Would You Rather #15...

Would you rather show up to the course looking and feeling terrible, and shoot the best round of your life, or look and feel your best, but shoot the worst score of your life?

I'll feel better after B, so, B.

Personally, I would rather shoot my best score and look/feel terrible. I’m sure there are some days where you show up to the course looking like a mess. Nobody makes note of it and just assume you’re having a bad day.

Easily, the former.  I won a GCAM tournament 3 days after getting diagnosed with the flu and bronchitis.  When I wasn't feeling well, I just swung loose and easily and had no expectations.

The next time we get a Would You Rather… question, let's make it one without a decidedly better answer, if we could please. 🙂

You mean like "Would you rather play golf, win $100 and shoot your best round ever OR stay home and repair the gutters in the cold and rain?"😊😊😊

I don't know any serious golfer who wouldn't pick shooting their best round from these choices but I could propose a twist: would you rather play the best round of your life or shoot your lowest score ever?  If you ask me about my best round the round that comes to mind was not my lowest score (albeit only a stroke higher).  I didn't enjoy my lowest score nearly as much as I really didn't feel like I was playing anywhere as near as good was the score.

Good idea. Apparently I’m not very good at making these up 😂.

I have done both. Feeling physically terrible is not an option for me. Best score doesnt matter.

If I am feeling poorly, chances are I will continue feeling poorly for a day, three longer. That best score was a fluke, followed up with poorer scores.

Give me that physically healthy, worst score everytime. Being healthy the next few days, probably means I will improve quite a bit on that worst score.

If I shot the worst round of my life (and I've had some awful rounds), I wouldn't be feeling very good for very long.

Tell you the truth. If this really were the worst round of my life, I'd probably quit well before 18 holes.

I'd rather not set a new worst score of my life, I will have to live with that forever (hopefully), but I have felt bad and looked bad and I know I can recover and I'd take shooting the best round of golf in my life - which would mean even par or better. Yeah me!

Yeah, I've done this! My buddy called me on the day after Christmas to see if I wanted to go play! I went out just to have fun, Shot a 4 over 76. My buddies congratulated me and bought me beers! I have no idea how it happened!

Would You Rather…? #16:

  • Hit the ball as solidly but, due to some luck or whatever, score relatively poorly for you.
  • Hit the ball poorly but, due to some luck or some holed chips or whatever, score really well.

I will choose number one, hitting the ball solidly. At least then I know I am moving in the right direction for future rounds of golf.  I'll accept a little good luck but I do not want to score well because I've been getting very lucky.  And if I'm allowed a preference for when good luck strikes, I'll take it on the 18th hole after pressing all bets.

I'll take the first option all day long.    I've done both but leave with a good feeling after hitting the ball solidly even though I didn't score well.

I’ve mentioned this in other topics in the past, but definitely #1 for me. I feel better at the end of the round hitting the ball well than I do if I had to grind through the round.

I would 100% rather strike the ball well and score worse than usual due to bad luck. At this point in the evolution of my golf game, I gain more confidence from good ball striking during a round than scoring.

I'd rather No. 1 90% of the time. I'm a lot more encouraged by swinging well than scoring well. The exception would be during league or if I have any kind of real money on the line, then it's just win with whatever game you have that day.

    • I see that guys like Rahm and Phil are suggesting they now play 72 holes. They appear to be conceding that their circus is viewed as less than a true competitive event. Rahm was a whiney bitch all weekend at Augusta. Regrets?
    • Yeah, in the lessons I have taken we have worked on swinging less steeply. I probably still swing too steep with woods.  Average yardages through my bag according to my Garmin watch (won't be 100% accurate due to sometimes the watch not picking up a shot, or me accidently clicking the wrong club): 60 - 100 yds 56 - 106 yds 52 - 125 yds PW - 149 yds (this one seems off to me) 9i - 149 yds 8i - 157 yds 7i - 167 yds 6i - 178 yds 5i - 190 yds 4i - 202 yds   And longer than that is where I get into trouble: 2i - 208 yds (small sample size on this one, still mostly just practicing with it one the range as the slice % is too high for my liking) 4 wood - 202 yds (haven't used it much last season due to not liking it) Driver - 241 yds   My driver has a huge variance as well. So for example on Sunday (the first round of the year) I hit it 5 times. 2 were big slices (186, and 179 well off to the right). 2 were my hands getting too closed and hitting a much too low draw/hook (239 and 225 on the left rough), and one came out low like the draw, but actually had a fade on it (210, just off the right side of the fairway. Looking back at some past rounds, the good drives (maybe 10% of shots) tend to be between 250 and 280. So when it is outside of 200 yds is where I really get into a lot of trouble. I will often play irons off the tee, or on a par 5 lay up to gap wedge range to try and give myself a comfortable shot in.
    • And yet on they have no problem calling every wooden club a persimmon even though they’re not all made of persimmon. As @iacas said, it’s just what the clubs are called.
    • Hybrids you're supposed to play much like your long irons. I don't really like them anymore because I have a tendency to hook them. I'm probably going to replace my 2h with a 5w soon. Fairway woods are meant to be hit off the ground with a shallower angle. You don't want to take too steep of a swing that you're taking much of a divot. If you have difficulty with the length you can try to choke down on the grip a little. I honestly don't think, based on what you're written so far, that a 3i is really the answer. Maybe learning how to hit the fairway woods better so you can play your 4w or even get a 5w might be the play. What are your yardages through the bag? Do you even need another club just because you can fit one in?
    • And by 'growing the game' they mean growing their bank account.  It's just a weak and stupid rationale.
