It is the brown tree snake, same one that invaded Guam. In Guam, they were dropping poisoned dead mice via parachute to kill them. I think they come in shipping and weren't brought their by people per se.

I live at the end of a subdivision where most of the lots are not developed.  We then also back up to a huge farm field.  I will never have neighbors behind me due to the geography.  However, that farm field behind us seems to have an abundance of snakes.  So, we have one or two in the yard all of the time.  In fact, I name them.  I let them go since they eat mice and don't pose a threat to us.  Well, other than the time I was mowing and looked up at the limb of a tree I have to duck under and saw one sitting there.  LOL  Snakes can be very beneficial!

I will give really poisonous ones a great deal of respect

I'd suggest not eating it, but honestly I don't know of any snakes that are poisonous ;-)

What are these "snakes" you speak of?:-P

(Feeling smug as I live in one of the two countries in the world (excluding Antarctica) that have none.)

Considering your avatar I would ask you the following question. Ever been chomped by a queen snake?

New Zealand has none? I remember hearing that Australia has tons. Bizarre that New Zealand wouldn't have any.

Australia and New Zealand are a long way from each other. I also had heard that Ireland had no snakes.

I really don't understand the hatred for snakes. They fascinated me, and as a kid, I'd used to go out and catch garter snakes and bring them home. Which freaked out my poor Mother to no end!

As I'm hanging Christmas lights yesterday, I find this in a tree. IMG_4833.JPG

I just googled snakes in Florida - quite a variety of venomous and non-venemous. Then there was an article on the Green anaconda that has been found in the everglades - largest snake in the world!! And the Burmese pythons that have been found in numbers. Crazy.

Pythons are invasive and are taking over too.  I went to Shark Tower in the everglades and the dude was telling us about how they are always actively hunting pythons to stop their spread.  It's interesting.

I lived on Vancouver Island (Victoria) in Canada for 3 years, no snakes on the island.

That's because the cougars ate all the snakes. Now the cougars just go after humans.

Is it me, or are humans constantly bringing in invasive species - whether intentionally or not - and then trying in vain to eradicate them?

Since nobody seemed to get my joke, this is what I was referring to.

And yes there are venomous snakes in NJ, but no poisonous ones that I know of.

Snakes rock!  Had many as pets when I was younger.  Had to get rid of the last one as kids were on the way and snakes/kids not a good combo.  Use to have a scorpion and a few piranha as well.

After all those a dog or cat seems too tame/civil/mellow to me.

Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff.
