safe?  I would've been happier with the more simple version, "I don't know."  Once again, I'm good with his decision.  I just thought he wasn't quite prepared for the questions at the press conference.

Wow, is that really from a golf writer?  I agree that it Definitely sounds like it's written by a guy who doesn't like the sport.

Screw that guy (whoever he is).

I commend Jason's decision. Can't be easy to turn down a chance to represent your nation.

That being said I think the Olympics are not important to golf at all. There are many great sports that are not well-represented at the Olympic games. No big deal. The Olympics make for two weeks of interesting TV watching sports that most people don't care about for another four years.

Golf has their big events already.

Good for Jason. I hope Jordan pulls out as well. Any young player that may want children someday should consider it. Family is simply too important to mess with, especially when this isn't a big deal for golf.

Side note: I think the Olympics should be held in the same place every time, enough of this build new venues waste and drama about the site being ready. Build Olympic venues in Athens and have them there every time.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
