I'm  with you. I took a while to warm to him, but as he has matured I've become a fan.

I think Fowler always seemed pretty mature and level headed.  He just looks mature now vs. the punk kid image from his younger days.  I'm with you guys, I'd like to see him pull out the win.

As far as the course, I think it looks great and looks like it's set up fair.  Missing the fairway (and they look pretty wide to me) is supposed to be a disadvantage.  These guys are the best in the world, they should be able to dial back and hit fairways when necessary.

Well the guy from my pga chapter, Derek Barron, finished at -2. He had been doing mkenzie tour stuff i guess, but im definitely pulling for him to keep it up.

Danny Willett...

Is to the mid-2010s as Ian Baker Finch was to the early-1990s.

Is was fun watching him win, but I suspect that's it.

I don't think the guys that struggled can blame the course. They struggled because their games betrayed them.

I think that's a fair assessment. Most of my memories of him being an immature punk are visual and not necessarily tied to any of his actions.

Of the young guns he is becoming my favorite. As a Mickelson fan I am in dire need of a replacement.

I never got that feeling. He's always been respectful. He never acted out on the course. He always has been very nice to the fans, especially the younger golfers who admired him.

Just finished watching my recording of it since I was at work until 5+ hours into the coverage.  Watched Paul Caseys round and his interview, I've always liked him but he really deserves some credit, really really respectful and respectable guy.  Hope he wins a major someday.

Yeah but you said this before Rory and Jason kept hitting driver into the fescue and sinking there chances. I have to admit  felt the long hitters would be favored but its exact opposite. The shorter hitters are doing well.

Harvey Penick used to say, "The woods are full of long hitters." This week we might have to change "woods" to "fescue"! I don't understand what the hell Rory and Jason were doing out there today! They should know their swings well enough to slap a band aid on! Strange was saying the same thing. Why just keep bombing away? Hit 3 wood, or play a fade to eliminate the left side of the course. Both guys were missing it two ways today.

Yeah, for the fairways being so wide, plenty of guys missed them today. If the place can dry out things could become very interesting. The early players were throwing darts that made it look like the Bob Hope Desert Classic!

What makes you think they weren't trying to fix it on the golf course, or trying to play a fade, etc.?

You know what's also full of long hitters? Winners circles. :-)

The two greatest players of all time were renowned for their overwhelming power advantage over the field.

If you want to look at some other golfers. Sam Snead bombed the ball. Arnold was known for his powerful swing.

Yea, the greatest golfers of all time had the power advantage.

I'm usually super excited for the USO but I dunno if it's the coverage or the course, just not feeling it this year. Really frustrated with the quality of announcing and the way the broadcast is produced.

Ironic that Kevin Na complained about the fescue, shoots -4, McIlroy says what are you guys complaining about, the fairways are wider than usual, shoots +5. That's golf for you.

I have the tv on mute and I think visually the coverage looks pretty good. I love the shot tracker and the split screen stuff

That's funny

while watching coverage last night, one of the commentators talked about AimPoint while Justin Rose was putting and the other guy said it was a bunch of mumbo-jumbo. It sounded like Johnny Miller but I'm not sure who it was. Why are the commentators so uneducated? Idiots.

What was it Rory said about the fairways " we have 60 yards from right line to left line ... if you can't hit it within that avenue you should pack your bags and go home"

Also here is a day 1 summary - 3 amateurs under par, 1 player ranked in the top 10 in the world under par {head scratcher}

Guess McIlroy's slamming the trunk, maybe he'll rally.

I read somewhere someone said if you put 75 top pros and 75 top ams in the majors these days, an am is gonna win it in 5 years. Was it Jack Nicklaus? I forget.

Looks like birdies are falling again this morning. Up to 50 players under par now. Even Paul Casey smiled last night and said it doesn't really feel like a U.S. Open. It shouldn't be this easy. Almost feels more like a U.S. Open if you're in the top 20 in the world and the John Deere Classic for everybody else. Definitely a bit bizarre so far.

    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
