Stop Lying About Your Distance - It's Pissing Me Off (Rant Thread)

Definitely alot of people who really aren't sure how far they actually hit it. But there are some who can actually hit the ball over 300 consistently. To be honest I bet I can touch 350 no problem but I can push into the mid 130's on swing speed as well. However there are many times where that distance will hurt me big time on a bad swing. I have learned to try and hit my irons better if I want to lower scores.

Why do you care so much? If people want to lie to themselves, that's their problem.

I'm actually a bigger fan of using the median as an indicator of typical driving distance because the mean is influenced too heavily by large differences in the tail end of the numbers. This being golf, you're going see a much larger difference from a shot shorter than normal dispersion than longer so the egregious mis-hit has a disproportionately high influence on the outcome.

I like this.   It makes much more sense than average.

Pretty much my opinion. Plus, I’ve seen a few guys who have an overall poor game but can consistently hit long drives. Not common but it does occur.

My oldest Grandson is/was that guy you discribed. 300+ yards off the tee, in the fairway, with an occassional par 5 green in two.

After that,  he might as well just grab a large tree limb for  his short game.

I normally have a carry distance of 340 with 25 yards of roll.........................Sure makes golf boring.Actually I have seen quite a few guys who can hit driver 270 on reg basis but its the rest of they're game that is crap plus a few of them drives they don't know where its going.

I think some discrepancy occurs because most people are basing there yardage from the course, not on a TrackMan with a relatively level area. They’ll read a sign at the tee that says Par 4 420yds. They don’t really know from where exactly that is measured, it’s downhill, etc. they get to their ball and shoot/step off from sprinkler/yardage marker and see they have 120yds to the pin and thInk ‘wow...I just drove it 300yds!’  If you took that exact drive, same wind but on a level surface with a monitor it reads 265yds total distance. Just a thought.

There are a lot of factors that play into distance. Swing speed, club face contact, wind, elevation, altitude, etc...I suggest people spend a little money on a trackman or a gamegolf device and see what your typical numbers are. Gamegolf has my typical drives in the 230s tough I usually drive the ball 250+ a few times around. Heel contact and OTT swing path have a lot to do with my average being lower than what I know I can reach. However, I play tees and plan my way around the course based on my typical drive. If others want to hallucinate about their abilities let them...as long as it doesn’t effect me.

Unless I’ve seen a person hit they can claim anything they want. It really doesn’t register until then and , in the end, doesn’t matter either way.

These rants used to bother me, but then I realized what other people think they know about my swing and distances doesn't matter. I have learned that I used to misjudge my distance because, as @Vinsk mentioned, I didn't realize that cutting the corner and having 120 in didn't mean I drove 300, more like 270. But then I started using the game golf app to track my actual distances, which showed me I wasn't as long a hitter as I thought, but not nearly as short as others claimed I had to be given my handicap. Let people say what they want about their distances/your distances, it really makes no difference to anything in the end.

Also, I've used trackman\flightscope and indoor ranges enough to know my swing speeds.

As they should. Its an athletic feat that most people will never achieve.  Mostly cause they are lazy and scrawny like op and refuse to hit the gym . (/s)

ps. Last round I averaged 300 off the tee on my drives. I hit 3 drives and was 2 under on those holes. Did I mention it was meters? :-D

Asian standard of beauty is not the same as Western countries. We don't find big muscular aesthetics appealing. Girls tend too like the Pretty boy Kpop look. I guess if i had a muscular physique you would have a hard on for me and take me out on a date?

You're right about 1 thing though i am lazy to hit the gym, but im not scrawny im actually overweight atm. Im around 170 lbs and i should be around 150 lbs. Asian BMI shows im overweight. Thus me playing golf again for exercise. Thanks for your concern though. Guess i'll do some push-ups now and stop drinking Cola(which i am atm).

Congrats on your 300 meter drives can you sign my driver? Almighty random anon with 150 mph swing  🙄🙄🙄

I use a Garmin watch to track every shot I hit, takes the guess work out of things.

I am averaging 257 yards with my driver this summer.  I think the OP is forgetting to factor in variables like slope, wind and altitude.

On Tuesday it was windy and I had 5 drives over 300 yards with a helping wind.  Of coarse 1 of them was on the fairway of the next hole over,  but still only 95 yards to the pin, lol.

My driver swing speed is usually 102 to 107 mph.  Heck my brother is 54, his is 115 mph and he shoots in the 90s.  Can't hit his irons to save his life but I have seen him hit his 3 hybrid 250 off the fairway.  I on the other hand hit my irons really well, but not too far, only carry 160 with my 7 iron.

A lot of real high handicap players I get paired up with, will hit 2 out of 10 past 250 yards cause they swing as hard as they possibly can every swing.

Why do you care if i care so much? It's my problem not yours?

I'm with @billchao, what does it really matter.  In the end, the score matters, not the driver distance.  I'm realistic, I carry my driver 230 or 240, and I'm an old fat guy.  But I'm also a single-digit handicap.  If it insults your ego that someone is claiming to hit it far, you might just need an ego-adjustment.  Personally, I enjoy competing fora  dollar or two against guys who claim to drive it 280.

I hit, on average, between 185-200.  I am happy for that at my age, physical limitations, and an upper 80s speed.  What I think about others' braggadocio drives mean nothing to me.  That is how we all should think. I want nothing or no one to plays game it my head. And, that includes the voices in my head!

Sounds like two guys arguing over who hits the longest drives.😉

"... over who has the longest driver" FIFY. These types of debates usually just take me laugh.  😎 They also do nothing to help improve or gold game here!

Exactly. I can outdrive Dave, but he beats me even on his bad days. Driving distance is only one aspect of the game.
