You have one shot and must succeed. What would it be?

  1. 1. If you were a member of a golf “team.” You have one shot to contribute and must succeed. What would it be?

    • Driver off the tee into the fairway
    • Fairway wood over a cross hazard to a designated layup area on a par 5
    • 7-iron approach somewhere on the green
    • 100-yard wedge shot to within 18 feet of hole
    • 8-foot putt, downhill, slightly right breaking
    • 10 yard sand shot to within 5 feet

You are a member of a golf “team.” You have one shot to contribute and must succeed.  What would it be?  Assume an “average” width fairway, “average” size green, “average” firm green, “average” speed green, etc.  Further assume that if you fail, your team loses.  So a driver that misses the fairway can't be saved by a recovery shot or a 7-iron to the fringe won't be salvaged by rolling the next shot close.  A miss results in a loss.

I'd take the driver in the fairway.  While no part of my game is particularly great, I do hit the fairway about 60% of the time.  I am not sure that any of the other options would result in a greater percentage.

How about everyone else?

Just hit the fairway?  No real length requirement other than an average drive, whatever that means for me?   I'll take that every time.  2d place is the layup, followed closely, assuming a good lie and conditions, by the 30' bunker shot.

7i on green would statistically (at the moment) be my strongest shot.

7i to the green for me.  That is one of my favorite shots.  I hit that shot quite a few times successfully over the weekend.

I'm reading the driver option as you also have to get at least 90% of your average distance, otherwise I think it would be the easiest for everyone.  With that caveat, I chose 7 iron.  Not sure if my statistics would say the same, but the iron, the wedge, and the putt are the only ones I feel comfortable with.  However I believe the last two are only 50/50 for a PGA tour player, and I feel I can hit the green half the time aiming at the center with a 7 iron.

Yes.  Someone can "game" the question by bunting a 75 yard driver or by chipping with a 7-iron from the fringe.  The question's intent is with which facet of the game is one most comfortable when under a bit of pressure and hitting one's standard shot.

100 yard wedge.  Actually had this scenario in my company's charity superball tournament.  The mulligan package included a shot from the red tees.  So I used mine on the 195 yd par 3 after everyone missed the green.  Red tees was 110 yards, so it turned out to be the right call.

All of them are dodgy in my hands, but the putt is probably the greatest likelihood of success. Maybe the drive would be ok if the objective was simply the fairway and not anything particularly long.

Given my home course generally has no sand in its traps, I want nothing to do with it.

Came down to the 7i on the green, or the 100yd shot to within 18'. The sand shot and the putt were out of the question.

I opted for the 100yd shot inside 18' and then checked my GameGolf stats. Should have picked the 7 iron to the green. Even the driver off the tee would have been better statistically.

I'll take my chances with the 7i onto the green.  100 yard shot to within 18 feet was tempting, but I like the odds better of just landing on the green from only 50 yards further out.

Damm, im out of the team :(. My best shoot are the lob shots. All my playing partners are amazed how easy i can stick them close to the ping even under pressure.

Drive.. average, woods and irons below average, 100 yardas approach average, sand save not as good as i wanted to, and a bad putter. Chip/pitch/lobs it´s the only thing a do well. Love u 60° 1999 cleveland.

    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
