Best Shot of the Week

First hole in a while. We had a group waiting to start behind us and a random guy paired with us. A 427 yard par 4. Hit the driver straight for my longest ever drive of 287 yards. I guess I need an audience. 

Proceeded to hit my 8 iron on the green and naturally 3 putted for bogey 🤬

Yesterday's round. 176, 7-iron from the left bunker on #2. Pin was back left, hit it to 4ft.

I’ve got 3, all from the same round:

1) I had a really good start to my round on New Year’s Eve. After a perfect 5W to the middle of the fairway on the short par-4, I had 85 yards, downwind. Briefly thought about flying it in, but decided to hit a chippy PW and run it up to the pin. I hit it perfectly and watched it bounce once and roll pin-high to 4ft. Made the birdie putt.

2) On the tenth hole, my second shot finished in a greenside bunker, which was a shot I was dreading. Landed it about 3ft on the green and it trickled to within a foot. Was nice to make par from the sand, which I almost never pull off.

3) On the short par-5 14th, I hit a beautiful drive to the middle of the fairway. Had 210 into a shallow but wide, downwind, with two deep bunkers staring me in the face, one in the middle, one on the right. I decided to start it at the left edge of the right-hand trap, and draw it in. I hit it kind of low, but exactly how I planned. It bounced short, and rolled onto and to the back of the green. I then proceeded to three-putt for par from there 😒

I chipped one in from 30 yards to save par yesterday. It was nice.

It’s funny before the 40 footer, my son-in law was commenting how he has never seen me hit the ball like I was that day. Also I have always admired Jack Nicklaus from the beginning read his books and tips and over that putt that day like Jacks mind set I  send to myself Jay you can make this, In one of his books he said  “if you think your going to drop it you proudly will.” I have always said nobody has picked up a golf club better then Jack Nicklaus.

Back pin, i missed the green on the back shortsiding myself. The round wasn´t quit going my way so i decided to just have fun and play an agressive lob. For a 15 yard shot I made a Driver Speed swing with my 60°. The ball skies rocket and after a while went down 5 feet in front of the hole, one bounce and the second was inside the hole. Birdie.

Best shot this week was a pitch onto the green on a par 5. Hit a well struck drive, but it was pushed about 50 yards right of where I was aiming and landed on an adjacent, parallel fairway. Had about 210 to the front of the green, with some tree trouble in my target line, but with my typical draw, the tree limbs should have been mostly out of play. Hit a 4-hybrid and it didn't draw at all, but luckily it was thin contact and flew under the branches. Had about 30 yards to the pin from a downhill lie in wet rough. Hit a perfectly executed pitch (using technique I've been practicing a lot) that one hopped and stopped about 5 feet from the pin. I did roll in the birdie putt.

It’s been three weeks. Let’s start this topic up again. I had several good shots this week, but I couldn’t decided on just one of them, so I settled for the top four (plus an honorable mention), three of which were from today’s 9-hole round.

1) On the fourth hole today, I was sitting just outside the 100-yard marker, but the pin was in the back and I was playing into the headwind on that particular hole. I pulled a 9I and stuck it pin-high, 10-12 feet to the right. Two-putt par.

2) On the ninth hole, I was sitting about 220 after my near-perfect 3W drive. Opted to try for the green in two, and hit another near-perfect shot that finished five feet short. Up-and-down for birdie to finish the day!

3) This was probably my favorite shot of the week. On the fifth hole, I hit my second into the right-hand bunker. When I got up to the green, I found out part of the bunker was filled with water. The section with water was exactly where my ball sat. Instead of taking a free drop in the (somewhat) dry part of the bunker, I decided to play it. Popped it out nicely, and it rolled to about eight feet. Made a bogey, but from that lie, it could’ve easily been a lot worse.

4) This was from yesterday’s practice. My brother and I were doing an 18-hole up-and-down contest around the practice green. I was 1up through seven holes, and it was my turn to pick the hole (we alternated picking). I picked a very short chip, straight uphill. My chip was dead on line, and it rattled the flag and dropped. The pressure shifted to my brother, who had to make it to keep his deficit at a single hole. Dead center. I went on to win the match 4&2, adding on to my 5&4 putting challenge win earlier in the day, which was also 18 holes.

4.5) After our 2-hour practice session, we did a just-for-fun 3-hole challenge where he chipped normally, and I used the grip of the club to hit. I chipped one to about four feet. Lost the challenge by two or three strokes, but neither of us really cared about the outcome there.

Topped my drive about 80 yards on a straight par-4. The topped drive came up just short of the start of the fairway, about 260 yards to the front of the green, but luckily the ball was sitting up nicely in the rough.

I had been topping the crap out of the ball this round, which is uncharacteristic of my game (more of a fat shot miss guy), so I was a bit anxious over the ball with a 5-wood, hoping I wouldn't top two in a row.

Said a little prayer to the fairway wood gods, made a great swing, and absolutely nuked it. The ball rolled out to about 10 yards short of the green. Proceeded to chip on, but to a bad spot, and 3-putted for a double. But the 5-wood approach was by far the best shot of the day for me. The type of shot that makes you temporarily forget all the doubles, triples and quadruples from the round.

Chipping is weakest part of my game. Playing a couples scramble yesterday and one of the ladies put her drive on a 168 yd par 3 down a steep slope near water and a lot of duck butter. Others chipped and only 1 hit the green but 25 ft from pin. I loosely gripped 57 degree and it felt good...and looked better...into the cup for the bird. Nothing dramatic except me & chipping are not compatible.

It was finally ruled in Michigan that members can play golf as long as you walk and take some other precautions so I was able to play a couple 9s over the weekend. Yesterday I had my first eagle of the year it's a super short slight dogleg left par 4 probably should be a long par 3 but I'll take it. Wind has been incredibly strong last couple days and I had a stiff wind at my back. Normally I choke up a bit and I hit my 17 degree hybrid but with the wind I hit a 5 iron. I flushed it and got it up in the air with a little draw the wind caught it and it was heading right for the middle of the green (not allowed to put flags in so just aim for the middle anyway) I knew it was fairly close but as I walked up I was just about 5 feet just past the hole, hit the knee knocker in for eagle went towards my best 9 hole score of the year so far a 4 over 40. 7 and 8 were also down wind I carried it pin high right on 7, and 8 I thought I hit it terribly it was off the toe a bit but I was about 10 yards short left of the green, short game is terrible right now though so walked away with pars but the drives were notable.

It was my second shot on the 16th hole today. After pulling a few tee shots, I adjusted my aim a little farther right and naturally I hit it straight into the trees on the right. Had about 200yd left to the green with the ball slightly above my feet and no straight shot to the green through the trees (I could line up to the left greenside bunker at best). Thought about punching it out into the fairway and leaving myself a 40yd shot into the green, but then decided to try and hit the green with a big cut shot. Choked down a little bit on my 2h and hit it perfectly. Watched the ball start left of the trees and take a hard right turn, ending up on the back right side of the green. Turned a possible bogey into an easy par.

My week of golf is effectively over, so I’m gonna share two shots, both from yesterday’s round, both on the back nine.

1) On hole 12, a par 3 with a creek way left, I hit my tee shot into that creek (actually wasn’t that far off line, but it hit a slope and kicked hard left). After taking a drop, I decided to hit a bump-and-run 6I. Played it exactly how I wanted to, and it rolled in for a three, one of the only times (maybe the only time) I’ve made par with a penalty stroke.

2) On the 14th hole, after my tee shot found the fairway, I pulled a 7I from about 155 and knocked it onto the green about 20 feet out. Felt great coming off the face too! This was probably my favorite shot of the week.

Nice shot. I often remember and gain more confidence from the shots that I make a great swing on and absolutely flush that end up in the center of the green moreso than the ones where I make a bad swing, hit it thin, but manages to roll up to 10 feet or something.

We were playing our usual match and on #6, the last hole for the first 6 hole match, I was off the par 4 green by about 40 yards, preparing to hit my third shot.  I hit a low spinning wedge which hit the green, bounced forward and then stopped on a dime 2 feet from the hole.  Rolled in the par putt and we salvaged a tie with my low and partner's high.  Thank you Titleist!

Played 27 holes yesterday. #18 is a par 5 with a creek that runs across the  fairway at 220yds from the center of green. I hit driver short of creek, had about 235yds to the flag. Decided on the cut 3wood over 2iron and hit it just about perfect. Landed softly and rolled to 5ft for a easy eagle.
