People make it on the PGA tour because of their physical skills, not because of their mental skills.

Yes, but when they are faced with equals the one with better mental skill prevails. That´s the meaning of competitive golf, players with similar physical skills playing under presure. It apply on every sport at eny level.

One of tiger best skills besides his irons was his mental skills, he was really strong to beat in his head.

Just one case from a great female player of Argentina. Between 10 and 18 years old she won everything inside her age by far and a little more tigth against Argentina´s best players, all ages, between 16 and 20 years old. She finaly decided to go and play in the USA, she was so good that she was invited to play in the US Women OPEN in her early twenties. What happened to her? she turned pro an start losing and she simply just could´t handle it. Just could´t handled the pressure and after a year she quit golf for good and turned into faith. No more golf, just God.
An incredible gifted player.. but with poor mind skills.

This isn't the topic to discuss the mental game, but I disagree with just about everything you just said.

There are multiple topics about the physical vs mental game already, (Including the Overrated/Underrated thread there the current topic is the mental game)

Or the mental game thread

I'd gladly continue this convo with you in one of those threads if you wish.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

I've always like Lee Trevino's quote

“You don’t know what pressure is until you play for five bucks with only two bucks in your pocket"

There should also be a quote about the walk of shame one makes on their way to an ATM after a round.

Lee had a great mindset. He has a ton of good quotes, but one that stuck was something to the effect of ''pros putting for pars are like dogs chasing cars..neither of them will last.''

There's a Bobby Jones quote which I can never remember the exact words but goes something I this, "one of the problems most golfers have is that having made a perfect stroke once that they believe they can do it again."

Not exactly favorites, but used often:

Better lucky than good.

I have 2 uncles who had a big influence on my taking up golf; both were club champions & they both hated that comment.

This was one of their responses when the better lucky than good comment would be dropped. The other was "You can't count on being lucky"

It took me a while to figure out what they were saying - but I'll still take a bit of luck when it comes around

Players play, tough players win!

Some of my favorite Ben Hogan quotes:

  • Golf and tournament golf are as different as baseball and hockey.
  • When I practiced, I practiced to get it right.
  • I don’t believe there is anything like a natural golf swing. A golf swing is an unnatural thing, and it has to be developed.
  • Golf is not a game of good shots. It's a game of bad shots.
  • Reverse every natural instinct and do the opposite of what you are inclined to do, and you will probably come very close to having a perfect golf swing.

Attributed to several folks including President Woodrow Wilson:

"Golf is a difficult game of trying to hit an elusive ball into an even more elusive hole with implements ill-designed for the purpose"

From Billy Graham:

"The only time God doesn't answer my prayers is when I'm on the golf course"

From the heavenly to the, er uh:

"Sex and golf are two things you don't have to be particularly good at to enjoy"- could be Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason, or Chi Chi-I can't remember

Can't remember who told me this but here it is.   Playing golf is like owning a cat, it'll only give you enough love to keep you coming back for more.

That's a good one. Way to take it a slightly different direction as well.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
    • Do you have examples of exceptional scores versus their established handicap indexes?
    • Day 539, April 23, 2024 Mirror work once again. When I get back to swings, I'll just do it A. LOT.
    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
