Yes, it's true that medication doesn't affect everyone the same way, but I have some experience with this and have learned a few things...

It's pretty easy to get hooked on pain pills.  Actually, it's almost impossible to not get addicted to them if they are prescribed for an extended period and taken every day.  If it's a short term thing, and "take as needed", that's not a big deal.  But if it's more than a couple of months, and it's "take one every 4-6 hours" I don't care who you are...you will become dependent on them.

Vicodin/Hydrocodone usually isn't used for chronic pain or extended periods.  It's mainly for short-term situations, like after surgery or if you break a bone or something.  When it gets to the point of seeing a pain management doc, they'll usually move to something designed for long-term issues like Oxycontin.  This is highly addictive and will grab you within a few weeks.  I've never seen anyone have a reaction like Tiger from Hydrocodone.  I know there were several meds supposedly involved, and the police report indicates Vicodin, and a couple of muscle relaxers, but the blacking out/falling asleep and not knowing where you are or what has happened is more in line with Oxycontin or Oxycodone.  Ambien can also have a similar effect, where people will basically sleep walk and talk, maybe make a sandwich and eat and go back to bed and have no recollection, which he has taken in the past.  If your eyes/head isn't constantly moving, and you are staring at one thing (like reading a book, or driving and looking straight ahead) it's easy to nod off.

Then yopu haven't learned as much as you thought.

Although this is a recent article, not sure if this was expected (procedural) or new news. Is it me or is the headline misleading? Is entering a program to reduce a DUI charge to reckless driving "charges dropped"?

Quote

Woods’ lawyer also announced that Woods plans to enter a first-time DUI offenders program that would reduce the charge from DUI to reckless driving.

Well technically the "DUI charges" were "dropped" but new charges (reckless driving) were added.

I just read an espn report that TW had 5 different drugs listed on his toxicology report from his last run in with the law.

I showed the list to my wife. She just shook her head and said "the man has some serious problems".

Sorry I can't C& P on this device.

Yeah, those are about as strong as it gets. I could not imagine being under the influence of all that at once. The weakest thing in his system was the THC lol

Jeez, shame on him for driving with all that.

Tiger Woods had Vicodin, Dilaudid, Xanax, Ambien and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) in his system when he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in May, according to a toxicology report released Monday.

Does the THC (or other drugs found) potentially open him up to being suspended by the PGA Tour?

I wouldn't think so given the circumstances. If it did, they could just give him a token 6 month suspension starting now with the expectation that he won't be playing for the next 6 months anyways. But considering the debt the tour owes Tiger and the fact that he's (hopefully) gotten help for this stuff, I don't see them being heavy handed like that at all.

Medical marijuana is legal in Florida, so that's not an issue, even if he didn't have a script for it I don't see how anyone can care about that. But taking Vicodin and Dilaudid? that's heavy stuff, hope he's seriously getting clean because a person doesn't have to take very many doses of Dilaudid before getting hooked, one script is enough.

Hydromorphone (Dilaudid) is and active metabolite of Hydrocodone so it is very common for people taking hydrocodone to have hydromorphone in their system also.  The concerning aspect to me as a physician who treats both chronic pain issues and addiction is the combination of Xanax and Opiates.  My office has a policy to never prescribe opiates and benzodiazepine to the same patient due to safety issues.  Over 50% of the accidental overdose deaths due to opiates involve combination with a benzo.  I call it pulling a Whitney Houston.  A little hydrocodone, Xanax, THC and a glass of wine... add a warm bath and you don't wake up the next day.

I was struck by how his statements have been so Tiger... " I received professional help to manage my medications,” “Recently, I had been trying on my own to treat my back pain and a sleep disorder, including insomnia,  but I realize now it was a mistake to do this without medical assistance".  umm, Bullshit.  So, what you're saying is... these were not prescribed medications being managed by a physician and you weren't able to manage them on your own because??? you're a drug addict.  Reminds me of a meme I saw once... The only thing preventing you from getting what you want in life is the same bullshit story you tell yourself every day.

Medical marijuana is legal for a VERY limited number of conditions.  It's also only available in very low THC concentrations.  Smokable marijuana is not legal in any case.

We have no idea whether the THC in his system was legally prescribed or not.

True, but I don't see why anyone would care about that whatever the case, the other drugs in his system are far more alarming.

I don't know that it matters.

Does anyone expect him back on tour anytime in the next year...or two...

It doesn't surprise me to see that he had all those drugs in his system. When I saw the pictures and they said all he was taking was Xanax, I was like 'Bullshit.' Look at that man's eyes. Those are the eyes of a man who was seriously drugged up.

    • Day 14, April 22.  This morning, before going to work, I took the time to hit two dozen balls (indoors, off the mat, into the net), all with a 6-iron.  As before, this was focused on the pelvis separation and the length of the backswing -- yesterday's video view was encouraging that I'm making progress.
    • Hey folks, Here's be a better video that outlines some of my challenges.  Any suggestiosn welcome.
    • I enjoyed the distance wedges episode. It's something that I've not really taken the time to figure out for sure, but I went to a local trackman place over the winter and tested my four wedges (PW, AW, 54, 58) and got four yardages with each one. I am using Dan Grieve's method - you have a 1, 2, 3, and "full". The number references the number of clubhead widths between your heels.  I never really got to grips with the clock method - I'd find my 9:00 one day would go 40 yards and the next day 60 yards purely based on how fast I happened to swing it, but I couldn't turn that off and I was basically at sea with the speed method (Wesley Bryan does this - he takes almost a full swing for a 15 yard chip). The Grieve method I set my stance width and that really limits how much my swing moves back and forth and the speed seems to be naturally more consistent.  Anyway, I wound up with four yardages for each club - PW 48, 80, 112, 127; AW 41, 73, 101, 112; 54 36, 57, 91, 98; 58 28, 47, 81, 86 So, in order, I have 28, 36, 41, 47, 48, 57, 73, 80, 81, 86, 91, 98, 101, 112, 112, 127 which gives me a pretty good set of numbers. I do have a big gap from 57 to 73, but I can do a 2.5 58, which is giving me about 64. Then as they noted you can give it a bit more, or grip down on a club too to adjust a little bit. It's really useful and very freeing to just know what to do. When you have a 54 yard pitch, rather than pulling my 58 and thinking how hard is 54, I can just take my 54, do a "2" swing and just grip down a little and I'm in decent shape.  Incidentally, Erik talked a bit about watching Scheffler picking off his yardages to within a yard. I've watched DJ do that too with his wedges. Scottie does it trying to hit it all the way up to like 200 exactly with a 6-iron and he's hitting it 200.5, 199.7, etc. Absolutely mind blowing how good his distance control is. Insane.
