Am I the only one that could go a round of golf without being spoken to by your partners about your swing, golf course management or their own shortcomings. I honestly like solitude during a round.

I don't mind golf conversation as long as they aren't focused on what I'm doing wrong or how much better I'd be if I just did...

I prefer golf chatΒ to hearing the same old golf stories over and over that always start out with, "Hey did I ever tell you about...?"Β  Yes, you've told me countless times, it was interestingΒ orΒ funny the first five times.

Exactly.Β  I don't mind chit-chat during the round and don't mind talking about the game.Β  I'm pretty self-deprecating and don't mind joking about my bad shots, but I draw the line at somebody who wants to offer me "help" on the course.

Silence during a round of golf is just awkward. There's a social aspect to the game and if you're going to spend 4+ hours with someone, not talking is just weird.

One of the greatest parts of golf is the social time with friends and family. Β Human socialization often includes using your vocal chords to produce sounds we call words.

While the OP leaves OUT the non golf chit chat of general conversation from his list of thing he doesn't want to hear, the comment about solitude seems to make him sound like a bit of a debbie downer (no offense. of course). Why would you play a "social" game and not want to socially interact? Sure, I'm sure everyone wouldn't mind a nice quiet solo round on a great course, or even a not so great course once in awhile. But the odds are stacked against you playing solo all the time. Even the pros (well, most of them) have a conversation or two with guys they are playing against. While it certainly wouldn't be about each others swing, course management or their own shortcomings, they might talk about common interests, favorite restaurants or the nice babe with the big bazongas behind the 14th green. Even stories about Hogan being the cold steely silent competitor have been a bit exaggerated and enhanced over the years. If someone doesn't want to talk, then fine... but if the other guys wants to talk, we'll talk. But we know not to overdue it and chit chat all the time through backswings, putts, etc... unlike quite a few people I've played with.

I enjoy conversation ... when I am out with my buds, the banter never stops ... except when someone is hitting.

I'm ok with limited conversation ... my biggest pet peeve is guys that talk to you during your pre-shot routine

I like people and talking so I would find it weird to not talk with someone during a round.

If I spend four hours with somebody and don't talk to them, it could probably be assumed that I don't like them.Β  If I don't like them, what the heck am I doing voluntarily spending four hours with them in the first place?Β  Especially doing something that we both supposedly enjoy.Β  I'd find it incredibly awkward and strange to spend an entire round with no conversation, and I doubt I'd enjoy it much.

Same here.Β  99% of the time I'm golfing with friends, rarely ever golf with strangers - and the banter is pretty much nonstop amongst us (except, as you said, when somebody is hitting or getting ready to hit).Β  While the game itself is enjoyable, it's much more fun with people you enjoy spending time with.

As long as the banter doesn't: a) involve telling me how to play golf, b) interfere with pace of play, ...I say banter away! But if you want the hitter to wait till you're done with your inane story before he starts his pre-shot, or have everyone "hold on a minute" on the tee so you can tell us a joke, then I hate you and want you to go away. ;-)

Being one myself, I can say definitively, yes. ;-) But in all seriousness I have no idea how you reached that conclusion based on what I wrote.

Little bit of golf talk, non-intrusive comments about shots on hand and one that was just played, or what lies ahead, etc, ok. Keeps me in the moment. When with my buddies, talk a little bit about our families, trips, little bit of work when driving up to next shots.

What you doing wrong in the swing, 'you should try this', etc., not all that welcome unless you areΒ my instructor.

Having said that, I absolutely respect anybody who wants complete solitude. Even understand it and would not bother me a bit. It would take me aΒ hole orΒ so to figure that that's what you want.

Because one of the defining characteristics of introverts is that they don't talk a lot? Β I for one, wouldn't feel the least bit uncomfortable playing 18 holes and saying nothing apart from "you're away" or "nice shot", etc.
