When I started playing golf (in the old days) ... it was quite common to start with a half set, maybe add an extra wedge and a 2 + 4 wood or similar.

Irons were mostly 3-5-7-9-PW-SW or the even numbers.... those 3 irons had the loft of a current 4 iron. So about 6 irons, 2 woods and a putter.

If you had to go for a 8 iron, just choke down a bit on a 7 iron, etc.

When I changed to a full bag, well my scores didn't improve much, but the weight of the bag surely did.

Suppose you were allowed to carry only 10, what would your optimum set look like ?

I already do this when I carry my clubs in cooler weather -- driver, 5-wood, 5-PW, SW, putter. Maybe on round out of 10 I find myself wishing for a different fairwood wood or 4-iron. In warm weather I carry 14 clubs on a pull cart, and my scores are about the same.

6, 7, 8, 9, PW, 52, 58, putter, driver, 21* hybrid.  That lowers my wedge count by one and takes out a lot of clubs I don’t usually hit the green with anyway.

Something like this would work for me, probably substitute a hybrid around 22 degrees for the 4 iron, and maybe 48-52-56 on the wedges

10 is too easy.  How about 5 or 6, then it's tougher.

For 10: putter, driver, 60˚, 54˚, GW, PW, 8i, 6i, 4i, 2h

Super easy to just give up the odd irons and the 3w.  Rarely use 3w, and can just basically flight the even irons to fill the distance gaps.

Ive played many times with just a 5 iron 8 iron and a sand wedge and only ended up 5 or so shots higher more than what i usually do. Even broken 80 a few times. Most of us could get away fine with just 10 clubs. Probably wouldn't even notice the difference. Considering my current set id use these:

3w, 7w, 5i, 7i, 9i, pw, aw, sw, lw, and putter. Depending on the course, I might drop the lw, and add my 8i.

Actually even when carrying 14 clubs, those 10 I listed are the ones, I might only use. Very seldom will I use every club in my bag during a round. Sometimes I have played only using 6, or 8 clubs during a round.

Well I'm going to be the strange one here ain't I?

The 13 always in the bag,

Driver

4-wood

Hybrid (20°)

4-PW, 52°, 56°

Putter... (I think 3-iron might beat out the 60° that's a different topic)

So of my normal set-up I have to drop 4, eh. So we've already eliminated the 3-iron and the 60° so now I drop 4 more the 4-wood, Hybrid, 4-iron, and 52°...

Driver, 5-wood, 5-PW, SW, Putter that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I hate wedges, I can't hit them... I use a 56° for almost all my pitches, and I chip with whatever iron I feel like for that shot... I like to chip with an 8-iron quite a lot, sometimes a 7-iron, sometimes a 9-iron, very seldom do I chip with a sand wedge. I'll consider that for a pitch shot... I wouldn't ever be caught dead chipping with a sand wedge. I'll putt with a 4-iron before I chip with a sand wedge. There's just too much that can go wrong.
