Nike will transition out their selling of bags, balls, and clubs, but will still sell apparel and shoes.

Fascinating... I believe Adidas is selling (or has already divested) TaylorMade.

Millennials like going to TopGolf and playing WGT Golf on their phones, from what I can tell.

I'm not sure I've ever swung a Nike club. I've never used a Nike ball except as a water ball. Might be time to try them out and get something on the cheap. I imagine their clubs and balls are just as good as any other of the big manufacturers.

Millennials (like myself) would like golf more if it wasn't so expensive. So many fixed costs: balls, clubs, green fees, cart fees. If it wasn't for the fact that I'm still covered under my parents membership, I wouldn't be able to afford to play anywhere. Not consistently, anyway.

Golf was already in decline before Nike and Tiger. Here where I live we have lost one (1) Par 72 Course a few years ago and are about to lose another (very nice) course.

Very interesting.

I also think they way the game is taught needs to change. My millennial daughters would be terrified to go to a range and humiliate themselves in front of strangers, much less learn from an old PGA Pro.

Yeah, there needs to be a change in the PGA teaching program. But I think a lot of these problems could be fixed within the next ten years, if only because millennials will age into the sport. Golf is played by those with disposable income, and most people (in this day and age, anyway), don't get that until around 30-35.

It would also help to have a star on the Tour. The dirty secret of golf's success (the excess part of it, the wild amount of money being made) was because of Tiger Woods and his ridiculous cross-appeal and otherworldly skills. Regardless of what people may say, everyone tunes in to watch Superman, even if you hope he loses.

I have always thought when learning how to golf, the idea of getting good at the easier, more fun  shots first was the way to go. I'm in the minority thinking like that, but it is my opinion.

Huh. I hadn't heard about this.

Rumors of golf's decline are greatly exaggerated. It is just no longer profitable for what is basically an apparel company.

Makes one wonder what becomes of the tour pros that use Nike products.   I'm sure they will be courted to go other places.   Nike gambled on Tiger and Rory and it hasn't turned out the way they envisioned.

Even though they made some nice stuff; I never thought of Nike as a golf company.  I mean, I'd buy a set of Craftsman irons tomorrow.  Nike not so much.  Paying Tiger, and Rory, all that dough only reinforced the idea.

In der bag:

One day someone will look in your bag and think you're playing a bunch of knock-off clone clubs ;-)

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
