Were you fit for the putter?

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

I bought an old, discontinued Zelocity launch monitor from a guy who was paid in the units when the company went out of business.  Sounds shady, I know, but it was just fifty bucks, and if it gives me some basic data, it'll be worth it.  I figure that once the pandemic allows, I'll take it in and compare readings with the Flightscope at the place that I take lessons and see how accurate it is.  I'm really hoping that it will help me get a real handle on what my average distances are.

So, this thing arrived today, and I was able to get out and hit a few shots after the rain.  Seems to be pretty accurate.  It shows a well struck 7 iron with a carry distance of about 145 yards, and a well struck 9 iron carrying about 125 yards.  Recently, I had a well struck 7 iron show a carry of 156 yards, as measured by a FlightScope X3 unit indoors, and a well struck 9 iron carry 136 at an outdoor range with TopTracer technology.

Hopefully, I'll get a chance to take it with me to my next lesson - whenever that is - and check it next to the FlightScope. If it is around ten yards off, at least I'll have a baseline, and I'll be able to monitor my distances and get more consistent.  That's one of the (many) things about my game that I have simply been clueless about. Regardless of its overall accuracy, it could definitely distinguish between a well struck ball and a fat shot, or one off the toe.  I saw a big drop off on those.

Won an ebay auction yesterday for a set of Vokey SM6 chrome wedges. They’ve seen a bit of play but should be a massive upgrade to my antique vokeys. At the very least having a set of 3 should be better. They are 52 56 and 60 in the F, S and M grinds and 8 10 8 bounce. Set me back 175€ for the set with shipping.

Callaway Epic Flash 5 wood with a Tensei Blue AV 75 X shaft from Callaway Pre Owned. Needed a club to slot above my 4i for tee shots on dogleg par 4s and second shots into certain par 5s, and I have a weird mental block when trying to hit hybrids, so 5 wood it was.

I have that same affliction with hybrids and woods in general. In fact I just started hitting my driver again last year. For about 2 years I teed off with my 3 iron and didn’t have a fairway wood of any type.

A dozen balls and a visor. For some reason visors seem to have become hard to find, so when I saw one I grabbed it.

Yeah, I didn't hit driver for the first 2.5-3 years that I played golf. Wasn't until last year that I finally figured it out enough to not cost myself two strokes per hole, and it made a huge difference in my scoring potential.

I haven't had a chance to play much with it since I got it but early indications are very good.

I have a good friend who I think has been buying them all up.

He suffers from thinning hair; He claims that sunshine on his head helps his hair grow. Personally, I'm not seeing it. But to each his own.

    • Day 14, April 22.  This morning, before going to work, I took the time to hit two dozen balls (indoors, off the mat, into the net), all with a 6-iron.  As before, this was focused on the pelvis separation and the length of the backswing -- yesterday's video view was encouraging that I'm making progress.
    • Hey folks, Here's be a better video that outlines some of my challenges.  Any suggestiosn welcome.
    • I enjoyed the distance wedges episode. It's something that I've not really taken the time to figure out for sure, but I went to a local trackman place over the winter and tested my four wedges (PW, AW, 54, 58) and got four yardages with each one. I am using Dan Grieve's method - you have a 1, 2, 3, and "full". The number references the number of clubhead widths between your heels.  I never really got to grips with the clock method - I'd find my 9:00 one day would go 40 yards and the next day 60 yards purely based on how fast I happened to swing it, but I couldn't turn that off and I was basically at sea with the speed method (Wesley Bryan does this - he takes almost a full swing for a 15 yard chip). The Grieve method I set my stance width and that really limits how much my swing moves back and forth and the speed seems to be naturally more consistent.  Anyway, I wound up with four yardages for each club - PW 48, 80, 112, 127; AW 41, 73, 101, 112; 54 36, 57, 91, 98; 58 28, 47, 81, 86 So, in order, I have 28, 36, 41, 47, 48, 57, 73, 80, 81, 86, 91, 98, 101, 112, 112, 127 which gives me a pretty good set of numbers. I do have a big gap from 57 to 73, but I can do a 2.5 58, which is giving me about 64. Then as they noted you can give it a bit more, or grip down on a club too to adjust a little bit. It's really useful and very freeing to just know what to do. When you have a 54 yard pitch, rather than pulling my 58 and thinking how hard is 54, I can just take my 54, do a "2" swing and just grip down a little and I'm in decent shape.  Incidentally, Erik talked a bit about watching Scheffler picking off his yardages to within a yard. I've watched DJ do that too with his wedges. Scottie does it trying to hit it all the way up to like 200 exactly with a 6-iron and he's hitting it 200.5, 199.7, etc. Absolutely mind blowing how good his distance control is. Insane.
