Tiger's 2017 Season

  1. 1. How will Tiger fare this season (assuming he remains healthy)?

    • Awful. He will miss a lot of cuts. He might not even make it through the whole season.
      23
    • Not great. He'll make a few cuts but nothing more.
      9
    • So-so. He might see the weekend more often than not, but nothing better than perhaps a couple of Top 20s.
      11
    • Not Bad. He makes many cuts, and even contends a little early on in the week but usually fades. No wins, but maybe a couple of Top 10s.
      21
    • Good. He shows flashes of his former self on the weekend often, and he contends several times. Maybe even a couple of Top 5 finishes.
      23
    • Really good. He plays well often, and he breaks through with many top finishes and even a win.
      15
    • Great. He contends more often than not, gets at least a win, and even contends at the majors.
      4
    • Superb. He makes a return to the old Tiger. Wins multiple times, one of them even being a major.

Honestly, why not?  He's not gonna play, we all get that, why drag it out?

Hubris.

I know, I know......

I guess there is no reason for anyone to withdraw before pairings are announced. It isn't like there is an alternate waiting to fill a spot if someone can't make it. And I'm sure they already know in Augusta where I'd think they have some detail discussions about pairings.

Players play, tough players win!

Anyone else feeling like Tiger is starting to turn a corner and be "bad" for the game of golf?

I know it's a stretch. But I'm sure there's a bunch of us out here, especially those of us only having been playing a few years, that are getting kinda of disappointed when we're expecting him to come back and see some cool action (whether it be the old Tiger or a new Tiger) because we didn't really see Tiger during his glory years. But now, he's letting us down over and over again. I'm feeling like he's stringing us along for way too long. That may not be a function of Tiger personally, at all, and instead maybe it's all the media's fault.

I don't let my current opinion discredit his achievements. I still like Tiger a lot. Always will. I just feel like now it's getting disappointing. I think I'm finally in the boat where I want Tiger to retire and focus on the First Tee and other good golf programs.

I was privileged to watch Tiger when he came out on tour.  Now he's dealing with the challenges of age and wear and tear.  ALL of us will get there sooner or later whether you are injury free all your life or have gone under the knife like Tiger and myself.  Surgery  leaves you different.  It never goes back to original.  From the comments he's made he's not going to endanger what remains of his quality of life to play a game at professional level.  I've had back surgery twice and I have strict limitations on what I can and cannot do.  Keep this in mind when considering what Tiger is going through.  Put yourself in his place.  What he does is really none of our business since it doesn't affect us at all.

Nobody is more disappointed than Tiger.

Tiger still moves the needle more than any other player so anything he does is going to be news. If he didn't move the needle they wouldn't cover him as much.

Seems like people will be disappointed by Tiger no matter what he does. Whether he talks about how he's hopeful to play or whether he keeps quiet and withdraws the week before.

Quote

"He was grinding pretty hard on this one,'' Steinberg told ESPN. "Because the Masters has such a special place in his heart, and because it's been such a special tournament for him, he really wanted to try and be there. And knowing the course so well, the local knowledge, he figured he had a chance to play. He grinded on this up until today.''

This Steinberg bloke is bloody irritating. Also, I'd have thought a University of Illinois J.D. might have a vague notion of the past participle of the verb to grind

I've been saying for a quite sometime that Tiger is done.  He just doesn't know or want to admit it to himself.

I would love for him to prove me wrong, but I just can't see it.

More hope, for those who are expecting Tiger to play more PGA Tour events

I don't call one in the water and one stiffed - two easy wedge swings - to be "hope." If anything it's almost a bad sign.

Just heard Tiger had successful back surgery, again.  Hope us gets well, still don't like his clandestine approach to how he addresses his injuries with his fans until after the fact.

John

Edit:  Tiger needs to be in the NHL where injuries are described as upper body injury and nothing more... lol.

Depends on what they mean by "successful."  Alleviating pain? I can believe that. Returning him to a condition that will allow him to play on the Tour, with a swing that will make him competitive at the level he might want? It may be too soon to know that.

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
