This came up in a different thread so lets see if you do putt with a finger pointed down the shaft, if you did putt with a finger down the shaft or you use a different grip all together.

If you select other, you can tell us your grip style.

I use to, but for me it inhibited my distance control by locking up my wrists too much.

I do put my right index finger down the grip because of habit.   I don't know if it's right or wrong for me, I just do.   I believe I started when I was trying to control a pushed putt.  I've see better golfers putt w/o a finger down the shaft but actually I've never tried it.

I didn't choose "Other", I choose "I used to", but I can still tell you what I grip I use today. I use the reverse overlap. I also sometimes use reverse overlap on really short pitches.

Also in the "used to" category.  Just tried not doing it a year or two ago and it was comfortable, so I stopped.  Also, I have used the reverse overlap grip for as long as I can remember.

Yes. But I'm not a good putter.

My feeling is that the extended finger prevents me from flipping my wrists into the ball and sets me up for better distance control by "quieting movement." However, I just suck. Or maybe it's not how I imagine. I dunno.

I have right hand low, and my left hand has pointer finger down shaft but it is barely touching the grip.  I used to do the opposite but I pushed with that finger and caused bad push/pulls when under pressure to make a putt.

I use to, but stopped about two years ago after a few putting lessons.  My instructor had a reaction similar to @iacas when he saw me do it.

I find the best way to putt is to just let it swing, and an extended finger seems to interfer with that.

I voted no. I want to avoid anything that could cause me to over-control or twist the putter .

I use one of those "Flatso" grips and I just keep the corners in my lifelines with fairly light pressure and putt from the shoulders. Before that I used an interlock grip and a "trigger finger", kind of like on a full swing. That was ugly but it worked too. I've always been a pretty good putter, probably because I enjoy it & practice it a lot.

Double overlap, like Furyk does with his regular clubs.

I place my index finger down. It's the style I started with years ago and never changed, except once I experimented with Left Hand Low a long time ago.

I'm guessing, the finger pressure (feel) on long putts is subconscious related to distance control.
Never ever thought about it, it's just the grip style I have used for many years.

I see several older guys and gals using the finger down the grip, but seldom see younger players do it.
Didn't several of the older tour players also place their finger down the grip many beers ago?

Tried it once or twice but never liked it. I grip as described by Stan Utley in his The Art of Putting.

    • Day 7: got out my chipping net and worked on chipping in the living room for a solid 15 minutes. Worked on mostly low shots, but mixed in a couple of high shots as well.
    • Day 228 4-4 More hip/chest turn and wrist arching. Working on hinging wrist a bit later. Foam balls.
    • Day 27 (4 Apr 26) - Worked with grandson on basic pitches/punches in the back yard with varied irons/wedges.  Wrapped up the day rolling some putts on the 30’ carpet I can set up in the yard to give varied terrain - and this carpet rolls almost too easy. A great way to figure a read and know that pace has to be near perfect to get in the hole.
    • A bit of a struggle today.  Just some thoughts/musings.  For the backswing, it is like I am never going to be moving on from this. I don't know if I can ever get to the point where the backswing isn't like over 1.5 seconds in duration. Which is probably not ideal. I would like to get to the point where I can just fling the arms back and up.  I have to feel like my hands are going to hit my right thigh from P1 to P2. If not then they like to move 2-5 inches towards the ball from P1 to P2. Then it's just bad from there. This feeling is my hands not gaining much depth, just maintaining depth from set up. From the DTL view, the hands head towards the camera.  While I am doing that, hinge the crap out of the club with my wrist only. Hinge in a way that the club is pointing at the camera at P2.  From P2, lift the hands straight up. I can get here, and still roll the club inside and get it way too shallow.  With the downswing. There isn't much here. I still can't get the flow of this or the sequencing of this to line up. It doesn't help that hinging from P1 to P2 just throws off my entire timing as well.
    • Day 550 - 2026-04-04 Practiced in the sim at a club for awhile. Did a SW ladder and practiced for awhile with my 7I.
