  1. 1. If you were a member of a golf “team.” You have one shot to contribute and must succeed. What would it be?

    • Driver off the tee into the fairway
    • Fairway wood over a cross hazard to a designated layup area on a par 5
    • 7-iron approach somewhere on the green
    • 100-yard wedge shot to within 18 feet of hole
    • 8-foot putt, downhill, slightly right breaking
    • 10 yard sand shot to within 5 feet

Has to be the 7-iron on to the green for me.  I hit that shot on 3 of the 4 par 3's on my home course (if the flag is in the right place).

Driver - Cleveland CG Black 265
Fairway Wood - Adams Tight Lies 16 Degrees
Hybrids - 18 and 20 Degrees Adams Pro
Irons - 4-PW Adams XTD
Wedges - 52 and 56 degree Cleavland CG16

I chose the 7 iron shot, albeit I am not very consistent at any of them. My best shot is a 2" put on a well manicured green.

The putt. This summer I was in a scramble. Our team had 16 one putts, 6 for birdie. I read them all for the team and made 6 myself.

100yd is my most comfortable distance.  A nice 3/4 52* wedge.  Next would be the 7-rion, but for me that's 180yds, so a few more factors are in play there.

Yes.  For many of us shorter hitters, hitting a driver into the fairway or a 7-iron from 140 is easier because of the "angles".

With your later clarification…

Yes.  Someone can "game" the question by bunting a 75 yard driver or by chipping with a 7-iron from the fringe.  The question's intent is with which facet of the game is one most comfortable when under a bit of pressure and hitting one's standard shot.

… I'm going to say the putt.

According to @GAME GOLF my strongest area of play is my putting, where I'm about 2.12 strokes better than the average scratch golfer.

I went with the 10 yard sand shot. I am pretty good at getting out of bunkers since I actually practice this type of shot on occassions.

Don't mind being in the minority in this poll.    lol

Kudos on this question; the closeness of the vote indicates how well the options were balanced.

I wouldn't feel great about any of these, but I went with the putt.

I voted 7 iron but honestly could be a toss up between that and a 100 yard wedge to within 18'. These days I can throw my driver option in the mix too, which is a yoooge improvement...

With my new driver, I chose #1. Someone else must do the rest... My triple bogie yesterday came after I split the fairway with a solid tee shot.

On many days, a second would be the FW over the cross hazard. Jut don't ask me to get home in two.

A choice you didn't list: 50-yard wedge shot for one-putt. In a scramble, I'm usually good for one of these.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I'm actually surprised that more didn't choose that.  It's a close 2d or 3d for me.  A 30 foot sand shot, under good conditions just isn't that difficult....

I'm going to operate under the assumption that you can't "game" the question, because whatever you don't pick, someone else on your team will have to. Thus, hitting a 75-yard drive successfully into the fairway doesn't help anyone, nor does taking the 8-foot putt (because very likely we're all pretty equal at short putting, but I have a strength elsewhere that the rest of the team might not have).

I'm taking the 7-iron. Second choice would be the 100-yard wedge. Third would be the driver.

7 iron approach - because hitting approaches is the most satisfying shot for me - this year I hit those approaches rather consistently.  good year

good list - all about equally hard for me (driver being my most likely to succeed - if fact, when we do 4 man rotation shot in comps (usually on hole 17 and 18), I normally (almost always) get positioned to take the drive on the longest hole)

I'm confident that I would be successful on 4 of those shots; I voted driver into fairway because that's where I'd be most confident -followed by 8 foot putt, 100 yd wedge, then 7 iron into green.

I went with the drive - I'm not super long but I'm pretty straight.

Honestly - the rest of the shots, except maybe the putt, I have no chance at - it would be just lucky if it happened.

You are a member of a golf “team.” You have one shot to contribute and must succeed.  What would it be?  Assume an “average” width fairway, “average” size green, “average” firm green, “average” speed green, etc.  Further assume that if you fail, your team loses.  So a driver that misses the fairway can't be saved by a recovery shot or a 7-iron to the fringe won't be salvaged by rolling the next shot close.  A miss results in a loss.

I'd take the driver in the fairway.  While no part of my game is particularly great, I do hit the fairway about 60% of the time.  I am not sure that any of the other options would result in a greater percentage.

How about everyone else?

I think statistically, the 7i sounds like the easiest shot for me. Or at least possibly on the fringe? Of course, what you mean by a 7i shot is possibly different than what I mean?

IDK, for me a 9i would be a decent approach shot. 7i is getting iffy on hitting a green. So, that's why I added on the fringe or possibly even just nearby?

    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
    • Of course there's not a simple or knowable answer here. But the whole Caitlin Clark phenomenon is a nice example IMO. Suddenly there was wall to wall media coverage and national attention and... the women's tournament got similar ratings to the men's and much higher ratings than the men in the final four. With every indication that there will be some portion of the uptick that remains going forward. And there's the whole element that Sue Bird brought up. That basketball needed a pretty enough white superstar guard. One who looks like the "cute little white girls" that describes most of the soccer USWNT that's been able to achieve much higher popularity than any version of women's basketball, which is dominated by black players and none of any race who could be described as little... I do think women's sports are in a good place to start taking off more though. It's really only in the coming 5-10 years that the majority of girls will start to come of age with post Title IX grandmothers (as in their grandmothers were allowed to be serious athletes). I don't follow men's or women's basketball much, but in golf for sure the women's tour has gotten much deeper over the past 20 years and only looks to keep going in that direction. I've heard the same about women's basketball. And the patriarchal attitudes that socialized girls out of sports and everyone out of women's sports fandom aren't gone but have def diminished.
