New G400 driver released this week on tour. No official details yet. Crown looks similar to the G except with the addition of some dimples. No composite crown so I'm guessing the benefits will be better aerodynamics with the dimples, new sole design and slightly smaller head size (445cc). They're also using tungsten weights which is something new.

As with the G30 and G there will be 3 versions of the driver, standard, LS Tec and SF Tec.

LS Tec Version, tungsten is more forward than with the standard head. This is the version I'm using in my G30 so I'm interested to give this one a try.ping-g400-driver-1300.jpg

Our PING rep came by the other day to show them to us.  I thought it looked awesome! I'm excited to get my hands on one.  I thought the back had a bit more of the gold color though.

The shape of the head is similar to the G?

My driver and putter are the two newest clubs in my bag, so I'm least likely to replace them any time soon.

However, those fairway woods look nice and I know how highly you think of Ping, so I'll be giving Ping a consideration when I change anything else in my bag (debating what, if anything, comes in new this year... debating changing the top of the bag, including woods).  Plus I do like my Ping wedges...

Yeah it looks very similar to the G, but he said the face is a different metal that allows for more forgiveness than the G which, in their "research", will make it have a much smaller dispersion than anything else on market.  The only real difference is the size and the back strip.  The color combination on it is really cool.

Well I got our G400 demo today! The face is definitely different than the G.  They also added a little more design to the head which makes it more distinguishable.  We got a regular shaft, so I didn't swing very hard with it.  But, it's a lot quieter (I don't really like it being quieter but I'd still use it) and does feel a bit bouncier off the face.  Officially, the demos are available July 10 to the the public, but you can't purchase one until the 27th for drivers and the G400 irons.  The woods and hybrids can be purchased in August.  I haven't received our demo irons yet, but I assume those will play very similarly to the G.

Why didn't they just make 10 louder?

Ping makes some of the most consistent, easy to hit drivers. I do prefer the Epic Sub Zero though. It's more based on feel and looks over a performance edge.

This article is a great in depth look at the G400.

https://mygolfspy.com/2017-ping-g400-drivers-2/

A quick summary of the main points.  They changed the aerodynamics, based on the fact that the heel leads the toe of the face on the downswing, which ultimately led to a 445cc head among something else I don't know how to explain.  This size/arrangement allows greater clubhead speed on the down swing.  The other main point is sound.  I guess the engineers created a sound that is "pleasing" to hear. So, as some previous models were loud, you might instinctively flinch before impact.  But, with a more pleasing sound, you would swing through and get more speed.

    • Good progress. I am finally feeling like I am settling my weight into my right foot earlier in the backswing. Right hip sinks back, right leg feels staying flexed. Feeling very stable and firm in the right leg. I feel like I could do a good squat with that right leg. Very balanced.
    • oops, forgot Pebble Beach and Spyglass.  And two more of the original Open rota, Prestwick and Musselburgh (with hickory shafted rentals).  And Muirfield.  And maybe a few more, I'll check my list when I get home.
    • Day 189 2-20 Really focused on rotating the forearms today with wrist arched. Did some single arm swings as well.
    • In March of 1978 I got to play Pebble Beach GC. Played it from the back tees, since I knew I'd probably never play it again. Oops, shot 102.  Three weeks later, I played Torrey Pines - South, again from the back tees (maybe 6,700 yds in those days). Shot an 87, and missed a birdie putt on the lakeside No. 18 green. In 2021, I played TPC Deere Run in the Quad Cities area. This is site of the John Deere Classic. It was early October and the course was undergoing renovation, so I got to play the front nine twice for $110, lunch included. The course was great and the driving range was unbelievable. Hint: you need to pay attention to the wind drafts before you try to challenge the cross bunkers! BTW, Deere Run is a public course. Norwood Hills Country Club is site of the Champions tour event, the Ascension Charity Classic, now the Stifel Charity Classic. This classic layout has 36 holes. This summer I hope to play the West course where the Champions event is held; Missouri Golf Association is sponsoring an amateur event there.  I have played the shorter East course three times - it's quirky but quite fun. Also: Circa 2000 I played il Picciolo, a course at the base of Mount Etna in Sicily. The volcano was spewing ash that week. The course frequently hosts European pro events. Lots of elevation change and gently rippling fairways. Left a 7i shot 10 yards short of green on one par 5. Turns out the hole had a 12-foot high alpine flagstick, and I was not as close to the green as I thought I was (bad perspective).
    • Just the Plantation course at Kapalua. Not like I didn't know it, but it was a visceral reminder of how ridiculously good the tour pros are. That course is f***ing *hard* playing it from ~6500 yards. From the tips!? Then if there's wind?!
